Can a team opt to stay in their own division? Instead of going to Open? Or does CIF dictate where you go?

It depends on a lot of factors, but if you qualify under the Open guidelines, then you can't opt out. You can still opt in if you don't qualify, but you don't have to a la MV 2 years ago. But they can only take 8 teams so depending on how many candidates there are, one could qualify or opt in and still not get in.

Here is what CIF says as far as qualification rules for the Open Division:

**A school qualifies for the second straight year after competing in the state or regional final the previous year.
***A school competes in its section open division semi-final.
****A school was ranked in the Top Ten of Cal Hi Basketball, Cal Preps and/or MaxPreps Rankings (early March) the past two years (current year and or previous year).
*****A school qualifying for their regional playoffs may request to be placed in the open division. Evaluation Tool:
A schools strength of schedule will be used to evaluate the strength of the program. (i.e., regional or national type of schedule). Entry Cap: No more than four teams may be selected for the Open Division (North Only). o Sections may choose to replace selected teams in the division from which they were selected (North)
