43 States are playing High School Basketball or have finished their season.
Sadly, Hawaii cancelled High School Basketball.
5 States have approved start dates for hoops (Washington, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico, West Virginia).
And then there's CA. Crickets.

It is not that hard to decipher. I am not saying I agree, but it is pretty clear why. There are a lot of factors that contributed to the no basketball from the leaders; to each individual who refuses to mask up or stay home as much as possible. So here we are. Lesson learned. I saw that last Friday there were 3,678 new cases that day. Compared to 6 weeks ago there were 39,000 (forgot exact) new cases. So clearly something has worked. Just imagine if everyone listened back in July instead of thinking their rights were being infringed on.

From everything I have heard, they are aiming for a May start to Basketball.

By then most of the students and teachers should be vaccinated, and I think you'll see games resume.

The numbers have gone down significantly due to vaccinations.

I have a schedule with tryouts beginning on April 5 and games starting as early as late April. Now, how many games get cancelled on that schedule will depend a lot on our county tier since currently basketball can only compete under the Yellow tier. But, things are changing every week so we may see some basketball!

Wrote something similar on the girls basketball board, but there seems to be renewed hope for a basketball season with the way the state moved on football and the improving virus numbers.

I hope Basketball gets canceled.
Let the kids begin their AAU season now.
I don't coach anymore and have never coached AAU. Just my opinion.

Might want to read this article in the SJ Mercury News published today regarding some legal maneuvering that is happening quickly.

Best swishes,
Coach Forslund

The question I've had on the lawsuit is it grants prep sports the same freedom to play as college and the pros with the same protocols (if my amateur legal mind understands it correctly). If so, that is a lot of procedures to put in place that would be challenging for high schools to implement.

There are some seniors I would love to see have some sort of high school season. No one is ”stopping” AAU from playin if anything some local facilities are probably doing swell with the limited spaces for practice and games.

Streak, you raise a good point! The HS level (at least at our school) relies a lot on parent volunteers to run games and events from scorebook, scoreboard, shot clock, lane timing, scoring, etc. With new procedures, we may need even more volunteers so this could be tough as well. The other issue I am concerned about is the shortage of officials, but if they know there won't be many (or any) fans maybe that will change their willingness to officiate.

Another thing is JV and Freshman ball. I would think that implemented protocols for things like cleaning surfaces, seats, equipment, etc. would make doubleheaders difficult and tripleheaders practically impossible.

I have family and friends coaching high school basketball in Michigan. They started about 4 weeks ago, with no stoppages so far. Playing doubleheaders. Everyone's masked up. Each participant is limited to 2 guests. Between contests, everyone leaves and areas are cleaned.
