How do schools deal with students who want to go to the Playoffs?

This is a question that comes up for schools that have earlier Friday games or students from SoCal coming up to Sac. If a student fan wants to go to the 10am Friday playoff game, it is probably not an excused absence if you call your attendance office and say you went to watch a playoff game. Even though this is a school activity, it would not be a valid reason to be absent.

And then the school and the team would love more fans, but logistically it is very difficult. I guess parents can just call in their students sick? Or maybe the school should make a special provision for the absence? what about cancelling school that day or adjusting a bell schedule? but then education code requires a certain number of minutes.

probably no one cares about this, but do schools do anything different just for a state title game? And then an even bigger issue is with the recent walkout to protest gun violence. Many schools were not excusing kids to walk out but if they allow kids to go to a basketball game......are they saying the basketball is more important than student protesting?

Get with your school’s administration think about making it a field trip and have permission slips signed. Rent school buses and all students pay $10-$15 to ride the bus. If the event goes as a non-absent the school district doesn’t lose money.

Not 100% sure if Stuart Hall is doing it this year, but when Convent went in 2003 they gave all of us (Hall and Convent) the day off and had buses and tickets. Students weren’t forced to go but most did and Convent pulled a stunner of an upset.

I haven’t talked to anybody but I expect much of the same this Friday at noon for our game.

Let the kids go as a field trip. I’d write my kid a note otherwise.
