I was looking at the NorCal schedules today for upcoming playoff dates for D1 and Open Divisions. Why is it that the semi-final rounds are not played at a neutral site? Seems like a big advantage for the higher seeded host schools to get to play home games all the way up to finals.

Always been that way
It is a big advantage
favors the higher seeded team
regular season record and strength of schedule matter

Guess this adds to another reason a bubble Open team would NOT want to get pulled into Open division. Would most likely get high seed in their respective Division and home games throughout, but instead get pulled into Open as low seed on road.

I remember back in the day, Division 5 had a neutral site for ALL of the quarterfinal-final games. All of the games were played (both boys and girls) over a 3 day period at Mendocino college in Ukiah. It was a pretty cool environment and took away home court advantage. Too bad they couldn't do that with the first two rounds and have the finals at a central location.

Im sure some JC's in the area would LOVE to host...

But would they host for free, like the high schools?

Also, note that the D2-D5 NorCal championship games are at home sites. Talk about an advantage ...

That is a huge change for this year. Hasn't got a lot of play either.

It is nice to give the Open/Division I more of a "big stage" over the other divisions, but it does change regional weekend in a big way

It obviously is expensive to play these games at a big venue so I can understand the reasoning $$$ to do that. But cant they at least have a neutral high school site? That would be much more sense. I think SJS lower divisions at least use Galt and Tokay high school sites.

Anyone know what happened with American Canyon? Is it a money thing or something else? I know this idea was floated by the CIF last year at the state finals

I think you have that right, jaymel. Even if a venue like American Canyon were free, the attendance would not be as good. Having a home team host a NorCal title game on a Saturday night is going to draw a big crowd -- and CIF is going to take a chunk of that gate, if not all of it.

Let's just say McClatchy or Campolindo (just to pick two) were hosting a NorCal championship game -- how packed would the gym be?

What do you do if a school like Pinewood or ESCP is to host? The gyms just aren't big enough, those places sell out on regular league games. Pinewood might have to open the weight room for VIP Seating! ha ha

There are criteria for hosting in terms of gym size, etc., and you have to submit a request. I've never been to those gyms so I don't know if they meet the criteria, which I think is 500 seats.

in the sjs, at least the criteria used to be at least seating capacity of 1500 to host a nor cal game, could be even higher close to maybe 1700, although I know some schools have skirted that issue, but there is a criteria in place

I believe the D5 number is 500, as it is modified for size of school. I know when we put together the plans for the Bentley gym, we designed it so it could host NorCals if needed. Never got to use it on the girls' side, though ...

As per a neutral site, Bentley would be a great location to host girls NorCals. The school is centrally located in the Bay Area with easy access to and from Highway 24. But as per Clayk’s comments, seating capacity might be an issue.

On the same topic as per this year’s North Coast girl’s semifinals, all divisions will be played at the higher seed’s home court except for Div. III.

BOD vs St. Mary's @ Laney College
Salesian vs Campolindo @ Albany HS

I suspect the Gym size at BOD and Salesian is reason for the change in venue.

Comments welcomed.
