On Friday the California Department of Public Health released the guidance, which will allow outdoor "contact" sports to be played once a county reaches a COVID-19 infection rate of 14 new cases per-day for every 100,000 residents. San Joaquin County population is 781,462. That equates to allowing contact once the county achieves 109 new cases per day, its "red" tier (allowing baseball and softball). Football is "orange" tier. For the high-contact sports like football and water polo athletes must be tested for COVID-19 every week. Baseball and softball would not have that requirement, and once the county reaches the "red" tier no testing will be required for any of those sports. 140 new cases were reported yesterday, none today, per
LA Times. The numbers are actually gathered weekly on Tuesdays. Latest for San Joaquin County was 16 new cases per-day (for every 100,00). So we are getting closer. With 2 weeks away, it is still possible this game happens per the health department guidelines.
However, since St. Mary's is a private school, it may not be subjected to the same criteria for the public schools. In fact, I was hearing early on that the private schools were looking into establishing their own games. But, it would be risky and may create a sore spot with the CIF (possibly not being allowed back in with the CIF). As of last week, I have heard the Rams were practicing (in pads) but following safety guidelines for "orange" tier and high-contact sports. Also, reported by the
LA Times, the independent charter schools can definitely participate in sports if they decide it can be done safely. Hence, I expect this game to happen. But, I may have doubts the game vs Lincoln-Stockton (tentatively scheduled for 3/19 @ St. Mary's) will happen. I'm checking in with my chain gang lead to see if there are any updates.
On a very sad note, lost a dear friend (over 25+ years) and co-member of our chain gang crew for St. Mary's a couple weeks ago (on 2/14) due to COVID-19. He will truly be missed, not just on the football field. 😥
