just had to stop in at BJ's for a couple of drown my sorrows Margaritas and a pazookie... ;-)
some thoughts on the game..
I thought BC's big 3 played very well.....McDonald led all scorers with 24...Gabriel was a rock inside, battling CN's bigs for Off rebounds keeping BC possessions alive, and blocking a bunch of shots. Vaughn did a good job defensively and got a couple big off rebounds and putbacks......the other 3 which are often maligned on this message board I though also held their own and did a good job. Jhane Lewis had a couple of big off rebounds and putbacks including an and1.
CN was led by their sharpshooting freshman Maiya Flores who banged 6 3's and finished with 20 pts. Another freshman Jazzy Henderson was given the inenviable job of guarding McDonald in the 2nd half (after she went for 15 in the 1st)....She slowed her down and held her to 9 pts in the 2nd half (all on FT), not bad for a frosh I thought.
The 2nd half started with BC pushing the lead to 6 midway thru the 3rd....with CN closing it to 1 by the end of the 3rd.
Cn actually came out in the 4th and got the lead, extending it to 5 (with the ball) with about 4 mins left.....BC mounted a comeback and had the lead 48-47 with 53 secs left. CN had the ball and senior guard Kylie Kiech got fouled....shooting 2. ....she went to the line and missed BOTH. BC rebound went down and missed their shot...CN took the ball up the floor, soph Hailey vice neat passed up an open 3 from her preferred spot in the far corner...instead, opting to throw a cross court pass to the opposite wing and of course McDonald popped the lane for the steal and got fouled at the other end of the court. She hit her FT 50-47...CN missed their shot...BC girl got fouled, shooting 2 and she hit both 52-47...CN hit a 3...52-50.....CN fouled Gabriel and she calmly went to line and hit both FT...54-50......and that's how the game ended.
The KEY STAT of the game to me was the Free throws.....At Cardinal Newman.....Brookside shot 27 freethrows...CN shot 5....almost impossible to win a game with that kind of discrepancy.
Good win for Brookside Christian.......congrats to Pico and his crew
