the game is being televised on YSN365 tonight.

CN 17-4. 6-0
West County 17-3. 5-1

CN got them by 19 in 1st matchup at WC ...BUT it was only a 4pt game starting the 4th.

There is no Shaughnessy/NBL playoffs this season as its been Covid cancelled so this is the last time these 2 teams will play and the last potential shot that West County has at ending the CN NBL dominance after an off-season of LOTS of social media and word of mouth chatter coming out of the West County crew about how this was their year.

7:30 start..

Never heard of West County before this year but I LOVE the chatter. I have watched both teams play and I can confirm that the drought will continue in the NBL for teams looking to take out CN. There was definitely a window to make it happen this year but CN still plays incredibly hard, physical, and smart with great M2M principles. Solid team based on the talent

EL Molino closed the school down after last year and combined with Analy.

The New name (at least temporarily for now) is called West County High School.

There were a couple of players on El Molino that combined with a decent returning Analy squad have given them a pretty solid squad. The best team that they have had over there in quite awhile.

CN is a definite NCS open team and could be a sleep for Nor Cal open. A team to look out for come open seeding time.

Open 1-4 seems to be a different level. Maybe just have 4. MC beat CN and West County in Dec, but got crushed by Salesian. Don’t think MC could hang in open, so I doubt CN would either. MC losses to PW, SI, Monte Vista and Salesian. All but Salesian close at half then big separation in 2nd half.

Yeah CN has had open division teams and went to finals against Mitty before but those teams were truly stacked with college players at d1 and d2 level. Mertle is an awesome coach but I would say newman isn’t that level this year. Not far away but not open quality.
guru fair Statement?

Time to hook up with the WCAL. MC as well. Taking apart the publics night after night is about as productive as yanking wings off flies. Utterly pointless.
Indeed. Good for nobody and that has to be the end solution at some point. Been talking about it for years. Or some hybrid with Salesian, MC, Newman, carondelet, st marys… something!

A private super league in the bay area would probably be best for the sport. Have 2 divisions (north/south or east/west) and play your division twice and the other once. I would be the best league this side of DC without a doubt.

WCAL minus pres, BOD, C-Let, PW, Salesian, CN, Marin Catholic, Moreau Catholic, SMB/SJND, ect. Obviously traffic travel is the limiting factor, not a huge distance to travel but would still take forever. The attention that league would bring to our area that is already a hotbed right now, would do wonders for the sport.

Newman looked into joining the WCAL 4 or 5 years ago. Had the support of the Mitty and SHC coaches.

The problems were twofold:

1st... 2 separate sections. CCS and NCS

2nd ...Travel... 2hr road trips for road league games and potentially 3 (with traffic) to Presentation.

I think people forget just how far north the CN campus is...its a full hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Just in the past few years CN has had a 20 game road trip streak and a 12 game road trip streak. Its difficult to get teams to go to CN for games. My point being there are no easy solutions for the CN NBL dominance other than the local NBL teams just simply getting better.

I would love to see a league similar to the WCAL in the NCS made up of the the private school powers. Not only fun in basketball but fun in football and the other sports also.

CN is not an Open team this year.

They have a loss vs Marin Catholic and a beat down loss vs Valley Christian. It was such a complete and dominant victory by VC that I walked out thinking VC was a STATE Open team potentially.

They played SRV tough for 2.5 qtrs before the wheels came off and were beat soundly.

They played Mitty tough for a half before getting beat by 20+ also.

CN signature/best wins? Piedmont and Analy(2)...not exactly a resume builder worthy of the NCS Open

They just arent quite there this year. I would expect them to be a top seed in the NCS D2 and probably end up playing Acalanes in the section final. If CN wins the section final? CN being placed as a lower D1 team in Norcals. If they lose to Acalanes? A high seed in D2 norcals.

I have to agree with a previous post... there seems to be a clear level of separation between the top NCS teams and the rest of the section.
Id personally like to see a 4 team NCS Open with all the teams playing 2 games (3rd place game vs 1st rd losers) so there would he a clear pecking order 1-4 for Norcal seedings.

I thought Moreau MAYBE NCS open....nope.

so how does this translate to NCS open now with common opponents? As I said it should be a 4 team NCS open.

So here's a thought:

Identify the powers in each sport (call them Open level) in the NorCal region. There could be some criteria, such as three years of dominance in league play, or simply a request by an individual school.

Take those powers out of their leagues in that sport and that sport only.

Give them all an automatic berth in their section postseasons.

Have them play a single Open round-robin on Saturdays or holidays (and those games could be part of larger showcases or multi-game events).

The teams would fill the rest of their schedules as best they could, most likely with tournaments and ambitious non-Open teams.

It's not ideal, as it would be difficult for those teams to find weekday games in January and February, but they could also arrange "non-league" games against each other.

This is turning out to be a really good year for the CCS. Mitty, SI, Pinewood, VC, St. Francis at the top

Coaches don't decide league membership. EVER.
