Humboldt-Del Norte League votes for three-season calendar

It really makes a lot more sense than the crap that the CIF mandated. Having a three season model like they're proposing allows student to not have to choose between impacted sports (basketball, soccer, softball). The current two sport model will kill smaller D4-6 schools and possibly D3. The disadvantage is that most sports will not be able to compete for NCS Championship and competition will be relegated to 10 local schools on the north coast or so it seems.

I wonder how hard the norcal sections pushed for a two or three sport season. We all know that no matter what, the Southern Sections dictates what the CIF does because of the voting power of the large section.

I don't see how it makes sense to play football in the fall in Southern California, where Covid-19 cases are still really high -- or an indoor sport like volleyball.

Case counts are very low in the far northern part of the state, so hopefully it will work for them. But here's an issue: If you get a few positive cases on a football team, do you quarantine them for 14 days? If so, then that's two games out of the schedule, plus you'd think you'd want to practice for a few days before you played another game. I talked to Justin Alumbaugh for a story (the DLS football coach) and his biggest concern was that the players couldn't lift weights and maintain their strength to play in a collision sport. So you lose two weeks of practice, two weeks of conditioning, two games out of the schedule, and then you play immediately?

Then again, maybe no one will test positive and it all goes swimmingly. And hopefully we'll have some treatment/prevention advances by November so basketball and the other indoor sports can start playing with no issues.

Clay,

I think that's why the HDN decided to move it to March. I'm also wondering if they'll have a basketball season, given the December start date. Do you have any idea why the CIF decided to go to a two sport model instead of a three, with possibly a January start date and ending in late June? I would be surprised if other leagues (especially the smaller ones) will follow suit and follow this three sport model

If they are going to be playing just local teams it makes sense. if everyone else is playing at different times there won’t be much of an option for non league games. Perhaps they can schedule games with Southern Oregon teams depending on the schedule Oregon has.

CIF, like everyone else pretty much, just kicked the can down the road and is hoping that something changes.

Obviously we've thought about it a lot in terms of the Jamboree, and IF there's a vaccine and IF it's able to be manufactured and distributed before the end of the year, then Jan. 1 makes sense.

Now what they'll do if the vaccine is approved but doesn't roll out in large numbers until Jan. 1 is unclear.

Clay as a girls basketball coach in the HDN, I believe they made the right call at this point in time going three seasons of sports. It's tough not traveling outside of our league but it is what it is. I am not sure Dec 14th will happen for basketball up here...for that matter I don't think it will happen for CIF for football even more so. I am almost certain the CIF schedule will morph into something drastically different in the next few months. Honestly I foresee that the HDN schedule may move those first session sports to spring...never know but we may see you at the Jamboree in April. Time will tell.

So far, so good in the HDN area ... and if things stay the same, it makes sense to play the traditional seasons.

But just like the South, where everybody's planning to play, we'll see how things shake out in the next few weeks.
