game of the year candidate in socal

jazzpt55,

I saw Valarie ball in the WCJ two years ago when MiChael Wright was the team's super star player. Valarie Higgins stood out in that game as a freshman. I just love her comment on her wise decision to notice the play called had a lower percent chance than using her natural instincts to drive and score. Many young players would wrongfully die in the play feeling like they must take the play the coach drew up regardless to the defense presenting a better option. Coaching kids to think and depend on themselves and their team mates is a valuable character building lesson a young player can carry with them throughout their life after basketball.
But many times a coach's ego tends to discourage players from thinking for themselves and trusting their own judgement. I briefly touched on that in" Win Anyway".

That must have been a heck of a game ! I'm sure Valarie's parents, family and team is proud of her.

Paytc, I totally agree with your post! Point guards especially, because they are usually the ones who know more about what the defense is giving them because they see the whole floor, should be allowed to play off instinct, to make the big plays in games like this. Sometimes it will be a dribble drive layup, sometimes it will a dribble drive, draw the defense in to set up another player to score. A lot of players get caught up on the play the coach draws up on the board during the time out, so their instinct goes right out the door. A great point guard has to be able to create, not just for themselves, but for their teammates as well.
FYI, Chaminade (Valerie's mom, sometimes her brother) live streams all their games. Go to Ustream, create an account (doesn't cost), then look up Chaminade Basketball. Last night's game, along with every game this season, should be posted. For all you AAU fans, her mom also live streams most of the Team Taurasi games as well. I watched yesterday's game last night. It was a good one!

kkross22,

Your kind response is greatly appreciated ! I wrote "Win Anyway" with the intent of creating a reference book, and a place to put the coach and the players on the same page. To create mutual respect among coach and players. Not just this out dated one side only respect, my way or the highway dictator coach nonsense. Yes…. you want a chain of command, but most importantly you should empower the players since their the ones on the battle field.

In my opinion great coaches don't just shove their system down their players throats with no flexibility. On the contrary, great coaches may have a trusted system, but their main concern is to put the players in the best position to succeed, and get out of the way until their needed. As mentioned in my book "your coaching should have a positive effect long after the players leave your program."

I totally agree with your comment on the importance of trusting the floor leadership of a good point guard.
And I also appreciate the other information you presented. I will look into it.

Paytc, definitely going to read Win Away. As an ex-player, coach, basketball mom, and true lover of the game, I think continuing to gain knowledge, going to coaching seminars/ trainings, learning from others, looking at the game from different perspectives is a MUST! I will definitely let you know my thoughts upon completion. Thanks!!

KKross22 you are right but some coaches think they know it all and stop learn the game. I think once a coach stop learning the they are not a coach any more. Take a lot to bet a coach these days dealing with different type of player. Some coaches run the same offence each year but they don't have same type of players. Coaches need to know how improvise and change offence some what. Then a good coach knows how to find the button to make a player give to give the team all they need out of the person. Coaching is not all about X's and O's its dealing different personality of players and to mesh them together. This is calling jelling a team together. Once a team does that they have each other back and play as a team. There is a part of game that called in and outs of the game. This part of the game comes from a coach that played the game that knows what is going on the court that fans can see. So to me coaching is about learning new drills, players personality and new plays and jelling them all together to make a great team.

kkross22,

I would really appreciate that! A lot of work went into creating it. I would recommend getting both the print and audio which are slightly different. The timing of releasing it during December's holiday season made it a best seller. It's been selling on the underground like hot cakes, similar to Hip-Hop before they commercialized it. I hope you like it.

I feel so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful project. It is available as an e-book,print, or audio-book.
The Win Anyway DVD is in production. Thanks again !

Thanks jazzpt55,

I had to rush off and coach a 4th grade CYO game.

So why does a coach have had to play the game to be able to coach well?

Is the claim that no coach who hasn't played at the college level can be successful?

Nope Clay as long as that coach never stop learning the game they will be fine in high school but once they stop the game is over. But to be a college coach almost all coaches played at the college level 99%. All I was saying being on the court in a college game give a coach an advantage. They are thinks that go on during a game that coaches the didn't play at that level wont know off hand unless the had some teach them. That why I say once a coach stop learning the game is over. The game at the college level is a lot quicker too so when a coach the played the game can see thinks and adjust a lot quicker because the can see what is come and what the other coach is trying to expose. So with that saying coaches that played at the high levels have an advantage can turn an average team into a good team. Because they wont try to run the same offence every they will adjust to what have to work with. Adjustments is a major part of the game and how quick can a coach adjust without the game getting out of hand!!!!! Some coaches have to wait until half time but the game might be over by that time. Playing at the next level always has its advantages!!!!!!!! Like when trying to get a college job the want to know if the coach can be the face of the college. Where did they go to college and play? They also give u a situation during the game and ask what would the coach do? Its just a big step from high school to college all experience count from on and off the court!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're absolutely right about continuing to learn. The day a coach (or anyone in any job) thinks they know it all is the day he's no longer effective.

And I think there are some advantages to playing at a higher level that can definitely come into play, if only to be able to say "I did this at this level and it worked." But sometimes those who've played at a high level tend to think they have nothing to learn from those who didn't, and that can be very damaging. I learn from my players, from my parents (about how to deal with their child and their insights on other players they have seen for many years), from other coaches, from fans, from message boards, and so on.

And really, the main job of a coach is managing group dynamics. Xs and Os are vastly overrated, fun though they are ...

Clay,

In my opinion many coaches who have and have not played the game tend to let their coach's ego get into the way. The old an outdated coach through intimidation, get respect automatically because you're the coach days should be over. Respect should be earned by everyone. Everyone should be held to a high standard with checks and balances. And all forms of bully's need to be discouraged. While I agree the coach should be on the top of the team's leadership ladder, they should not be allowed to abuse their power. We have seen coaches go over board using physical and verbal abuse.

In my opinion (which many times is not the establishment's or popular opinion) if all things were equal, the coach who has played the game would be able to add a valuable experience advantage over someone who hasn't played the game. Just as someone who came from a particular language or cultural background would relate to it better than an outsider.

But obviously there are great coaches out there who have never played the game at a high level. There are also good and bad coaches who have played the game at a high level. I am not into the automatic absolutes or guarantees. You have to take the examples and relate to each and every circumstance as they are presented. Yes, continuing to learn is important to keep up with evolution. Change is the only constant. I have yet to meet anyone who knew it all.

There are many successful coaches who have never played at the college and/or pro level.

Yes your are right about good and bad coaches that played at the next level. The bad coaches were the one that taught about their stats before the team stats. A good coach didn't have to be the best player of the game but was the player that involve all their players in the game. I seen a lot coaches that abused their power against their players these days but these players parents sometimes wont step and say anything. Parents have to step up to stop the damage before its becomes permitted damage in the players life. That saying abuse is ok and that's not right. That's not coaching to me and others never force things to happen the will if they are meant to be.

Yes they are successful coaches at the high school level that never played college or pro level basketball. The think I was talking about if a coach wants to more to the college level it will be real hard. The coach has to be the exception to the rest and that doesn't happen to often. Most coaches in college played college basketball or some type of Pro ball. That's why I said the have the advantage to coach at the next level because college want to know if that coach can be the face of their school. They want a coach that they can give the history from a player to a coach.

There are a lot successful High School coaches but most will only be high school coaches unless the are that exception. They have to be good at their craft and a good people person for players and the press !!!!!!!!!

ballersdreams,

You make several really good points. Many people don't have the courage to speak up. Yes, the message that is sent when you don't speak up is that the abuse is ok. There needs to be a voice for the timid and voiceless. That was another motivation for writing my book.

Have you read Loehr's book
The new toughest training
For sports, the double goal coach by
Jim tompson or Vertagen's new book
Everyday is Game day?

jazzpt55,

I have the Double Goal Coach in my home office library. I looked into the other two and Loehr's book peaked my interest.

I do like good book recommendations. Thanks for the suggestions.
