The rumor mill says an announcement will come within the next couple days.

For what it's worth -- and given my track record of predictions, that would be "not much" -- I'll go with Doug Vanderhorst (Amador Valley, Dougherty Valley) as the new person in charge.

no cal stars inside scoop? I thought for sure it would be damian young or bernard barnes... or possibly even eric bamberger for one year

The overlap between summer basketball and high school isn't really that great. They are really different styles of coaching, and not many are top-shelf at both.

It's probably not true for everyone, but definitely was/is for me. I feel I'm much more effective in a high school setting.

I know he's had a lot of success at AV and DV, but he had a lot of success early. It would be hard for me to believe that a coach that's went 70-97 last 6 years would get that job...

Again, coaching at a high level isn't always X's and O's. You have the players, you can win. You don't, and you don't win. Same thing can be said with AAU and High School.

Cal Stars is Cal Stars because they attract the best of the best. Sure Kelly is a good coach (I'm suspect about the other coaches on staff) but a lot of coaches could have coached the team Sabrina was on a few years ago and had the same success.

Same thing for High School. Do you really think that the reason Mitty, Pinewood (those two have both good players and GREAT coaches), SMS, Salesian, BOD, and SJND is because they have great coaches? They have great players! Any coach who's mid level could get very similar results at a lot of these schools.

Coaching is Coaching and if you're a good coach you're a good coach. I don't agree that one style fits better with one platform (HS/AAU).

Doug is a good, veteran coach. I would say he's done as well as anyone could with the talent he's had at AV and DV in any given season.

But C-let is not just about coaching, it's about attracting and holding premium players. Not sure Doug can or will do what that requires. I do know that over the last few years several high value players either left DV after a year, or chose to go to another school when DV was their residence school. Probably more a reflection on the overall talent at DV than Doug as a coach, but it's not evidence in his favor.

Look everyone know it’s all rigged from calstars coaching staff to miramonte high school coaching staff. From a simple accolade to a simple playoff seed.

we do love a good conspiracy theory here... do explain

Pinewood and Mitty are only good because they have great players? All of those schools you mentioned have programs that attract players and families. The coaches, regardless of what order you rank them put in A LOT of work. As a result, their programs benefit greatly.

Instead of minimizing the coaching at a BOD, SMS etc. you should champion their success because those coaches have a huge impact on that success. The girls basketball landscape needs more of those coaches that put in the time and effort than those who come and go in a blink of an eye. Sure any decent coach could have coached Mitty's team last year and had relative success but could they have gotten that team to that level?

Look at Cardinal Newman and Salesian. Both were average at best prior to arrival of their respective coaches. Now they are dominant programs and mentioned year in an year out with the elite of the elite. Sure any average coach could have the Salesian post and have success or the Cardinal Newman guard and have success but what did it take to get to that level. You are completely minimizing those coaches building the program that attracts those types of players and then getting those players to perform.

I was talking about the overlap in coaching from AAU and HS basketball and making the point that success isn't ONLY X's and O's but players really make each program. Since Mission of Fremont is mentioned on here, when was the last time they won a section or state championship? I can't remember in recent memory, yet we don't really hear about the wonderful job that Doug does, year in year out. Here we focus on wins and ultimately, that's where it counts.

All I was saying is that good coaches can coach AAU and/or HS and some coaches do a better job at managing both. There are some that suck at high school and do a great job at AAU and vice-versa. I think Sue and Doc are amazing high school coaches and do a great job with their AAU teams. I said that.

To be blunt, there are more than a few solid high school coaches who want to have a life so extending organized basketball well into the summer via AAU is not on their agenda. They see themselves as teacher/coaches of actual teams. AAU is about individual players seeking the attention of college scouts. Scholarships (money) loom large. Wins and losses by AAU teams are barely relevant in the big picture if you ask the kids and their parents who are spending fairly hefty dollars for the exposure.

You have to enjoy coaching to do it at any level, and I really don't enjoy spending every spring weekend in faraway gyms and going back to a hotel room at night. I also don't enjoy having limited practice time.

And I feel I'm a better practice coach than a game coach, and better at setting up and preparing a team than I am at drawing up plays on the fly.

Not that the AAU scene misses me, or coaches like me that much, but there is a significant difference -- as summer coaches who can't stand dealing with the administrivia of high school will attest.

AAU/TRAVEL BALL also gives those parents who think they can do a better job at coaching their kids than their HS coach a chance to put their$ where their mouths are.....lol

Nothing I've heard ... the rumor mill, not surprisingly, wasn't as accurate as we'd hoped. But who knows?

The word is they're very close, though.
