Elias Obenyah (2026) Salesian College prep is the next up

I'm not one to say AAU is ruined, but this video shows the best thing going in prep basketball right now with the high level June HS tournaments. Which aren't AAU.
I was telling my son. You can really just train and condition. Just do the June events. Seem like overkill trying to do Aau. We had more coaches at our games in June anyway. Now if your school doesn't do the summer events , Yea do aau.

Aau is still necessary. Even at the hs events you rarely get 10 players on the court at the same time that are all D1 talents. High level AAU teams have D1 players coming off the bench.

I'm not sure how many people know this kids story. He's exactly what every coach wants in their program. Hard working, unselfish, versatile, and has a wonderful attitude. He's from Ukiah and lives down near Salesian to get the exposure and learn from the best. (Mellis). If you watched the Harvard Westlake game last year that put him on the map. He was clearly a D1 player at that point and the scouts/coaches took notice. Salesian is a nationally recognized name. He gets plenty of exposure.

As for AAU.... Its not ruined. Its generally garbage is what I said. These tournaments now like California Live are really what kids need. Play with their HS agains the best and coaches will see you.

Hats off to Elias. The best is yet to come.

I think for the top players, both stages are needed. I think the HS events show more how to work in a team atmosphere/scheme and AAU can better show a player's future ceiling. Again, these are pretty broad and there are cases where it doesn['t hold up, but genreally that is how I see it

I tend to agree with you; however, I think with AAU the program the kid plays in makes a big difference in how much a player benefits from the exposure. High school basketball reflects more of what college basketball is today - players play roles within defined systems. AAU / Shoe Circuit basketball is much more iso and 1 on 1 then you would see in any good high school program. Good high school teams play defenses to reduce the impact of all of the dribble 20 times without passing and selfish 1 on 1 play that one will regularily see in AAU. The June recruiting period is becoming much more important than some realize.

Good way to break it down. Going off your point, I would assume that if Riordan and Salesian (for example) play at a big June tournamnet, those coaches know the strengths and weaknesses better for their opponents than most opponents of a shoe circuit team

I think that would be true. High school coaches do a significant amount of scouting and film study; whereas, AAU coaches often appear not to eiither have the ability to scout (players are from all over the country and overseas) or do not have enough time to prepare for all of the players that they will play against in one weekend. In addition, high school coaches see the players, even if the players transfer, over a period of years. Finally, no matter how talented an individual player or players may be, in high school basketball, team play beats individual play most of the time. Salesian proved that fact last season.

nothing beats live bullets... you can pay all the skill trainers you want and do that on the weekends... but when the season starts if you havent used that training all summer... it wont work. aau is just a way for you to get run in. i was impressed yesterday with all the local high school kids playing at 24.
now, the real problem is the dads of kids who arent happy with their playng time so they start new teams.

What an awesome story! Elias is an impressive young man.
Interesting that the other top 2026 basketball player in NorCal, Andrew Hilman, also has an inspiring story. Andrew is from the country of Cameroon and came to the US for the first time attending Riordan as a freshman. He spoke very little English as French is his first language. Got homesick, but tackled the books, worked hard. Works on his game, plays for the Oakland Soldiers AAU team and is just a great student-athlete. This summer he's gathered offers from Cal, Washington and UCLA. Looking forward to seeing both Elias and Andrew take their games to the next level (along with their teams) this year.

In 4 years Hillman could very well be on the Cameroon National team consisting of Joel Embiid, Pascal Siakim and Yves Missi……I could easily see Hillman running the point for them in LA in 2028.

Obenyah has been outstanding since his freshman year. I don’t think he started, but was a key figure off the bench. In this day and age of transferring, he bought into the Salesian system and now he will be a D1 player no doubt about it in my mind! Interesting to see if he continues to grow…height wise!

Is this a new language?
as much as a hoop lover you are, and you dont know the sneakers all your favorite players rock????

Those are the 11s and probably the best sneaker of all time. From graduation outfits, to nights out on the town, to semi formal they work.

Sleek, the elephant print was unmatched and the blue and red color is easy to match with the outfit.

Another excellent sneaker and dear to my heart. As a kid i begged my dad for these for christmas for months. My dad didnt understand why they were blue and thought they were gang related and i was trying to gang bang. I told him we lived in a crip neighborhood so i was safe. LOLLLL... anyway my first pair of Js i got that Christmas. Thanks POPS!

These are popular because of the many colorways and the versatility. They look good with jeans, hoop shorts, casual pants or sweatpants.

I know Nike, etc, sneakers, no idea what the model names and numbers are.

I don't care what brand or model they wear, I care what they can do on the court.

Also, I never heard the term "dunks". Another word for sneakers??

"Dunk" is what you do with the ball if you can get up there.

It’s a basketball shoe that’s only been around since 1985
