We are almost in February. As of today, these schools appear to be likely (or very likely) CCS Open Division participants, in no particular order:

Pinewood
Eastside Prep
Menlo School
Woodside Priory
Mitty
St. Ignatius
Sacred Heart Cathedral
St. Francis
Presentation
Menlo-Atherton
Santa Clara
Cupertino
Palo Alto

Notes: Oceana and South San Francisco might also be considered if one of them gets on a roll and beats M-A in the PAL tourney and wins it. Eight teams will be chosen to fill out a complete Open bracket. There doesn't seem to be an Open-caliber team in Monterey County or Santa Cruz County this season.

I think it will be the first seven listed by Jaymel, but Valley Christian will go Open instead of Presentation (who will not win a WCAL game this year, sorry Wade.)

Santa Clara at 16-0?
P2P has them at #6 in their current CCS rankings. While Presentation is #12 and Woodside #11.
Whats your reasoning on keeping SC out?
Just based on SOS?

Strength of schedule is a problem for SC. But may not be insurmountable in the end.

Valley Christian/Prez winner goes, agree with that. SC SOS is hovering around zero. If they go, they lose two

Pres is 0-3 so far, so I dont see how you can predict them over Valley (2-1).. That forth wcal spot will most likely come down to SI and SF.

MA should still get in based off their preseason right? If the sisters are gone like the other post suggests, would that diminish most hope of winning a game in the open? Will they still finish league undefeated, like was predicted? Interesting situation for them

If there was any confusion before, it has been settled now that the Kailahi sisters have transferred from Menlo-Atherton.

From Palo Alto Online (http://www.paloaltoonline.com/news/...arks-a-rally-leads-palo-alto-to-hoops-victory)

Menlo-Atherton athletic director Steven Kryger confirmed Tuesday evening that sisters Stella and Mele Kailahi are no longer members of the M-A girls basketball team.

The Kailahi sisters had played key roles on a highly-regarded team that has gone on a 16-game winning streak after losing its season opener to St. Mary’s of Stockton.

It is not clear at this time. But their departure alters the NorCal Division I calculations come tourney time.

Palo Alto was on the original list, but are they being over looked a little?? 2 of their 3 losses are to SMS and Pinewood. I'm sure they dont have a great SOS (like santa clara), but they play in a higher league division I believe. Anyone seen them play? Do they pass the eye test? Obviously I dont see them making too much noise in the open regardless, but the spots have to be filled by someone.

Good (sarcastic) point re Santa Clara.
i wasnt trying to be sarcastic.. I didnt look at the numbers or much of their schedules.. I just assume both are lower than the others we think are in. Is Paly's SOS wayyy higher than SC's?

Palo Alto definitely has a much stronger SOS than Santa Clara. They lost a close one to Pinewood and was very competitive. Even w/o the Kailahi sisters, MA is still a very strong D-1 and can possibly get moved to Open due to their record.

Mitty, Pinewood, SHC, VC, ESCP, WP, PA, MA

bubble: St Francis, SI, Los Gatos, South City

M-A will be in the CCS Open bracket. It's their NorCal chances in Division I that took a huge hit when the sisters left.

Does the CCS allow companies like All Ball Scouts to broadcast the CCS playoffs?

The only problem with your 8... historically there have been the max of 4 wcal teams in the open. Do you think they will go away from this for the first time this year?

It is worth noting that CCS did away with the maximum of "4 per league" rule for this season. Logic was that they were not truly getting the Top 8 for Open, as often times, the WCAL Top 5 should be included. They can still only take a max of 3 from an enrollment division.

SO, through some discussion with those "in the know", I believe the Open looks like this as of right now:
Mitty
SHCP
SI
VC
Pres or St Francis (whoever finishes 5th)
Eastside Prep
Pinewood
MA

Next up might be Paly or Priory.

No way SC is in the Open. They are winning a "B" league and have no significant wins that warrant Open consideration.

I would be willing to bet that the 8 listed above WILL be the Open, barring some crazy final 2 weeks.

Great info JAF10.. didnt realize the rule change, but still plays into my point that they will take more WCAL teams vs less. SI is actually the team thats in 5th place right now, so I guess we would flip flop them and SF for now.

I think Paly has a good shot at making the OPEN with their resume. Undefeated in League and only 2 pt loss to Pinewood. St Marys and Castro Valley only other losses.

Pwood vs SCHP
....one more time?
