League Championship Doubleheader @ Redwood

Friday night find me on Valentine’s Day with the love of my life, HS Hoops!

This is the Marin County Athletic League’s championship...

First game is the girls, host Redwood vs. San Marin of Novato.

I know zero about either of these teams... I don’t think I’ve seen San Marin, boys or girls, any year.

Knowing bupkis about either team here except a few minutes’ look in MaxPreps, I’ll likely be doing tiny updates, like maybe every quarter.

I’ll get a lil more involved in the Branson v. Marin Catholic boys’ game which follows...

Anyway, fwiw, Redwood’s girls have beaten San Marin fairly handily in their two meeting... and I notice San Marin is sorely lacking in the tallness department... Centers are 5-7 and 5-8.

Only thing I ever remember about San Marin was my sophomore year at SH San Fran. We had a preseason road game there, traveled thru a unreal storm. Arrived at the gym, headed to the locker room and the whole place went dark. 15mins later we traveled all the way back thru a storm to SF. And we never played the game

Yeah Redwood has a cool gym. I’ve been to the MCAL championship doubleheader there before. Enjoy.

Redwood women always has a good squad with their coach Diane Peterson she does a great OV year in and year out. Mc has a chance if their sharp shooting guards play lights out and their 6’7 big man has really improved by vast amounts as the season has progressed, but I think Branson turns up the defense and wins

I understand this was supposed to be sort of a rebuilding year for Branson, but they don’t rebuild... They reload! 25-2, only gave up 60 in a game twice... Once was in the loss to Marin Catholic, the other was as they beat Redwood recently 69-60.

Earlier in the season, however, Branson rolled MC by 29. So ya never know...

Branson with an inside score.. 3-2.

Short J for Branson... 4-3.

Branson drive and score... 6-3, and a swat on the other end, followed by another inside score. 8-3.

Nice cut and pass/score by MC... 8-5.

Wow, some great high-level up and down action here... Branson fouled on a shot, finally... FT’s split. 9-5.

Nice move for a MC score... 9-7.

Terrific drive by Branson’s big for a score... 11-7.

Nice move again by MC’s #11 to get a short J... 11-9.

42.8 left in the quarter. Terrific pass by Branson’s big to set up a score... 13-9. And Branson steals, work it around... Shot missed, off. Board, quick pass to get off a 3 at the buzzer... BAM! 16-9 Branson after 1.

Pretty bank shot by Branson... 21-9. MC need to get er going. Getting fouled on a 3 might help... MC at line for 3.

FT’s 2 for 3. 21-11.

GREAT pass sets up a Branson layup, then they steal... but can’t capitalize. 23-11.

Branson steal... Blown dunk... but MC fouls on the rebound.Nice baseline inbounds for 2... 25-11.

Much-needed 3 for MC! But they cannot figure out how to keep Branson from getting layups... 27-14

Man, oh man... Branson can D up! Only answer is the 3-ball, which MC gets. 27-17.

ANOTHER 3 by MC! 27-20... Time out Bulls! 1:30 left in the half.

MC #11 drives... shoots, whistle... and it goes! 27-22, FT coming. Good. 27-23. MC swats a guy! Steals! Last second try is nowhere close... 27-23 Branson at the half.

Was looking like Branson might put this one away early, but MC had other plans... Heck of a game going on here!

MC fouled to start 2nd half after a Keystone Kops Special of a play... FT’s go. 27-25.

Branson #31 with nice floater. 29-25, but MC answers inside. 29-27.

Wing 3 by Malarkey of Branson (Hey!, I heard one!). 32-27.

MC scores inside... 32-29.

MC seems to get it inside better so far this half.

Malarkey drives, fouled... FT’s split. 33-29.

#21 of MC nails a 3! 33-32.

#31 of Branson fouled, clooossssse charge/block call... sinks 2. 35-32.

Putback 2 for MC... 35-34 Bulls.

Branson for 3! 38-34, 2:15 left 3rd...

Nice crossover to set up a J for MC... 41-36, but Branson nails another corner 3! 44-36...

Aaaaaaandddddd.... That’s the end of the quarter. MC may need a miracle here.

Shots just not falling right now for MC... That needs to change pretty quick.

Branson steal and layup... Time out MC! 46-36, 6:01 left... These guys are scary good on D! Funny thing, their basic offense looks a lot like CVC’s dribble handoff, dribble drive deal... But they run it much better and play Super-Glue defense.

Finally, MC beats ‘em on a back-cut... but the layup rolls out. Branson starting to bleed out the clock. Hack-n-hope time... 3:16 left, Branson by 11.

They have a few fouls to use before bonus... ho-hum... But suddenly they stop tho they aren’t up to 7 fouls... wtf?

So Branson scores again... 49-36.

MC fouled, FT’s bricked... Branson rebound and runout, but fouled... next is bonus.

More Hack-n-hope... FT’s good... and the rout is now clearly on.

With this win tonight, Branson should be the 6th and final team in the Open Division. I understand De La Salle and Granada are the teams everyone will want, but Branson avenged their loss.

Great run for Branson again this year with more to come. I don't think it is an Open team, but they are going to be a tough out in NCS and NorCals.

Kiddman...what do you think? You have seen all the big boys from across the Bay and now you’ve seen Branson at pretty much their best against the only other quality team in MCAL. Do they deserve Open and can they hang?

Yup, I do. Very dangerous team indeed... Fast, super-disciplined, locked-in on the defensive side... Not sure how much they can do offensively vs. top opposition, but they'd be a tough out for anybody.
