Jordan Brown update

I agree to a point, but not in this case. Jordan seems to have handled this with a lot of privacy and not drawn attention to it unless asked at an event like this. Recruiting is a different game for a player like this than other D1 recruits.

My guess (no real intel on it) is that Cal is the choice, but wants to make sure the program is stable after a really bad year

Was UCLA until Shareef took the last scholarship open spot. With rumors of 'Reef going to Memphis now, I think JB still holding out hope for UCLA.

Not sure why he would choose to play for a coach who turned Ivan Rabb from a surefire lottery pick to a mid-second rounder. Yes, Wyking Jones was the Bigs coach while working for Cuonzo before he was named the Head Coach...Let alone someone who's arguably the least qualified and overmatched Power 5 head coach...

Waiting this long makes absolutely no sense. Maybe its the look at me generation? CAL basically had fraternity walk ons playing at the end of last year. That was one of the worse teams in the history of Cal basketball and athletically speaking the golden bears programs are going in the the pooper. Financial mess over there. At end of day I guess it doesn't matter because most likely a 1 and done. Heck look at Michael Porter Jr. What did he play 50 minutes for so for Mizzzou this year.

The COACH didnt turn Rabb from a surefire lotto pick to a second rounder. RABB DID. With his play and or lack of it....SCOUTS questioned his motor and toughness on the court. And there concerns weren't answered to satisfaction based on his play hos last year at Cal.

RABB big mistake was not leaving after year 1. Took a gamble and it didn't pay. His weaknesses were exposed in year 2 and his stock fell. That is on him not the coach. Brown is not by any means a "SURE" bet. Nobody is but you hear people all the time throw that stuff around on here. Bigs that can't put it on the floor and face up are dinosaurs in today's NBA.

Do the kids ever think about also going after a 4 year degree on scholarship and then NBA free agency or overseas? Because trying 1 and done getting picked in 2nd round or not at all isn’t better then having a college degree eh?

Ivan Rabb is a TBD player. Lets not lose perspective. He is a rookie that is getting his footing in the league and is eager to improve. And so what if he wanted to come back to school for one more year. That was his choice. It was a mature one at that. If it meant not being a lottery pick then so be it. Don't bust a kid for wanting to stay in school.

Interesting that just about a month ago Jordan Brown took an official visit to Lousiana-Lafayette. Talk about a completely random school, maybe a former coach is working there now, or he has family there.

IMO it's down to two schools......Cal or Louisiana-Lafayette. While most of you would probably say go to Cal, I would actually say LL is the way to go, because he'll be able to start right away and absolutely dominate an easy league. I'm actually surprised more kids don't go to the smaller schools and just play their one year out there dominating where their draft stock can't really be affected. As opposed to going to a Pac 12 or SEC school and either riding the bench or not being able to adjust to the pace of play.

LL would be so random. Here is a kid that left woodcreek to get more competition at Prolific Prep and he is seriously considering a school that plays against D1 teams that none of us have heard of. Huh? I got 20 and 10 against Texas State but I should be playing UK. No way does he go to LL.

Ivan Rabb is making more money this season then he would playing for cal. You can always go back to school after your playing career.
Anyone can do whatever that want to, it’s their life. $950,000 this season isn’t bad money. When players attend college they aren’t making money they are getting a $235,000 college degree pay for over a 4 year period. That doesn’t come out of his pocket but later it will. And he will always be a talented basketball player at least til 30 years old.

Very few go back and get their degree. The % is so small. Most of these kids don't want to be in school in the first place. For some it works out fine. For others not so much. 950k is a lot of dough for most of the world but toss in taxes, agents commissions, baby mama's house, that sweet porsche with 20's, paying for your "homies" back home, etc ,etc..... And soon enough you are broke.

NBA career vs a college degree? It looks like Jabari Bird was at Cal Berkeley for 4 years. That was enough time to get a degree or close to a degree. We have a ton of kids playing AAU basketball and they usually dream of being the one and done. What is our true percentage of Northern California players with NBA careers? I do believe our boys are getting college scholarships. I would hope a degree is a reason to go to college.

2017 NBA Draft
Ivan Rabb #35th pick
Jabari Bird #56 pick

Bird is 22 years old. He lost 3 years of earning potential of a career that more likely than not will end before 30 (NBA or overseas. Average NBA career is 5 years.). Those two years of league minimum is over 7 figures of income.

Playing for free makes no sense in 2018. If you are a NBA player they will find you.

@da real this is a very true statement for most NBA players without degrees [end up broke] after earning hundreds of thousands and millions...

Larry Legend is telling on himself with those comments directed towards Ivan Rabb... SMH... take your (barely) veiled racism somewhere else... once a clown always a clown...

I don’t think those comments were aimed at Ivan. Just that many, many NBA players (professional athletes in general, but a larger percentage in the NBA) tend to blow their money, despite what seems like huge contracts.

Telling on himself? Telling the truth more like it. Wake up and smell the coffee. Love how you bring the race card into it. Talking about revealing yourself.

If you guys are cool with comments like this referring to Ivan Rabb and Jordan Brown (SPECIFICALLY in this case, since they are who this thread is about) then that's on you....

Those comments are made because those are the ones publicized. It really does not happen all that often but when it does, you will surely hear about it. You rarely hear of the good stories of pro athletes giving back to the Community like Dame does all year around. Or the foundations started like Fam 1st by Lynch, Peters, Johnson etc... there are many players that make it in sports , have great lives and also provide opportunities for others.
Not all players live above their means and blow their money. As people , we should really not make statements that hold no facts. Ivan is a great kid and student with a great family! His mom Tami is one of the best! You really do not know how many people are in these athletes ear trying to guide and steer them in one direction or another.

Nice showing by brown . Brown racked up 26 points on 13-of-19 shooting, adding eight rebounds .
My nephew got the MVP . man how time flies .

Seemed very clear that he was referring to the general situation not rabb or brown. And he’s right it’s not a ton of money when you throw in taxes agents and hanger on types. Players have a very short window to make their money.

Stereotyping athletes based on what is portrayed by the media instead of factual statistics, Yes. But I didn't think it was a racist comment. And didn't think it was directed specifically at Brown and Rabb.

We don’t always have to be so sensitive. Also someone above pointed out the good thing “Great Pro Athletes” do like Dame and Marshawn; those guys are not just Professionals they are Superstars, Allstars and All Pros. No one is talking directly about Rabb and Brown however both these guys could use a college education at a early age. Congratulations to Brown today we are all proud of his success. It’s a shame that for every successful minute on the basketball court between the ages of 11 - 17 that we don’t always encourage our athletes to have a scholar mentality.

Back to Brown,
I thought he displayed a nice touch around the rim, showed a good court IQ, handled the ball well in the open court, displayed good footwork and pick and roll instincts.
On the other hand I was hoping he would of added more bulk and improved athleticism....on more then 1 occasion he had open rim to slam it and instead Layed it up. Doesn’t always have the presence protecting the rim and on the glass you would want from your big, I don’t see him as a one and done.....
