Final SHC 69 SMB 54

Is Thomas going to be the top returner in the WCAL next year? Her and Coleman are quite a duo.

I think she would be considered by most to be the top returning player in the WCAL. Mitty also has a lot of their best players returning. SI is predominantly seniors this year.

She will be the top returning player in the Bay Area...if not then who? The only other player as dominate as her is DeCosta from SMS. I'lmari is the best all around player coming back next year. The kid can do it ALL!

Thomas is a great player. Love the kid!!! She's a sophomore, but only 14, birthday not until Oct. To play at such a high level, with a high basketball IQ, at such a young age, is truly a gift!!! Oh yeah, and she gets it done in the classroom too!!

Cityboy....

I can appreciate your love for all that is SF....but lets not get carried away.

I. Thomas is an excellent player, I have been watching her in AAU since her middle school days with MRC,

and she has continued her excellence right into high school with SHC.

I have had the opportunity to talk to her on many occasions over the years and she's a great kid...intelligent, respectful, well mannered
and just generally a very nice young lady.

BUT she is NOT the top returning player in the Bay Area....

That honor goes to USA national team member/starter Sabrina Ionescu from Miramonte.

northbaybbguru

Not to take anything away from the kid because she is a great player BUT...Let's not let the USA hype get in the way. When we talk player for player and skill for skill what has Ionescu done that Thomas hasn't? Has she won a state championship(s)? Skill wise Thomas does a little more than Ionescu in my opinion. I'm not sure who chooses those USA teams but I'm sure if Thomas had the opportunity she could play at that level as well and the kid is only 14. Matter of fact since you are the "guru" give me another 14yr old in the Bay Area better than Thomas? Truthfully the kid should only be a freshman in HS. What are you basing your criteria on besides her having the opportunity to try out for the USA team? Since that's the only thing you brought up. She doesn't play in a tough league so I think her numbers are a little inflated.

snacks5

She is ranked the #1 Shooting guard in her class. Lauren Cox is the #1 OVER ALL player and Sabrina Ionescu is 5th OVER ALL. Personally I like Leonna Odom from Chaminade and she's ranked 7th OVER ALL. I do my homework snacks5. You asked me to name you one batter I can give you 4 more better by "ranking" and probably a few more that the experts haven't put as high

For everybody who thought the WCAL wasn't the toughest league in the state and had this and that to say about me mentioning strength of schedule Presentation just beat your beloved Carondelete team.....sigh....

I was referring to thomas being the best 2017 in the Bay Area, not Ionescu. I was agreeing with you lol, put your gun away lol

Im not putting down Thomas...shes excellent....I think shes a ballplayer!! I really like her and her game.

Ionescu is a guard with the ball in her hands and is a triple double machine, she has the ability to affect the game way more at her position....Thomas is a big. Cut the head of the snake off at the guard position, you can neutralize the big.

While Thomas balls against the best in Nor cal....and has great success....Ionescu goes and balls against the best in the world during the summer.....

and the 14 yr old argument...I don't want to hear it.....SHES A SOPHOMORE...PERIOD.

The age issue is not relevant...shes a sophomore....that's her class.....it is what it is....I don't care how good she would
be if she was a freshman...why? because she is NOT a freshman.

northbaybbguru, yes, Thomas is a sophomore, nobody is arguing that. She's a 14 year old sophmore who just so happens to be one of the best in her class. Her age is definitely not an issue, as she has proved she can hold her own at this level, both on the court and in the classroom. You don't see tthis situation too often. I only mentioned her age to emphasize how truly gifted the kid is. Exactly what was the problem with that? GEESH

Thomas is not a post. Maybe you need to catch more games. She plays where ever the coach puts her. She brings the ball up the court, shoots 3's and they even run clear out iso plays for her from the wing. I'm not saying Ionescu doesn't ball against the best in the world I'm saying she has been afforded that opportunity. Give that opportunity to Thomas and I'm sure she will be more than impressive. I've been watching this game for a long time on many levels and Thomas is special. She's a sophomore in class for HS and a 14yr old on the AAU circuit which she has been playing in her age group and the 2 age groups above. If both are what we think they are we will see Tuesday and if they both win they will battle it out in NorCal and all these messages on this board won't matter. Playing against the best in the world WITH a team full of great players won't help her now shes got her team and Thomas has got hers now let the chips fall where they may

KKROSS22..

I was responding to CITYBOY's comments.....not yours......so no worries. :)

lets get this straight everyone...I think THOMAS is one heck of a player!!!

By any measurement she's great.....as a 14 yr. old or as a sophomore....

I was just responding to CITYBOY'S comment that she was the best returning player in the bay area.

She's not...

Sabrina Ionescu is.

and I have seen Thomas play quite a bit on the AAU circuit.....AGAINST HER OWN AGE GROUP NO LESS...

In fact, against her own age group I witnessed her MRC team in the 7th grade PACIFIC DISTRICT QUALIFIER FINAL 2 yrs. ago

lose to a team by 30 in the championship game.....again, against kids her own age (and younger).....

Thomas is a stud no doubt....I don't deny that.....BUT this whole argument was started by CITYBOY stating Thomas was the top returning player in the bay area and me stating Ionescu was the top returner.

PLEASE don't morph this into me doing any kind of bashing towards Thomas.

this reminds me of the old Michael Jordan vs Magic Johnson arguments....if I said Jordan was better, all the Magic supporters would get their feelings hurt and act like I was disrespecting Magic....I wasn't.....They were BOTH great. Magic is my starting point guard on my greatest of all time team. But Jordan was better.

I understand the SHC bandwagon is getting pretty full right now......but C'mon.

I'm done arguing this point....

northbayguru, I appreciate you clarifying what you meant.
I am not one to pin players against one another, don't think it really benefits anyone to do so. Sabrina is a good player, no doubt. Thomas is a good player no doubt. There are several good players in the Bay which could be a part of this conversation. Do I think there's other players in the Bay just as good as Sabrina. Yes. The big difference, like CityBoy415 mentioned, is Sabrina has been afforded the opportunity to do things some of these other players haven't. Every parent and/ or coach can't send their kid down to Colorado Springs to tryout for the USA team. If they could, who knows how many players from the Bay could have made the team. IJS
Not saying this is the case with these 2 players, but there are plenty of instances when player A is ranked higher than player B, not because they are the better player, but because they have had better opportunities to gain exposure or prove themselves worthy (i.e. playing for a Nike team, going to exposure camps, playing for USA team, going to the TOC). How many players do you know which should be on the ESPN Hoopgurlz list, but not there? I am a firm believer, that unless you put 2 elite players on the same playing field or have them square up head to head, play 1 on 1, there is no way to really know which one is absolutely better than the other.

Your totally free to pick and choose who YOU THINK is the best player is that's your prerogative. How ever giving me an example from some AAU game 2 years ago isn't going to go very far with me. I'm not big on AAU and it's meaningless to me.

What I do know is that this year in the WCAL (the BEST conference in the CALIFORNIA) Thomas put in work. What I do know is that playing for SHC who played the toughest schedule in Northern California Thomas PUT IN WORK. What is fact is that neither of them have a state championship so who one might like over the other is a fact of opinion. McDonalds or Burger King?

By no means am I saying Sabrina isn't good. She's a hell of a player. What I am saying is that she was afforded an opportunity that a lot of kids aren't in trying out for the USA team and I do believe that if Thomas was afforded that opportunity especially in her age group she would be just as good if not better. I would also like to believe is Thomas played in the same league as MM her numbers would be inflated as well. I might be a little off in saying this but I'd almost bet Thomas led the WCAL in scoring this year at about 17 a game.

I'm not arguing with you at all I'm voicing my opinion making valid points not bringing up AAU basketball from 2 years ago.....

Nobodies jumping on any bandwagon. If anybody is rooting hard against SHC right now it's kkross22. You can't get bent out of shape because a few people don't agree with you bro this is an opinionated forum lol. Come on now....

northbaybbguru

I guess you would tell me Laettner was better than Shaq too because he was chose to play on the USA Olympic team?

I wonder if cityboy will be on here giving his stats and "facts" about SHC and other programs after Tuesday. Bet we wont hear another peep about SHC and Thomas from him after Tuesday. On another note, IF SHC wins, he will never shut up. SMS dont fail me now!!

Tuesday night's game is going to be a good one!!! I say we table the discussion until Tuesday evening. May the best squad win!!!!

Why would I stop talking if SHC lost? It's not like they would be losing to a bad team, this is the number 1 team in NorCal. As far as I'm concerned I have won any debate with anybody hating on SHC anyway because none of you had them picked to go this far. Numbers don't lie and neither do facts. Don't be a hater because I know how to give valid points when debating. Learn how to debate and step your game up. Nobody on here has been able to argue the numbers or facts I've given. So like you have been stay on the SMS bandwagon and keep it movin.

kkross22

It's going to be a GREAT game. I have the winner of this game going on to win the whole thing! And unlike the haters on this forum I'd be rooting for SMS if they beat SHC. It's girls basketball at the end of the day lol. Me trying to bring some recognition to a team that gets no love has nothing to do with me loving the game and watching GOOD basketball. I also think these 2 teams will be battling it out for the next 3 years so if they think a loss is going to keep me quiet they got that all wrong! I'll be on this site talking about SHC while they deserved to be mentioned with the best in the state.

Game Recognize Game!

CityBoy415,
JT!!!!!
As you can see, I edited my last response, but this is what I had posted at first:
You will never see me rooting hard against SHC. Matter of fact, 2 years ago I sat in the stands at Arco rooting for both SHC's boys and girls as they battled for a state championships. My kid plays for SMS, so of course my loyalty lies with my kid and her squad. But for the record, no matter who wins Tuesday night's game, I will be in the stands at Arco and Cal rooting for that team.
I didn't want to ruffle any feathers which is why I deleted it. But I see at least we're on the same page.

kkross22

I already know. I haven't seen you bash any team or player yet on here. I'd tell you what I 'd like to see is taking the BEST in NorCal and forming 1 AAU team that travels to all the MAJOR tournaments to bring some love back to NorCal. With the crop of young talent out here right now it would be a sight to see. Your daughter, Thomas, DeCosta, the sophomore at SMB, and a couple others would turn the states upside down on the AAU circuit. Wishful thinking lol

Cityboy the sophomore at SMB & Kkross daughter once played together when they were 10-11 "California Ballaz"

kkross22,

Just my thoughts are definitely this is a good matchup for SMS. I think SHC matches up best with SMS of all the quality teams remaining. All four teams represent how far girls basketball in Northern California has come. Both SMS and SHC have awesome young players, too many to mention on both sides. Since this post is to you, I will only pick out one of the young players from each team.

Sierra Smith of SMS and Imani Thomas of SHC (not sure on the spelling) are two young players I have enjoyed watching play. They have both transitioned into high school ball very well. I will be a fan of them both regardless to the outcome and wish both teams much success. Keep giving your daughter all that positive encouragement, it will continue to pay off.

Have a great game !

CityBoy415,
Sierra is going back to the CA Ballaz to finish out her last 2 years of AAU. Tried something different, it didn't work for us, so going back where my kid can just ball out and have fun. One of the other players on that list is supposed to be joining as well, but can only say for sure that's where my kid will be.

Jbvilla,
That team you just mentioned was definitely one of the best 7th grade teams around. Sierra misses playing with your kid.

Paytc,
Thanks! I am a firm believer that you get out of your kids what you feed them, so I try my best to keep things positive and do what I can to encourage Sierra. I am also a firm believer in discipline too, so I stay on her as well. As a parent, you have to. Your book is sitting here on my nightstand. I have had it for awhile, just haven't had time to crack it open as I've been working 12 plus hour days going on 2 months now, and with Sierra's basketball schedule, when I have down time, I am usually napping. :) I can't wait to read it though. And I told Sierra as well, as soon as she gets time, she will be reading it too.

I feel you on that man good AAU programs are hard to find. Since Oscar died from MRC the city has been lacking a quality program. I'm glad the coach from SHC decided to start a program called the Hoyas. It'll be interesting to see how they do this summer.

All this talk about how good a player is or not. Some people will rank players because they are on one team or another. But the true ranking is when the walk on the floor as a freshman in college and become a impacted player on the D1 court. For example, Mariya Moore of Louisville starter, Gabby Green of Cal starter, Natalie Romeo starter Nebraska and many others. That's when you know the ranking was give or earned.
