This is a tough one. The Rainbows are scheduled to play the unbeaten (4-0) Spartans in San Jose this weekend. But Santa Clara County has banned all contact sports until at least Dec. 21 due to the pandemic. So where can this game be played? Perhaps at a neutral Mountain West site or somewhere else that can accommodate these teams. Then there is the related issue of where the Spartans can practice going forward. It can't be in Santa Clara County because of the strict virus rules. And what about the SJS budget? The football program at the school has been hanging by a fiscal thread for years. Moving the players, coaches and support staff to another, safer location for several weeks for practices and games would be quite expensive. The Spartans' previous two games vs. Fresno State and Boise State were wiped out by the plague. If the Hawaii game cannot be played, there might be a temptation by the San Jose administration to end the season. This has become a total s...show for a team with its best record in 65 years.

It really is a tough deal for San Jose State, which has had these games taken away or put in limbo for things happening at other programs and a county decision

Also, if they have to travel more than 150 miles to play wouldn't they have to quarantine for 14 days upon return? With no fans allowed anyway Chabot or CSM? Please, don't take me seriously on that.

A very big factor in all of this: The ultra-stressed SJS sports budget. It is wafer-thin for football. The 2020 revenue is basically barely above zero. No body bag games with big payouts. No paid attendance. No substantial TV or radio. Zippo. Nada. You have to wonder what the SJS honchos with dollar control will decide. Is it really worth it to continue a deeply flawed season at this juncture? Can they afford it? What's the point?

It’s too bad that these games are not on the internet for paying fans like we do in high school football. It’s not a lot of money but at least it’s something. I can’t remember the last time I saw a San Jose State game on TV. I guess that most of the revenue they usually get is from paid attendance.

Getting back to High School Football,if it turns out to be a no go this year who it hurts most is the senior class. Teams with strong seniors lose out. Teams in the CCS like Serra, VC and Saint Francis always have talent spread out from freshman to seniors. For example Saint Francis has a very strong junior class and sophomore class with only an above average senior class. So next year is the high water mark. This years SF team would be good but next year they will be a state championship contender. I hope and want to see football played this year for the seniors.

Palma may have its strongest line and its most physical team in years. At least three of their Sr linemen will be playing somewhere (one among top in state and 4 that are 3 year or returning starters) and they have another senior LB that will be playing somewhere. Juniors and sophs have talent but this seems like a year they could do some damage in CCS. Next season they will have skill talent especially QB but will be tough to reload line as good as this year and while should be decent I think this is the year they could do some damage in playoffs. They play a couple WCAL teams I think they will be at least favored in if the season happens.
