Earlier today I was informed that our basketball team would no longer be allowed to compete in the CIF State playoffs due to a case of Coronavirus at the school.
The coaches are saddened and the players are truly devastated by this outcome, especially the seniors on the team. As the #1 seed in D1 the road to state was supposed to go through Riordan at the Crusader Forum. Now, De La Salle will advance to the NorCal final to face Campolindo, a team we beat earlier this year by 14 points on a neutral court.
The amount of work and commitment everyone involved with the basketball program put in this year is tremendous and impossible to quantify. As coaches we sacrifice time with our families, careers and overall lives to coach and mentor these young men. We try our best to teach them not only basketball lessons but life lessons as well. I’d like to shout out my Crusader brothers who I ask so much of as assistant coaches and they always deliver.
Andrew Colville, John Tofi, Will Watkins, Jordan Davis. Your contributions to your alma mater and to the basketball program do not go unnoticed. Thank you. The work ethic of these student-athletes is truly special. The unseen hours in the gym and weight room are what makes the gamedays special. This group helped fulfill my ultimate goal when I was hired as head coach 3 years ago; to bring Riordan Basketball back. Back to the top of the WCAL, Bay Area, Northern California and to be mentioned with the best of the best in the state of California. I’m proud to say we were in that conversation from beginning to end.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to address our alumni, especially ones on here and other social media platforms. Riordan alums need to support a way of positivity and decency. Reject the negative and cynical thoughts/comments. No other high school alums behave in such a manner on their school’s social media platforms. We are better than that and need show the “brotherhood” we claim to espouse. Those of you that have supported this year and beyond we truly appreciate you. Our boys love the crowds at home games and the “old timers” singing the alma mater with them after a big win. This season was a tremendous success in more ways than one.
We will be back.
