McClymond's record

What's happened to the McClymond's basketball? They were pretty good a few years ago and they literally fell off a cliff. The OAL as a whole seems to have gotten a lot weaker? Seems like Oakland Tech is the only team above .500 at this point in the season.

They brought in outside coaches,, before all the coaches were Mack Alum,, Even since coach Brooks left,, The had some of his players from when he coach playafter he left but since then down hill. The Mack alums took pride and it was a tradition of winning.. Let hope they can bring it back in the future.

West Oakland is not what it once was. Not sure this is a bad thing either. Crime is down, employment is up, home prices have skyrocketed, etc. Gentrification in that area is pushing people out to Antioch, Pittsburgh, Baypoint, and Stockton. This will only increase in the coming years. You can kiss the glory days of Oak City School dominance away. Times have changed. East Oakland not so much. Still a war zone down their and near Coliseum.

Just hit the nail on the head Larry. It used to be that O'dowd, ST. Joes could take a bunch of guys and Berkeley and the OAL still had a slew of guys left over that were straight ballers. 7th guys in the OAL could have been all-leaguers in the AAA even in the 2000's. That's not the case anymore. The amount of talented players in Oakland has just dropped off. I hear the case about the Mack alum and pride for the school but if an outside coach had the Will Cherry, Frank Otis and company team I'm pretty sure they would do just fine too!

Gentrification is never good, who thinks like that? Sad to read a person on the West Coast publicly write that . Smh

While you are right and the effects are deeper than people just up and moving eastward, you have to consider the source of the comment. Best to leave it be.

Tell that to people that own property in Oakland. Gentrification is a positive thing for a lot of communities. It does not involve removing a race of people at all. That is a misnomer if that was your reference and it often gives the word a negative connotation. It means that people of higher means move into a lower income area and begin to populate with people of more income and means. Now what has occurred in Oakland is a lot of people that bought their homes for 250 are selling them for 650 and heading out to cheaper areas so they can have no mortgage and some cash in their pocket. That is good for everyone is it not? Now renters often times get pushed out which is a negative.....but I think the pros outweigh the cons. Oakland is an extremely beautiful city with an amazing culture, history and climate. Wouldn't it be good for it to be safer? Wouldn't it be good for people to have grocery stores there? Malls there? instead of retailers who see it as a problem area see it as an area for growth. Just look at how nice downtown is becoming. 20 years from now watch Oakland become one of the most desirable cities to live in this country. I know there are other sides of this but for someone to say that it is NEVER a good thing is just not accurate.

GENTRIFICATION IS NEVER A GOOD THING...PERIOD! Its my opinion but please do not reply to me with your definition as if your speaking to a person who does not understand what it is. Go ask the people who were pushed out of Oakland if its a good thing. But its your opinion , your entitled to it but your facts and understanding of it is off.

I work 3 miles from Mack HS. Talk to me about gentrification. Don't tell me what you think you know. Its a word that was created by the left wing and has a negative slur to it. There are good and bad things with this movement. Talk to me about the people who live in Folsom, EDH, Granite Bay and sold there 900 sq foot home in crappy parts of SJ for 1.4M and bought a mansion and are getting there kids into better schools. That has happened. And is that a bad thing? Younger families are moving into Oakland. People in the tech industry who are paying high property taxes to help build back infrastructure. Is that a bad thing? Folks who want good schools are are involved. Tell me the teachers think that isn't good...

The question was raised about Mack hoops which I've followed closely since the 80's. Times changed. It happened in the AAA across the bay. And is SF as a city worse for it? Ha... Arguably the greatest city in the world. Would love to see a will cherry or frank otis back. Those teams were awesome. I just don't see it happening....

What is Mack's current enrollment?

I've read around 600 but that might be a couple years old. It sounds like the # continues to slide.... They play D4 for football so they have to be in that range.

If that' the reason why have they won state in football 2 years in a row? Wouldn't football suffer as well?

Football is a lot more watered down. I’m sure the basketball team will fare batter once they start playing OAL league opponents on a regular basis.

Football has been a bright spot. But they've had to go down to a very low level. D4. They need a couple decent teams on the schedule to get a real feel of how good they are. I mean was Vanden there best win?

Mack has 200 studens in 4 grades? No frickn way. They would have shut the school down.

Tried to find a recent School Accountability Report and didn't see anything. Something I saw via Google said 275 Students as of 2012-2013 or so........

That's crazy if true. The SFUSD has closed schools that had more students than that.

I don't claim to be an expert on McClymonds by any means. From Knowing coach Mo and other Alumni, I have always gotten the understanding that there was, and is, great pride being from Mac.
This has gone a long way in supporting the school, as another poster said in an earlier post.
And yes, the school has had a very small enrollment for several years.
Would love to see the OAL make a comeback. Gridley is just not the same without one of their teams.

Here's wishing you great hoops
