CIF Announcement for 2020/2021 Sports

Looks like we'll start in February or March and have a full season. Sections will be releasing the start dates hopefully today too.

Considering the current health situation- this was probably the best outcome for hoops. Keeping fingers crossed for all these HS athletes. Honestly, until there’s a vaccine or proven therapeutic, can’t see any HS athletic events save for golf and maybe a few other non contacts moving forward. This decision buys time and gives hope.

G-d only knows when basketball will start. Spring?

With Football ending in April, I would say that basketball would probably start before or after spring break depending on the section. Obviously contingent on the status of the virus and improvements when 2021 comes around.

Basketball SJS first game March 9
Southern section March 12
State finals June 18-19

Take this with a grain of salt too, as with everything COVID-19 closure/reopening related, it will be fluid. Nothing about this is set in stone, if this thing isn't under control at any level better than now, don't count on this schedule holding up still....

Exactly. This is a glimmer and I mean a glimmer of hope.... absolute best case. tomorrow could look a lot different.

Wow, that is a serious disparity between sections. NCS teams cannot begin practice until March 15, whereas SJS teams can PLAY their 1st game on March 9!! Practice starts for SJS teams on Feb. 22, 3 weeks earlier than NCS. CCS will announce their calendar probably Wednesday as they have an executive board meeting tomorrow.

North Coast Section released it's dates. Basketball starts March 15th. There are several kids that play both basketball and baseball/softball. They will have to pick. This is going to kill some small school programs this year...

You may see schools allow athletes to play 2 sports. I don't think there is a CIF rule against that. I know kids have played baseball and run track in the past.
If I had a young man who wanted to play both, I certainly would try and accommodate that possibility. Maybe would have to split practice time and get another coach to agree. But, these are circumstances that no one has experienced and may have to think out of the box.

I 100% agree with you. The problem is, at least typically in the NCS, basketball and baseball games fall on the same days quite often. Unless the schedulers consider it when doing league schedules it could still be an issue. Hopefully they take that into consideration.

The good news, though, is that this schedule may be for just one academic year. Maybe.

The schedule has a serious conflict with basketball live periods. While CIF will allow athletes to play club, what coach will allow players to miss practice and possibly games to travel to tournaments.

The shoe circuits hold live events on east coast in April requiring travel on Thurs or Friday for west coast teams.

Many NorCal schools end in May... not sure how that will impact June games.

If a Kid is a serious D-1 prospect then he has to play on the Shoe Circuit unless he has already secured his offers. Look at the ratio of College Coaches @Circuit Games vs HS Games. There's no comparison!

This will definitely hurt the smaller high school programs who have players that play on AAU travel teams. for the upper tier programs With respected coaches I am sure they will clearly have some stern are you in or out conversations with there players. I dont envision a scenario where we get to june and a major player is missing for a sectional or state final game.

I’m not convinced that the stern conversation will convince athletes to opt for HS over live period tournaments and shoe circuit games if they have to choose

If players opt to sit out and play AAU that is there choice understood but most high school coaches will coach up there team REGARDLESS of who is or is not there .Again I believe that this problem will mostly exist at the lower-tier high school programs I don't envision coaches like Kennedy, mellis,Ritchie, or knight, will be missing players come playoff time.

I still haven’t heard the rationale for starting games 1 month before school ends and then playing after school is out. The SJS has its first game on March 9th. Seems like a better plan.

Which is crazy because SJS usually is behind NCS due to the fact that NCS doesn't have dead period and SJS does. This year SJS isn't having a dead period, thank the lord. Never was a fan of dead period.

ALL IN ALL I'M HAPPY WITH THIS DECISION! We knew going in that things weren't going to be perfect going in but with this teams get a full season, (which was predicted not to happen) football and basketball are separate seasons like it should and nothing was cancelled. I rather have this and work out the details later then not have anything to focus on. Hopefully things clear up by this time.

I am hoping that schools allow this to happen, just this one year. I know my Knights have a guy on our basketball team who is a starter, but at the same time he is our No. 1 pitcher and has a chance to earn a Scholarship playing baseball. I feel like if there are games on the same day, you have to chose, but if the student-athlete is willing to play games with limited practice time, then that should be their choice.

Overall, I'm happy with this decision, because it still gives us a chance to save the basketball season. I read an article today that says they are already testing a vaccine on 100K people. My guess is by around Xmas time, we will have a vaccine, and by the time March comes around most people will have it and we can get back to our lives like normal.

Not a fair comparison. HS and college play at the same time during regular year. If he is a serious D1 prospect the college coaches will already know his credentials.
