Cardinal Newman wins DIV

Well, maybe not amazing, but very good, especially for the Redwood Empire which does not have a ton of girls' state hoops crowns.

I think we played the Joy Durand teams when I was coaching at Campo. They were very good, but I always thought Mark hurt his teams by yelling at them too much. But then again, I didn't see him in practice, which is where coaching is really done ...

They kept saying it was Newman's first title but I played against Joy since CYO days and Ursuline won in 1992. Same school just went all boys after Ursuline collapsed. In the late 1980's and early 90's there were some great hoops in the Redwood Empire between Ursuline and Healdsburg. Mark was intense on the sidelines but he was a very good coach. Happy for my alma mater. Its gotta kill Bonfigli who has 730 or so career wins but no state titles.

Harry Tappin had some really good teams at Healdsburg, I remember -- and Cloverdale was pretty good this year.

Harry T. did have some outstanding outfits. His daughter was a terrific player. The Hounds were a real problem for foes a generation ago.

The next time Bonfili has a good team he just needs to hope the two teams that can beat him get called up to open like Salesian and Brookside did this year. Unfortunately, CN will likely have to face the same fate both. BC and Salesian did this year.

The last time Bonfigli and the CN boys made it to the state final Salesian DID get pulled up to the Open . In case you forgot Salesian boys beat the CN boys by 30 in the section final. They then got pulled up to the Open and lost in the 1st round.
And in case you forgot again... the Salesian girls made it to the state finals twice in D4 after SMB had beat them in the NCS D4 final(both yrs) and SMB was pulled up to the Open (the 1st 2 yrs of the open). And don't forget that BC made it to the D4 state final last year after Salesian and Smb were both called up to the Open.
Also, I didn't hear you mention anything after SHC and MM got pulled up when Odowd won D3 last year.
Or after Mcclatchy won the D1 state title when SMS got pulled up last year.
Or how about Pinewood getting pulled up this year and ESP winning D5???..
AND finally what about your Mitty girls last year??? SI was called up to the Open out of D2...you didn't mention that, and you certainly didn't downplay Mitty's state title because of it.
Do I need to keep giving examples? I have a bunch more....
The point being that whomever gets chosen for the open in BOTH the boys and girls has a huge trickle down effect on EVERY division.

All great points. cant disagree with any of it. Based on CN's youth next year would probably have been their year to take down Salesian and win d4 state and that would have been even more satisfying but likely the next few years could be open division for them.

As far as Mitty I have mentioned that this team is better than the state championship team of last year but outside of this experts and this board no one will ever know. While the 2015 championship can be slightly tainted because of teams being pulled up we likely would have won this year.

The theme of the open is you better take advantage of it when you have the shot ala Mitty in 15 and CN in 16. CN looks like a definite open threat next season.

Pinewood took advantage of it and took that opportunity to knock off the #1 team in the nation. Most thought having to play SMS was an exercise in futility but that is what makes the Open division special. The best play the best, and sometimes upsets happen.

Agreed. Somewhere along the line, even with the Open Division stripping out strong competition, most teams have to face someone quite daunting. Kudos to CN, or Ursuline, no matter the circumstances. They played and beat the teams in front of them.

Yeah here is a school and team that doesn't back down from anybody. Newman's scheduling has been impressive under Mertle. The wow factor sort of goes away after you see teams like Clovis West, Sacred Heart, St Mary's , Eastside College Prep, Inderkum, Sac High, etc.
