I just heard The kid from Weston Ranch Gavin Wilburn is going to a JC due to not enough credits to attend a NCAA school. Anybody ever heard of not enough credits to attend a NCAA.

maybe not meeting A-G, or taking the proper 16 core courses needed for NCAA clearinghouse
Don't the coaches or school monitor these kind things for the students athlete . So basically athlete dosent qualify to attend NCAA if requirement not met.

If you want to play NCAA college sports and receive a scholarship at the DI or DII level, you will need to register and be cleared by the NCAA. The Eligibility Center is the organization within the NCAA that determines the academic eligibility and amateur status for all NCAA DI and DII athletes.

and to answer your questions, schools send in the reports, transcripts, and test scores. But there is no one working at schools who have the sole job of making sure your student/athlete is NCAA eligible.

i work at a high school and could write a book about how many athletes and parents have no clue on how this works.

for the elite players and top prospects, the colleges will make sure this is all done of course. but i could tell you stories about how the MVP of the league never took the SATs. Or how families and coaches make it difficult to be recruited, by not following through or communicating. I can tell you stories about how coaches who were let go, bad mouth players so that they fall off the radar their senior year.

there is a difference between the haves and have nots. lots of families who have been through the process or have student athletes who just take everything because that is what they were told to do, are eligible and get into schools. parents who don't know are often late to game, often expected someone to do all that work for them.

Thanks for info, thats to bad for Wilburn this kid has some talent and was looking forward to seen him play at a local University. I guess we will see how he does at JC level. It's upsetting to hear this because seems like there was no guidance by Coach or Weston Ranch staff. They knew they had a talented athlete in Wilburn. Would of been nice if the coach and staff educated the parents and athlete of the college process. Just shows how much coach really cared for this kid , instead of just winning games and advertising next year's schedule. Good luck Wilburn.

I don’t think you can solely blame the Weston Ranch HC or staff. Grades are first and foremost the student’s responsibility. I don’t know his home situation, but he’s been around enough AAU coaches and other parents that I’m sure someone had let him know the classes he needed to take and grades needed. The HC can and should be a resource, but there are a lot of people such as counselors, teachers and other mentors that he could have sought advice from. I hope he has a great Juco experience and is able to move up and play at the 4-year level that suits him. Nothing wrong with a little Juco ball.

This is one of my kids. PERIOD. Gavin has a tremendous support system. Mother, Father, Coaches, Mentors, etc...you can lead a horse to the water but you can not make it drink. He knew what he had to accomplish and didn't take it seriously enough before it was too late. He still had opportunities to go Division 1 but sit out this season but declined to do so. He will be fine but let's not look for blame or speculate.

Damn...He will bounce back. PREP SCHOOL maybe?

Glad to hear he has mentors to guide him. Wish him best of luck at JC level. Hopefully he learned from his experience and will improve his Discipline.

Cool. U place him there? Is it a good fit?
G wanted to be in a different area. I pushed for City if we were taking the JC route. The City staff was on him hard to get there as well as Marquise Hargrove out of Franklin both chose to get away a little bit. I am rooting for all these kids to be kids as long as possible and live out there dreams. This adult stuff will be here.
