Not sure if it's the same in other sections, but Northern Section has switched to all home sites this year, to help manage crowd sizes.

Campo won the NorCal title game in 2020 at DLS, and I'd say the gym at Campo is slightly larger than that one... They also hosted the NorCal title game vs. Serra in 2019, so precedent has already been set that the home gyms are large enough in almost all cases.

An exception would be some big team with a *really* tiny gym like Salesian, which used Albany's spacious gym in playoffs.

Sad but true, here in NorCal games just don't draw that many fans anymore.

In many states, and even SoCal, big games can draw huge numbers, even fill up college arenas... But not here unless a Jason Kidd type happens to be around...

I don’t mind the home gym site. I was at that campo /Serra game in 2019 and it was tremendous. Campo has a big hs gym to be honest. Fill it up baby!
This isn’t 1990-92 with kidd filling the coliseum. No streaming, internet, etc.z

Doen anyone know why the regular venue st.mary's college is not being used for the NCS final? In my Opinion no NCS final should be played on anybody's home floor when you are more then Likely talking about 2 league champions meeting up.

probably covid and st marys doesnt want to deal with it. but the mask mandate is ending next week so maybe. i just think the bigger floor, the brighter lights are made for championship games. even contra costa college gym would be a good spot. their gym is really nice

re: St. Mary's... They haven't held NCS games there since 2018, so Covid's not a factor.

Seems to me that CIF and/or NCS just decided the big venue wasn't needed.

But I do agree that they should play section finals at neutral sites. Sometimes arranging those sites on short notice is difficult, but considering how well schools have done during Covid in scrambling to get games played, maybe this could get done.

the first open game was there in 2020 between dublin and odowd. there was not a playoff last year. the big venue is a good thing. the dublin odowd and the girls game were full

I think it has to do with COVID practices are already set in place with administrators who have done it before. That was the reason I saw for HS sites for football.

Where’s SRV from EBAL on this list? They beat Granada twice and DV. Young team, but very underestimated.

Dougherty Valley won’t be in The Open. Their 2nd best player Connor Sevilla has been out with a leg injury, and without him DV lost to Foothill over the weekend and Granada tonight in the EBAL playoffs. Sevilla scored 32 against Granada in their first meeting, which DV won in OT. Hopefully he’ll be back for NCS, but they’re just not the same team without him.

I remember reading something in the NCS meeting agendas that championship games at home sites would be used this year as a cost saving measure for NCS

Newark Memorial or James Logan High have huge gyms to host a Final. Gives back to a member NCS school and saves money.

It used to be that Logan hosted a lot of playoffs in several sports. Unfortunately, not recently, to my knowledge.

Cal State East Bay (aka Hayward) used to have the NCS tourney every year... I miss those days...

Like many on here, I'd love to see multi-game playoff showcases, three or four games like in the old days... But I doubt they're gonna budge on this one.

Even at the top level, if the arena wasn't offered up for free (or close to it, I dunno what the current deal is at Golden1), they'd probably do the same to us for state finals. Now *THAT* would be a sad state of affairs.

Campo, DLS & SPSV all punched their Open tickets with big wins tonight. The remaining 3 seats at the Open table will be chosen by the committee tomorrow.

What about Oracle? It’s just sitting there empty. Just open up the bottom bowl.

who you got for the last 3? dublin, moreau, liberty, granada, salesian? Can they just make it a 4 team tournament?

For D4 Im prediction the following:

1) Marin Catholic vs. 16) SJND
2) Arcata vs. 15) Fortuna
3) University vs. 14) Kelseyville
4) Justin-Siena vs. 13) Healdsburg
5) Middletown vs. 12) Eureka
6) Del Norte vs. 11) Fort Bragg
7) Mckinleyville vs. 10) Stuart Hall
8) Saint Mary's vs. 9) Lick-Wilmerding

I would say offhand that Granada is a good bit more likely than Dublin since they made tonight's league final.

Both Northgate and Miramonte could find their way into Open... Probably just one of 'em because I doubt they'd want three from one league. Couldn't tell ya which one would get favored.

Moreau, Liberty, and Salesian have similar resumes... League champs or tourney finalists but not really any signature wins and some bad losses. I'd say of these three, Salesian is low man on the totem pole. After all, their overall record is 9-8.

Hmm, a 4-team tournament is not a bad idea for this year... The three "locked-in" teams plus whichever they think is best of the rest.

My final guess:

1) Campo
2) DLS
3) Miramonte
4) SPSV
5) Moreau
6) Granada
After doing some digging…Moreau’s S.O.S leaves a lot to be desired. I understand the MVAL is not the strongest (this year is exceptionally down), but that should’ve been accounted for by playing a tougher non-league. Just my opinion.

Granada finished tied for 4th in the EBAL at 5-4.

If Dublin gets placed in D1, they’ve got to be licking their chops. They’ve got a ton of talent. They finished in 1st place in the tough EBAL regular season at 8-1, before falling to a tough Granada team in the EBAL Tourney. Granada is not your typical 5th seed, and the Gaels split with them on the season.

Dublin’s 5 losses are to Campo & Sac (before Rosenborough left) at Gridley, Sheldon, DLS in league and Granada. They’ve beaten Salesian, Fairfield, Elk Grove, Placer, Granada, SRV & Dougherty before Sevilla’s injury. They just don’t want to be on the same side of the bracket as Monte Vista, who they’ve narrowly escaped from twice.

In the MaxPreps rankings for NCS, the top 9 teams are in the DFAL and EBAL.

That's the main reason I put Moreau in my bracket guess, thinking that NCS isn't likely to want their Open tourney filled by 5 teams from just those leagues plus SPSV. I chose Moreau, but I strongly considered Liberty. Maybe Liberty's got an argument here, too.

The seeding committee has a tough job ahead of them today.
