Big Sky Football Fall Season Cancelled

Bummer.

I wish these decision makers didn’t bow to pressure from squeaky wheels that always want to be far too overly cautious.

Some people can’t see the forrest for the trees. Nobody wants to get covid19. But nobody wants to lose a roof over their head or starve either. If these multi-million dollar businesses don’t get back up and running, the people that depend upon them doing business for their livelihood will suddenly find themselves unable to make ends meet — if they haven’t already.

We can’t sit and hide in a cave wearing masks forever hoping to wait this out. Time to get busy living. Take all the precautions you can, but live with the consequences.

Sure, collegiate student-athletes aren’t the same as pros. But a small percentage need to play in order to get a shot at a pro career. And then there are many people around the athletic teams that make a living supporting them. Trainers, security, ticket takers, administrative, media, officials, etc, etc.

We’re gonna see the bigger name programs play. Because of the money and livelihoods at stake. I wish everyone else could see it and do it the same.

My apology to those that are hyper-sensitive and overly protective. But I’m over this $#it. We shut everything down for nearly 6 months and it didn’t make the virus go away. Athletes were still getting infected during the shutdown just like everyone else. Starting back up while being as cautious and preventative as possible isn’t going to suddenly tip the scales.

People need to get back to working again. To make money and support themselves and their families. And for their own sanity!

If kids don’t go back to school, that’s hard to do. Is the State gonna pay for everyone’s day care? If businesses shut down again and stay shut down, we’re soon gonna have worse problems than covid19. I’m pretty sure someone can starve to death in less time than the virus will get them. And we don’t want to see our homeless numbers skyrocket because people can’t pay their mortgage/rent.

Bill collectors aren’t going to defer much longer and the gov’t has taken away the weekly unemployment stimulus and won’t replace it anywhere close what it was.

It’s time to get moving again, people. Get back on the ferris wheel. Revolutions.

I hear everything you’re saying, but the fact that the hospital where my wife works is full and has zero beds available seems to go against your wishes. Maybe it’ll take one of your loved ones getting sick and needing respiratory treatment to realize the hyper-sensitive, overly protective people see that hospitals can’t handle massive amounts of patients all at once.

it's disturbing how much academia bows to their internal 'single mindset' cult and culture with one goal in mind.....we will look back one day in shame that we allowed them to drive the agenda. Not enough people in those broken institutions actually care more about kids than they do towing the line with their colleagues and their fear of the mob.

Sounded like a storm, with a lot of rumblings of Thunder.
You are just going to have to join the rest of us, and work it thru. It's like I tell my kids. Life is not always fair, and it doesn't always make sense.

My suggestion would be to do all you can, to help in anyway you can. Wear a mask, even if you think it goes against your right to be selfish.
It will all come back. Have a little faith in the spirit of America.

Winston Churchill once said.
" You can always count on America to do the right thing, After they have exhausted every
other possibility."

Here's wishing you great football

Exactly how I feel!

Nothing is overwhelmed, our great nation has vast resources. The Kings Arena only saw 8 patients as overflow. We are prepared.

IDK what makes you believe I don’t know someone that has dealt with covid. I also know people, family members, that are struggling financially. They’ve lost or are losing their own business. Stressing out and depressed because they aren’t working. Because they can’t afford daycare for their children who aren’t going back to school.

As I said before, having a roof over head and being able to put food on the table trumps trying to avoid a virus you may not get and may not suffer major complications from even if you do contract it.

You’re worried about people filling up hospitals. I’m worried about people potentially becoming homeless and struggling to take care of themselves and their families. And the additional crime that will come from it all.

It’s a very fundamental thing to me. Someone’s right to work and provide for their families is of greater importance than others feeling safer about a virus. They are both super important things, no doubt, but one should clearly take precedent over the other.

We in america may be better off than other countries around the world with regard to starvation, but make no mistake — there are already predictions of mass starvation because third world countries aren’t getting the donations and supplies they normally get due to all the shutting down. And it only grows worse the longer things remain shut down. And it’s effecting the US too.

Water needs to flow or it becomes stagnant. Our economy is becoming stagnant and a lot of people are going to suffer from it. More than have suffered from the virus thus far.

We need to get things flowing again and keep it that way. With as many safeguards as necessary. But revolutions need to start happening and soon.

Clearly disappointed, but, like you, also surprised.

This thread has transitioned away from the Big Sky and more about COVID. So I’m going to leave it open if people want to talk about the Big Sky. If not, I will lock this thread.

Terrible decision to cancel the Big Sky. The Big Sky needs to compete this year. The impact is far beyond the field of play. Could list a litany of reasons (many statistical), along with the many pros noted above.

Right now the Big Sky can't meet the NCAA testing requirements. The tests are both too expensive and not readily available. Programs in the Power 5 have more money so that isn't stopping them.

Let's hope everything improves so the FCS can play this spring!

Well, to be fair, the thread was about the Big Sky cancelling because of covid. So not totally off topic, right? ;)

No worries. I’ll take the hint and keep my comments going forward about football only.

Not enough people in those broken institutions actually care more about kids than they do towing the line with their colleagues and their fear of the mob.

I was watching a program on Mao's re-education program....it reminded me of our academic crowd. Recently listened to a dean at one such institution indoctrinate the incoming student body of the need to identify what pronoun they associate themselves with...he, she or it. Literally spent 30 minutes on the subject with all the incoming parents taking it all in. He, she or it.

Is locking the thread the same as deleting it? Seems the policy stated: " As news warrants it, updates on policy will be allowed, but anything beyond that will be removed."

I don't like the delete a whole thread that has some news at the origin (Big Sky moving football). By locking them, it hopefully stops something that has gone off topic.

I've got a buddy who coaches in this conference, and he said the cost of testing is the "straw that broke the camel's (conference's) back".

There are a number of institutions in the Big Sky that actually pushed for a full cancellation of the season (not just a push back to spring). Financially speaking, with the "body bag"..err..."pay day" games cancelled, many FCS schools are better off financially by not playing the season at all. And don't forget, its not just about football. Those same massive testing costs then trickle down to smaller sports volleyball, soccer, cross country, etc. cancellation of March Madness hit colleges hard. Lost revenue for the Big Sky schools from that cancelled event was worth about $1M per school.

Finally, who are we kidding thinking entire teams won't spread this virus. Its a huge issue right now for athletics. Try asking a bunch of 19-22 year old to not mingle with friends and members of the opposite sex all year! I think we are going to see some major issues as college dorms begin to open. When a few team members test positive, the trickle down would be massive.

It truly sucks, and I am on your side about opening up the economy. But college athletics is something different. They cant move forward in a 'business as usual' fashion, and the necessary prevention needed is simply too expensive (and in the end, not likely to really work anyway). The Power 5 will cancel soon. And if they cant cut it, how the heck can the Big Sky do so?

Speaking of the Big Sky and all other FCS conferences. With the exception of maybe Montana, NDSU and James Madison I would venture to guess that at least 95% of FCS football programs lose money, so shutting things down is negligible from a financial standpoint.

There is so much wrong with what you've said here but since it has absolutely nothing to do with football, I won't comment further. I will say though that these schools, coaches, players want to play. Implying that it's some "PC" push from academia to ruin sports/football is ridiculous.
