Cal lost two offensive assistants this week for promotions at Kansas. It has brought up a bigger issue with Cal football and how much it pays coaches.

The payment of coaches, especially assistants, is the latest battle ground in college football.

Good programs with good head coaches aren't anything without great assistant coaches at all levels. Its plain and simple. What people do not know or understand is what the head coaches do off of the field where a lot of their money is earned. At least at the high school level where equipt.managers, Strength and conditioning coaches, transportation coordinators and so on aren't hired help. But on the practice fields and in games really good assistant coaches are really the heart beat of any coaching staff. It is not just cliche' to say without good assistant coaches the outcomes would not be the same.

I'm no money guru but $185k for position coaches in the Pac12 sounds pretty competitive. Most position coaches in the Mountain West don't make anywhere near that. Maybe they no longer see a bright future in coaching under Dykes?

From the article linked in the OP,

Well, Cal's offensive line coach made $111,500 last year. And UCLA's offensive line coach made $723,000.

Or maybe the coaches leaving no longer see a bright future at CAL. The coaches leaving Dykes now reminds me a lot of coaches leaving Tedford (Tosh) for more money and higher positions.

Nobody put a gun to there head to work at CAL in the first place. People come and go all the time in the work force. Article says they could realistically be replaced by HS coaches? I don't get that statement. Unless they mean for that sort of money. All the money in the world couldn't move me from bay area to Kansas. Have you been to Kansas? Lane Kifffen makes $1m + at Bama and he's a boob. A lot of inequities in the world.

I will say this. Harbaugh is doing it right. Pay me a little less at Michigan so I can pay my assistance more.

Bubba...Whatever his pay was it sucks for CAL to lose any offensive coaches. The UCLA coach making 723,000?? Maybe he's got some special pictures or something!

Pantera- Good call with Tosh, the Cal program hasn't been the same since they lost one of the best recruiters in the country. IMO Likens and Yenser are looking out for themselves, Dykes and his staff probably have one more year in Berkeley. Those two are probably just hedging their bets and getting the hell outta Dodge while they can, wait Dodge is in Kansas.....

LL33, have you been to Lawrence, Kansas? I doubt it. Actually an awesome place. Another question, have you looked around Berkeley recently? Now, that is an expensive pit! Those coaches can afford nice homes in Lawrence and raise their young families is a nice and safe community. Or they can live in a dump in Berkeley or commute from Tracy. Easy choice for most.

Brother in law went to KU. They live in Manhattan now which is home of KSTATE. Cousins live in Wichita. Been there plenty of times. Have you? Its one thing when you are 18-22 years old going to College. It was 9 degrees there today. It was nearly 70 in the bay today. Next thing you are going to tell me is Nebraska is appealing. Get a clue.

LL33,
I got family there myself and been there a bunch. Great place. If you can't handle a few months of tough weather, I get it. Also, if you enjoy protests, riots, crime, tat parlors and weed dispensaries....and $1.0 million fixer uppers...I also get why you like Berkeley. The assistant coaches got the clue...and left.

Let's get some things straight. Cal is a good place-The city of Berkeley sucks. So does Wichita. Too cold in winter and too humid in summer. I moved my folks back to Cali two years ago from there. Cal assistants need to be paid more- period.

Thank you. The people are very nice in the midwest. I can't say anything bad. That is about it though. My aunt bought a home 30 years ago for 100k wichita. Its worth 105k today. My uncle bought a home in the city 30 + years ago for $80k. Its worth $2M today. Chinese people offer him cash daily for it. Same story throughout bay area. Just so much more desirable.

Pay the coaches more and you will see a better product. Agreed.

I live in the bay area and don't earn that much. I have a hard time feeling sorry for anyone that does.

Lol ! Always one of my favorite lines....

Regarding Lupoi- He could recruit like no other but lost ALL credibility how he left. Known him since he was a kid and very disappointed how he handled things. He also recruited very talented players who were high risk, high reward. Very few of them did a good Job on and off the field. From what I know, he is floundering As an "intern" at Alabama who isn't even on the staff.

Pure speculation on my part but maybe working with (and under) Tony Franklin is not all its cracked up to be...

89- Both guys got promotions in their job- not a lateral move. That's what happens with college sports assistant coaches. Look at the bios of assistant coaches and you see a plethora of jumping around.

Regarding Franklin, seems like a weird dude but he's great at what he does and has quite a following. He will find a guy that fits the system at OL and Peeler, who is on staff as a grad assistant but is already known as a gifted recruiter, will be the WR coach.

Lots of Cal players going this weekend. Comcast did a special last night on the Cal running backs. Lynch, Vereen, Anderson, & Forsett all playing big time roles in the league. Running back U! Well, it used to be.

I've watched him play and he's a legit back. I looked at his bio and hes bigger than I thought. On TV he doesn't look much bigger than Muhammad. Enwere is the one I like. My fear is that the transition to the pro game is going to be hard for the current players because of the system they run. I'm interested to see how the pro scouts evaluate Goff. He has the tools but they never come out of their spread at Cal.

Slick- he's much bigger than Muhammad, five inches and 45 lbs. He also has a good lean forward. Regarding Goff, when was the last time you saw Manning or Luck under center? He has good pocket presence, can make all the throws, and seems to have the smarts to pick up the pro verbiage when he gets there.

I just realized he was that much bigger. I used to gripe that Dykes didn't use NFL type backs but he has been the whole time.

Luck and Manning go in and out of shotgun/pistol. They both played under center in college. In the pros the spread teams run all the sets. Watch Dallas tomorrow. They will go empty, double tights, just about everything. Also play action is so big in the NFL that you have to go under there to get the safeties to move. I was listening to Salsbury in the car the other day and he was saying the same about Mariota. How Mariota was going to struggle going under center. Salsbury also said the level of QB play is regressing because players don't know how to play under center. I will say it would help if a NFL team really ran the spread with a spread QB. Problem is NFL coaches are stubborn. They will dip the toe but they're not diving into anything totally different.

I'm a Goff fan. I want to see him do well in the NFL. I just think that Cal should switch it up some. It sucks when they're up big still throwing the ball out of the spread only to have the opponent come back (Arizona). It would be nice if they had more of a power run set they could go to at times. That would help Goff tremendously.

I think Mariota and Goff will both adjust. Re the power running, they do go into a diamond backfield but I don't disagree with you. I loved when Cal would just wear teams down and run it down their throats late in the game. Nothing more demoralizing than imposing your will on the other team. Tedford used to say "be stubborn with the running game ".
