For those of you who are interested in an early look at the stars of tomorrow, come by Tice Valley Gym in Walnut Creek this coming weekend (Feb 24-25). The top girls' American teams in the West Diablo, East Diablo, and Tri-Valley CYO leagues will be competing in Gold and Silver divisions.

This follows almost four months of interleague play resulting in the teams qualifying and being seeded. Fourth through eighth grade teams are included. First round games on Saturday start with the younger grades around 10:30 am and finish with the older grades tipping off before 5 pm. Championship games in both divisions start with the younger grades at noon on Sunday.

Teams come from all over Contra Costa County and the eastern part of Alameda County. In particular, the Gold division 7th and 8th grade teams are well worth seeing.

If you didn't swing by Tice Gym this last weekend, you missed some legit teams and players. Many highlights all grades. But 7th gold (St. Raymond d. St. Monica) and 8th gold (St. Joan of Arc d. St. John Vianney) were particularly impressive.

Interesting...... Any idea what school any of the standout players in the 7th and 8th grade might be planning on attending? Will Miramonte be adding enough to be a serious Open division threat the next few years? Or will decisions be made to attend any other schools in the area both private and public? Campolindo, Acalanes, Carondelet? If there is a desire to play at a high level and/ or in college the right support needs to be in place. And obviously the right decisions need to be carefully considered. The right fit can definitely better your chances of being a successful team and individual player.

I only have definite knowledge about the St. Joan 8G team. Half are heading to San Ramon Valley with (in my opinion) 3-4 going directly to varsity. The other half are split between Monte Vista and Dougherty Valley. The two big guards (twins?) for St. John Vianney 8G will make an immediate impact wherever they go, but not sure where. The St. Raymond 7G team has a lot of size and, I have heard, some are slated for Carondelet. No word of anyone heading to Miramonte, though the Santa Maria (Orinda) 5G team won gold division - Kelly is going to have to wait awhile for those girls. :)

I forgot to include the Danville, and San Ramon Valley schools. San Ramon high (SRV) has a pretty good team this year and have a big game on Wednesday at Carondelet. It should be a pretty good matchup as playoff games tend to be a bit different than many regular season games. And then some girls out in Antioch and Pittsburg may also decide to stay closer to home. Any of those school looking to possibly have a bright future in the next few seasons? Thanks for the feed back on a few who stood out.

have an acquaintance who coaches St. Monica 7th, and have seen them play. the SM program traditionally feeds Campo, and they have a big kid with guard skills who will certainly be varsity-ready as a freshman. I was struck by the volume of 3-point shots taken (hadn't watched CYO for 15 years).

The game is changing! If you do not adapt you will be left in the dust. Just my opinion. Some of these teams and girls can flat out shoot the rock. The 3 is also the ultimate equalizer when you may be playing a team with much more size. Watch pinewood play C-LET. That was a piece of art. If you can't shoot I would hope then the coach adjusts his scheme and system to fit what his girls do best. But for the record I absolutely love the 3. Let the hate on me commence.

Are you talking about the redhead on St. Monica 7G? She is very talented. Also a very good team overall. Could have gone either way against St. Raymond. The other top 4 7G teams were CCOP (Pleasanton) and St. Joan of Arc (San Ramon). There were 13 teams in the 7G interleague, and I saw them all (I'm the St. Joan 7G coach). A lot of good 7G teams and players out there. The silver division championship game between St. Perpetua (Lafayette) and Christ the King (Pleasant Hill) was also pretty impressive.

SRV has a pretty solid pipeline going all the way down to fourth grade. No as much for the other San Ramon and Danville high schools. On the other hand, my sense is that there is a lot less buzz about heading up to C-let to play basketball, and hanging onto just a few more good players could do wonders for all those programs.

Thanks for sharing your observation and view points. I wasn't able to get out to Tice Valley for the games. Who won.... and do you have the score of the Silver division 7th grade St. Perpetual vs Christ the King game?

St. Perpetua won. I think by around 5 points.
