I sit here writing this, about as mad and sick as I have ever been before.

Today the NCS decided to exclude my alma mater, Stuart Hall, from the D4 Bracket. On a technicality.

The defending state Champions, who played a challenging schedule this year, got shafted. There is no other way to put it.

When a team that is 5-20, and 0-13 in league makes it over you. And a 4 seed is 12-16 and 7-9 in league.

Am I saying another team should have been left out instead? No. But why not have us face Ygnacio Valley instead of giving a 3 seed a bye?

Good luck to everyones teams this year.

St. Joseph's was .500 versus D4(1-1), which is the 3rd qualifying criteria. In looking at Stuart Hall's schedule, they appear to be above .500 versus D4 as well, unless Priory is D4(but rankings show D5). What was the technicality? Did they not submit the paperwork properly?

I see the Hall also at or above .500 in D4 also... So they should have qualified unless there was some other snafu.

Apparently our wins against HMB arent D4 wins.

It’s BS. It’s not fair. But sometimes life isn’t fair.

Also the rule of league champs get home preference is dumb when you have a 1 seed traveling to a 16 seed. I get the rule but seems like you can work around it

Still not clear on what technicality Stuart Hall got “disqualified” for? Please clarify….

All those Riordan years I don’t recall the Doctor stating wins based on division. I know strength of schedule and common opponents who played teams you did as well was a factor.

This is straight from the NCS playoff guide in their website:

MINIMUM QUALIFYING RECORD 16.304H Minimum Qualifying Record
To be accepted as a participant in the NCS Boys and Girls Basketball Championships, a team shall have compiled a .500 overall record, or a .500 record against teams in its own division or a .500 record in its own league. Exception: league champions gain automatic entry, provided the team submits and application by the deadline.
a. A .500 record is defined as a team having at least an equal number of wins and losses.
b. “Teams in its own division” is defined as any team that falls within the NCS/CIF Basketball Division. NCS/CIF Basketball Divisions are listed on the NCS website. Note: In basketball, NCS staff will honor the most recently used enrollment breaks (prior to competitive equity) to determine where a non-NCS school
would be placed.
a. Games against teams outside of the United States will not be counted in determining the “winning
record within a division”.
d. League record is defined as only league games played during the league season excluding league playoffs. (Board of Managers 5/1/06)

The two wins over Half Moon Bay are considered Division 3 wins. HMB's enrollment is 1009, which falls in the NCS' classification for Division 3.

Teams from outside the NCS are labeled based off of enrollments.

Schools with 900-1349 students are Division 3. Schools with 420-899 students are Division 4.

I think it's strange, but it's easily found on the NCS website. The question is when this information became available.

so, they considered a team that's D4 in CCS a D3 team in NCS, even though that's not their section...

Umm, yeah. Right.

Sometimes, common sense needs to prevail, but it didn't here.

HMB Is not a D4 team. They played in the CCS playoffs last year as D3. D3 again this year.

Let’s be honest though, if you are under .500 in league and overall, maybe that is a sign that it wasn’t your year. Move on. That is the actual problem. NCS and likely everyone wants kids to feel like winners, like they had success…like they had a chance. That is not life. Getting cut, not getting into a college you wanted, losing more than you win is just as much a part of life and maybe more than winning. The lesson here is just be better. Just be mediocre in fact. Come back next year and try again.

I totally get that, but that doesn't explain why a 5-20 team got in and Stuart Hall, who had a much less awful year, did not.

Look it wasn’t our best year. But we played those games against HMB thinking they were D4. SJND instead of rescheduling a game against us (our gym had flooding), they didn’t play the game.

I don’t think SJND shouldn’t be in. They should. They qualified according to the rules.

But leaving the Hall out over a technicality, is flat out unacceptable and leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

There is no appeals process. No chance to right this wrong. Imagine making NCS every year since 2004 (thought 2008 but we played Lick in NCS that year), and then getting left out over a technicality. Oh yeah and we were defending D5 State champions.

I think out of sections games do not count for or against your NCS section record.

For me this topic ends today. Nothing further can be done.

I wish all the teams that qualified for NCS the best. Good luck
