CSU officials have announced that the 2020-21 first semester will be an online-only academic affair. So, if it's not safe for students on campus, that has to mean student-athletes aren't safe being together either. We can therefore envision a hopeful hoops scenario for the CSU schools (Division I and Division II) beginning in January. Maybe. The omens are not good, though. The Division II CSU-centric CCAA has suspended all fall sports, as of today. And, unfortunately, looking down the road, January is right in the heart of the next flu season.

By the way, if the CSU system feels it must take this dramatic action, why wouldn't the UC system do the same? What's the difference when you are talking about students, teachers, coaches, staff, etc.? Both outfits are taxpayer-supported entities. For that matter, what about the JC system?

maybe the demographic of students at the CSU level compared to the UC system

There is no rush. CSUs are just the first to announce . I’d be surprised if California HS, JC, and UC all don’t follow due too what colhenrylives mentioned: legal ramifications (and other factors, e.g., using empirical data). Companies are starting to announce to their employees that returning to the office is scheduled for January now—at best. CA is the 5th largest economy in the world. We simply can’t have what happened in NY happen here. Imagine if Google, Zoom, our farms, etc. all became ill.

With no clear understanding of behavior nor treatment as well as no vaccine should equal SYAH (Stay Your you know what at Home) until further notice.

Surprisingly, some California private colleges are already announcing that they will open in the fall.

Across the nation it’s a different story. Most colleges are planning to reopen. Here’s an article that is updated periodically for colleges across the US: https://www.chronicle.com/article/Here-s-a-List-of-Colleges-/248626

Why make this announcement in May? They can wait till July. What's the rush?

Probably so students can make an informed decision on whether to register for classes in the fall or take the semester off. Per my son, registration for the fall semester starts very soon and he's been waiting for this announcement. Im sure those of you with kids in HS and college, noticed that online learning is BS. It's basically busy work... they arent learning any thing especially if they're majoring in engineering or sciences.

This sounds like it will kill any chance of a high school football season I dont see them pushing football back into jan??

colleges want those deposits... they are in big trouble. Be a good year to do a gap year or JC.
I believe we will see a paradigm shift in learning Going forward. Colleges got way to expensive and lazy. Finally people are waking up saying 50k is not sustainable.

i think it’s a no go. All momentum pointing that way. It’s so far down the priority list too. Sad.

because kids and their parents need to know if they are moving in the dorms or staying home. kids have planned their lives to leave the nest and experience college. now at least they know it wont happen yet.

Exactly. My son will be taking the fall semester off. He said there is no teaching or learning what so ever during virtual schooling. Just a bunch of assignments and go figure it out. I rather not pay for that type of college education. Told him to just stay home and take some online GE courses at Skyline and transfer the units.

I would also expect there will be alot of kids transferring from private to public schools as some families due to this pandemic and loss of income just don't have the money to continue to pay private school tuition not much NCS or Cif will be able to do as the there will be many hardship cases to deal with.

agree. I think you will see more private schools close. 25% unemployment will impact all of us.
