Where will these games be played at Campolindo or Miramonte?

Miramonte beat Heritage 55-47
Carondelet beat McClatchy 63-57
Pinewood beat St. Joseph 64-36
Bear Creek beat Campolindo 80-49
South SF beat Brookside Christian 56-42
Terra Nova beat Clayton Valley Charter 66-60

SJND was missing two starters, point guard and post, due to injury.

The outcome probably would have been the same, but the margin certainly wouldn't have.

Carondelet outlasted McClatchy in the best game I saw, pulling away in the fourth quarter.

Miramonte was up 20 in the fourth quarter and Heritage finished, I believe, on a 14-2 run.

Mya Blake was very impressive for Bear Creek, but it's hard to tell how good they are. Of the top 25 Division I teams in the state, according to the MaxPreps computer, Bear Creek has the second weakest schedule so far. (Edison, which lost by 43 at home the first time around, looks like the toughest opponent before postseason.)

Great event by the Campo folks ...

Pinewood is a great team to watch, St Joe’s missing 2 starters but very impressive core of young players, future looks very bright for the Pilots.
The Frosh PG Blake from Bear Creek is very composed and skilled, definitely one of the top performers of the day. Carondelet and Miramonte starting to get things going on all cylinders heading down the stretch. Congrats to Campo Coach for putting on good day of hoops, very unfortunate to see his team struggle with the run of bad luck they have endured.

with respect, MM came out with all cylinders firing (i.e. hitting unsustainable rate of 3's) and led 23-10 at the end of 1Q (19-3 at one point). after that, Heritage ground that margin down. anther hot streak created the 20-point margin early in 4Q, but as Clay mentioned, it was Heritage that finished strong. it's a mistake to judge MM when it has the 3-ball going, the bigger picture is less impressive. the game was actually more closely contested than the final margin might suggest. MM remains vulnerable to a team with a strong game in the block. widely spread trapping defense makes them vulnerable to post entry if they can't induce panic on the perimeter.

Clay, so after seeing these teams Saturday, do you think any of these teams are placed in the Open division? The way the year has played out so far, I believe 6 teams have really locked themselves as Open worthy (Mitty, St Marys, Pinewood, Carondelet, Salesian and Folsom). Who will be the last 2, basically sacrificial lambs for the big 2. Looks like Miramonte and Bear Creek had good showings, SJND and McClatchy both lost to Open teams, what do you think of them Clay? Only other options might be Cardinal Newman, BOD.

The consensus right now, I think, is that the Open is:

Mitty and Pinewood from CCS
SMS and Folsom from SJS
The four Division winners in NCS

So if Heritage beats Carondelet, say, and BOD beats Miramonte, Heritage and BOD would be Open, and Carondelet and Miramonte would be D1.

There will be upsets, though, so this scenario is unlikely to play out perfectly. For example, what if McClatchy beats Folsom in the SJS D1 playoffs? Or Cardinal Newman beats Salesian in NCS D3?

On top of all that, there's a new committee chairman for the NorCal Basketball committee, so who knows what impact that will have ...

Clay, do you think Eastside possibly gets moved up? Would need a team like Miramonte/Cardinal Newman also in.

So sounds like this is the possible list of 8 open teams at this point:

1.Mitty
2.SMS
3.Pinewood
4.Folsom
_________________________________________

5.NCS D1 winner-Carondelet most likely
6.NCS D2 winner-BOD/MM
7.NCS D3 winner-Salesian/CN
8.NCS D4 winner-possibly SJND

bubble teams-
McClatchy if upsets Folsom in SJS D1
loser of NCS D3 game
Or we have no idea because there is a new committee chair for NorCal basketball and they could mess things up royally. LOL.
Or does anyone care because a Mitty/SMS rematch is what everyone wants to see.

St. Joseph of alameda beat Carondelet. So I think they need consideration along with or before Carondelet whose pattern each year in the playoffs recently has been to be eliminated in the first game. Perhaps St. Joseph would be a better playoff performing team than say Carondelet, a team who has loss the first game each season? Not to mention we have about 10-12 more games before the post season. Some of the teams riding on the bubble might pull off an upset of one of the 6 so call sure shots being mentioned at this point. That might expose a thing or two about a few teams that might make it all interesting down the stretch.

I think it is fun to make predictions. But we all know things don't always turn out as predicted. Except for the New England Patriots. Of course in some cases patterns develop that become a bit more predictable than others. Personally I think the race could turn out a bit closer than many expect. I don't see a team even Mitty and SMS the favorites, who I think can just show up and automatically advance past the so call top 6 teams. So this should be a fantastic finish IMO.

Who knows, if Carondelet is placed in the Open, maybe they can just "Win Anyway"?

win anyway... hahaha

no favorites?? hahaha do you even know what favorite means in sports??

Clay commented about St Joseph, if they win D4 NCS, then sounds like chance they could get placed in Open from their overall body of work this season. In my opinion, Carondelet is definitely open team and I wouldn't think they would get left out of Open because of their pattern of post season losses in the past. Yes, they lost to SJND early in the season by 1 point, but after playing Mitty pretty tough last week and playing well beating McClatchy, I don't think you can take them lightly this year. They have good speed and ball handling, very good shooting, and good size- Bamberger inside is looking very dominant lately and put up 25 and 15 against McClatchy. They could surprise you Paytc this year and they could make a nice run. I even think they could give St Mary's a tough game. I'm sure Mitty would rather they be on other side of bracket.

Exactly ! That should always be the goal for every team. I wouldn't ever just count them out. Because just like lotto "you gotta be in it to win it" :):):)

I agreed with everything you said except "I'm sure Mitty would rather they be on other side of bracket" I'm sure Mitty would prefer Pinewood, SMS, and Salesian to be on the other side of the bracket. And have Folsom, Carondelet, and Miramonte or St. Joesph of alameda on their side of the bracket.

And odds given enough shots (no pun intended but that too true) start running in your favor sooner or later. Each game, season, and circumstance is different. Carondelet is never just a cakewalk for anyone. They're not that far off. Given the right situation(s) they'll figure it out.

I think MM will be in the Open. I find it curious that a one-point margin should be taken as gospel of one team's superiority over another. Hey, that's a tie game! the only thing it suggests is that if the two played 10 times, each would win 5. if you can't find a significant difference between the two teams' bodies of work, it works as a tie-breaker (a tie breaking a tie?)

I've seen Clet play MM and McClatchy, and I'm impressed. my comments on MM aren't meant to disparage the team, only to suggest that they have flaws. that's news, huh, a flawed high school team!! if they win NCS DII, they're in. if they open on the road (likely), it's quite possibly one-and-done.

Thanks to all of the coaches, media and fans for coming. We had some good teams and matchups, which made for some good basketball. I really value the friends I have met through coaching basketball and enjoy seeing you all. Thanks for supporting girls basketball, the coaches and most important the kids.
