Will he get another hs job since coach Walters was let go at USF? Or is he looking to stay at the college level.

No idea if he was brought in by outsider or Walters himself. If it was Walters he has to be done as well. Otherwise he's a legit candidate for the job. Sort of an odd situation...

Do you think he is qualified or has a college coach temperament? I don't say that as a point of disrespect, just wondering because he has worked with high school kids for a long time. I know some coaches start at high school and then work their way up. Bill Walsh is the most famous example I can think of. I think Walsh went from Hayward High to SJ State, and then from there.

He mentored college coaches while at DLS. He's more qualified than a lot of current head coaches. This is a guy who is well respected around the hoop community.

Would be nice for him to get the job? He knows basketball and would be easier then coaching in high school. College kids can perform, in high school you may have kids that just can't do it. His system would do good in college.

Problem with his system in college is to get young men who have desire to play after college. Tough to get a high level recruit when you know the team may only score 35 points a contest. That won't get you a next level look... Great for winning high school, but not college.

His system would make it difficult to recruit guards. John Thompson runs similar system at Georgetown and lack of quality guards has really hurt that program.

posted this in another thread.....just my opinion:

Let me first say I think Allocco is a great coach and a proven track record......

I don't see how having him as an assistant at the D-1 level helps. He for sure knows his x's and o's and how to teach winning basketball but a seasoned head coach should already have the same level of knowledge. He doesn't have deep recruiting ties like guys who have been on the trail for 5, 10, 15 plus years on the west coast. If you look at most west coast programs, they have assistants who have been recruiting the area since Allocco was at Northgate. Finally, D-1 kids want to be developed into pros (NBA, DLeague or overseas) and he has no track record of developing kids (at the 4 year level of course). I'm not saying that he isn't capable, just saying the resume isn't there yet. When you get on the recruiting trail in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, (and even southern CA) etc., people wont care about DLS and the games he won. Most D-1 kids are coming from successful high school programs themselves.

The main focus of assistants are (among other things)
scouting/prep - Allocco is A+

recruiting - ???????

Player development- ????????

I honestly feel he would be more of a benefit to a younger, less experienced D-1 head coach. My personal feeling is that he is outta there unless Lavin takes over. Will be interesting to see how things play out on the Hilltop.....

Would be surprised if Allocco does not get it. He left a great job with a veteran group knowing Walters time was almost up. If he does not get it USF really screwed him! Will he go back to high school, or go be an Asst. For another head coach?

Alloco was a the game last night sporting a USF sweatsuit. No way would he advertise that if he was part of Walters crew. I also saw him vividly shaking his head in disbelief when the Lamelo Ball pulled up from 40 like steph curry only too shoot an air ball when they were up by 17 in the 4th. Classic.

Allocco was hired by the AD. Not by Walters. Has a multi year deal at USF as an assistant. Whether he is retained or not, will get paid. Made a lot of money as an asst.

The original plan was to get Lavin and have Allocco as his asst. since Allocco almost went to St. John's a few years ago to be his asst.

However, USF did not have the money that Lavin wanted for him and his staff.

Allocco will either stay as an asst. or get paid to leave.

Rumors are that Kyle Smith, former St. Mary's assistant and current Columbia University Head Coach will get the job.

Other candidates were David Grace, Gregg Gottlieb, Jim Hayford, Rick Croy, Travis Decuire.

USF AD went after Steve Lavin really hard but could not close the deal due to dollars.

Bottom line, Allocco was hired by AD (weird) and will remain on staff or get paid.

that must be strange for a new Head Coach to inherit a tenured assistant. Odd.

What about Chris Mullin? He owns a house out here. His kids went to HS here. He probably is hating it at St John's. He knows Allocco.

I'm pretty sure that pair would not work out at all. Mullin was not a fan of Frank when his kid played for him at DLS.

I didn't know that but this shows you the problem with having a tenured assistant at a college. Some head coaches will say no because of the baggage they inherit. Not player baggage, but coaching baggage (no disrespect intended towards Frank, but the Mullin example shows that no matter who, there are some naysayers). So basically whoever gets the head coaching job, in a sense, will need to be approved by the assistant. I have the feeling USF won't be returning to the Bill Russell days anytime soon.

What is your source for this?

Hoops you have some knowledge that other do not know? If your facts are correct and they hire Kyle Smith I do not think Allocco would stay or would he?

Some of the thoughts here are bizarre. Chris Mullin is not leaving St John's and Frank Allocco is not getting the job

My sources are correct: They are hiring Kyle Smith who has 1 game left to coach at Columbia tomorrow night against a really good UC Irvine team that has 28 wins. Game is in NYC at Columbia tomorrow night. Then Kyle Smith is off to SF for a press conference on Thursday most likely.

Vern Glenn said as much tonight on his sports segment of CBS (KPIX) news.

Any word on whether Killingsworth might ask out of his LOI at Columbia? His family is moving back to Arkansas

Good hire. Any word on Allocco's fate?

Since Smith was an assistant at St. Mary's for 10 years, he no doubt knows who Frank is.

Frank was at state game watching Ratinho with USF gear on. My bet is he stays and is part of the staff.

Very awkward to have an assistant who wants your job.......especially as a new coach.

Allocco has been around the block and I don't think all assistants have the ambition to be in charge. He might be satisfied with a solid role as part of the brain trust.

Heard that Frank is out at USF as Asst coach. Taking administration position with program.

What a debacle. Then again if it's a cushion job making good money the joke is on USF.
