Mercury News Article on the NCS & CCS Play Off Bracket Issues

Yah when you see the Scores from some of the 1 seeds last night, you wonder why even play the game? Why not have all 1 seeds get a bye...heck I think top 4 should get a bye.

Also I think an Open Division in NCS would be a great idea. Lots of good teams, and for example a team like Salesian's might actually get some tough competition, as opposed to crusing through the D3 division, winning every game by 15+ points.

Why is less teams not the answer?
Because less teams is fewer games.

And to make $ure we're clear, le$$ game$ mean$ le$$ money. A$ the article $ay$, each CC$ bracket ha$ 4 fewer game$. With 6 bracket$ for both boy$ and girl$, that'$ 48 fewer game$. At $10 per ticket and, let'$ $ay 200 people in attendance for each game (probably con$ervative), that'$ ju$t $hy of $100,000 that goe$ to the NC$. What do you think Lemmon et. al. care more about, mi$matche$ or $100,000?

Actually the Mercury News article is incorrect in stating that there are 4 fewer games. If you check out these 2 brackets (NCS Div 2 and CCS Div 4) you will notice that there are a total of 15 games in each bracket.... so no money lost here.

Also, another point to consider, is if NCS goes to an Open Division, many more people will probably attend these epic games, and thus potentially increasing the revenue for NCS.

Seriously, how many people paid money and spent time watching Salesian blow out a 16 seed?

NCS Open Division? Hmmm; let simulate how this would work. Let’s take the top 8 teams in the entire NCS and let them play a mini tournament. At the end one team will win and for sure more onto the Nor Cal open.

Now what happens to the other 7 teams after this open competition?

Do they move up to Nor Cal?

In what division will they play in?

Any other things to consider?

I’m sure top two maybe 3 will move onto NorCal open. The rest will fill in NorCal playoffs to their respective divisions. I’m sure. That’s how CCS works.

With the whole Competitive Equity movement, I would think all the hypothetical NCS Open teams that don’t make the NorCal Open field would slot right into D1, making the D1 bracket a monster gauntlet as well.

The D4 games at Hartnell will be interesting. Hartnell is like a home game for Palma and they will probably practice there I would imagine. It is a nice facilities, but if you haven't played there can be tough on shooting. There is quite a bit of space outside of the baskets and higher ceilings. It kind of messes with your depth perception a little. A little different than the typical HS gym and takes a little time to get used to. Rims are very tight as well. Typical college gym. Laurel Inn is the best motel to stay in Salinas or stay on Monterey although weekend rates are much higher.

Half Moon Bay v Palma - Palma will have had a couple games under its belt and HMB has sat. Palma shooting can be very inconsistent but plays very good defense. They are more like a 3-5 seed in this division and if they are playing good defense and are on a good shooting night could upset HMB. HMB will be big favorite, but could be close. HMB +6

Santa Cruz v Kings Academy - Santa Cruz will be favorite. +8 in my opinion (Palma defeated SC by 1 earlier in year)

Harker v Carmel - Harker is a little better than Carmel. Probably Harker +5

Jefferson v Sacred Heart Prep - Jefferson probably a slight edge as favorite. +3 but could go either way.

My predicted for CCS D4 finals are:

HBM/Palma winner v Santa Cruz - Santa Cruz looks like the best team in their bracket and HMB in theirs.

200 x 48 is not $96,000, noknight. It's $9,600.

That's a far cry from $100,000 and the money does NOT go to the section.

Oh.

In CCS Open, they have consolation rounds for first-round looo... ERRR non-winners. Those games help determine what NorCal divisions the teams might go to... I think.

Haven't looked, but I believe they do similar for Southern Section and maybe LA.

What *really* needs to be done is to re-organize all the sections so that each has about the same number of schools... In the Southern Section's case, they could just split that section into three new sections... Or maybe split Southern and LA into four... Well, that would still leave SoCal with more schools in the playoffs... Not sure how we'd ever get around that; they have four or five times as as many schools as we do. Hmmm...

What it comes down to is: With a state this huge with 15-20,000 schools ranging in enrollment size from a few dozen to 4000 or so, as far apart as 900 miles, there *is* no truly fair way to organize it.

So, let's just play the games already! :)

All CCS teams in the OPEN Division get into the NorCal Playoffs.

Previous to this season, the teams would enter NorCals in their Enrollment Division.
The Champion and the runner-up would sometimes both be in the NorCal OPEN Division. This was the only change in Division for NorCals.

This season the games played by the CCS teams in the OPEN Division will help determine what Division that team will be in for NorCals.
Most of the teams will be in Division 1 or Division 2 NorCal Brackets. Bellarmine will probably be in the OPEN Division for NorCals, if the Bells win the OPEN Division.
Archbishop Mitty might be in the Division 3 NorCal Bracket, depending on how many games the Monarchs win in the OPEN Division. Mitty could play themselves into Division 2 for NorCals, if they win 2 or more games in the OPEN Division.

Oops, but it is not $10 a person. In fact, it's only a couple bucks for students. Yeah, I rushed and was wrong, but the amount per school is tiny. They have to pay for custodians overtime and they have to pay for referees. The profit is tiny, if any. In fact, CCS has said the reason they only use two refs for most games is the cost factor.

The $10 was the price quoted in the article at the top of the thread. And I agree the money the schools make is tiny - probably almost exclusively snack bar sales. But NCS and CCS wouldn't be inviting more teams if they weren't making money from it. Of that I am confident.

Absolutely incorrect. Sorry, but the reason for the large number of teams is 100% related to the schools wanting to be in postseason play. Otherwise, they would be in regardless of record. They are NOT making money on the vast majority of games.

You're late to the party. Regardless, there is virtually no profit after game expenses are paid. Custodial, referees, game clock and scoreboard, etc.

If Mitty goes D3 for Norcals they are my fav to win it without seeing the brackets
