NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR

Just like the national championship the loss to salesian prevents PW or their coach from getting any national award.

one of the dangers in giving a national award out BEFORE the season ends...lol

Congrats to Doc Scheppler..

What a run!!!

What a coaching job!!

Can PW pull off the OPEN trifecta and win next weeks game?

If they do all coach of the yr honors should be rescinded and given to Doc

there's no doubt in my mind they can and will win. I watched WW and BOD play and while it was a good game, I thought BOD should have won. But that's why they play the game. Bring home the hardware PW!

That is what next season is for. A chance to build from the season prior. My pre-season pick for next years #1 team in the nation will be Pinewood. Of course they need to 1st win this season's Open State championship against a tough Windward team. Next they need to be seeded high (hopefully top 5) coming out the gate next preseason. Then take the trip to Arizona and win the Nike TOC top level Championship. And then run the table as the repeat California Open division state Champions.

One step at a time. First up Windward in the Open State championship.

All the best to Pinewood !

Oh and by the way...... My poll is the official SOS poll. So I may have Pinewood in the top spot as the #1 team in the nation at year end, as I did Clovis West last season. IMO strength of schedule and how you end the season is far more important than the number of losses or even what team(s) you may have for one reason or another had a EARLY SEASON hiccup against.

Not going to the TOC in Arizona hurts Pinewood by far more than losing an early season close game to a more than worthy Salesian team does.

Not a team in the country can claim what PW has done. Crown their a$$!

I have to disagree. At the Nike TOC, Mitty beat the top 3 teams in the country on consecutive days, which may be the most impressive feat accomplished by any prep team this season, boys included. St. Mary's and many others in the top 25 can lay claim to the similar feats as well, but none as impressive as what Mitty did in December.

What PW has done this past week is impressive, Mitty played an extremely tough non-league schedule, a tough league and post season schedule. To come out of that with 1 loss is truly impressive!

Coach Phillips earned whatever accolades she has received thus far, and whatever other awards she may be in line for in the future. Doc has done an incredible job as well.

What a season for NorCal girls basketball. There was a lot of excellent basketball played culminated with a triple overtime thriller and instant classic between the 2 best teams in Northern California! Go Pinewood!

This is not criticism of Doc Scheppler, as I feel the same way: He's told me once he doesn't really like to travel that much, and because of that, it limits his team's opportunity to be highly ranked.

Take Centennial of Nevada: They went to Hawaii, to the Nike TOC, to Stockton and to L.A. And they played as a club team and traveled all summer. That kind of schedule allowed them to be a top ten team ...

I'm pretty sure Doc doesn't want to do all that, though maybe he feels differently now -- I know I wouldn't -- and without that elite schedule, given the strength of his league and the fact that NorCal will be down a little next year, will make it hard for Pinewood to be a preseason No. 1.

But if Pinewood goes for the top bracket at the Nike TOC, plays a team like Southridge in Stockton, and gets some of the best SoCal teams on the schedule, then maybe ...

I'm not sure what the travel adds except a "national" schedule the can help national rankings. if that's not your aim, you can stay pretty close to home and still help your kids do great things on the court. of course, I'm a stay-at-home guy myself, which is hardly an endorsement.

That's a key point: If coaches/teams/schools don't care about national rankings -- and there aren't really a lot of reasons to care that much -- then don't bother.

But, on the other hand, complaining about the lack of national recognition after not traveling is another story. If teams are allowed to travel by their states, and can afford to, then if they want a national ranking, they have to get out on the road and earn it.

if they want a national ranking, they have to get out on the road and earn it.

yeah, but who's lobbying for ranking, the teams, or their partisans in this message board universe? sitting at a computer screen isn't exactly being out on the road.
