why isn’t there a NCS open? CCS has one. Pretty much same teams winning NCS titles every year especially d2-d5. Make a NCS open and allow other teams to shine. Is there anybody that has cif ties that can answer this for me?

Every section should have an Open. CCS does. SJS D1 is basically an Open Division at this point. No reason Salesian should be playing D3.

If so a list of 8 teams this year:

1. Salesian
2. Bishop O'Dowd
3.Clayton Valley Charter
4. Las Lomas
5. Dublin
6. Berkeley
7. Heritage
8. Moreau Catholic

Others:
College Park
DeLaSalle
Campolindo

I see why fans would want an open section in ncs but I don't see any reason that the schools would want it. In addition, with the way the CIF and sections are bumping teams up based on success, division 1 will shortly be the open playoff just like sjs.

I agree raising a sectional banner is still an achievement top teams should not
be knocking each other out so a mediocre team can raise a sectional banner.
open division for norcal is good enough in my opinion.

That would be a crazy playoff bracket! Imagine the intensity for those 3 days.

Really for NCS it’s the 4 private schools outside of D1:

Moreau D2
Bishop O’Dowd D2
Salesian D3
St Pat-St Vincent D4

How can most low division teams compete with a Salesian, Moreau, St Joes. It’s really easy to be a by standard and say they should work harder. How can private schools be in league with public schools? How about we have a WCAL in the east bay? Let O’Dowd, Moreau, Salesian, St Joes, De la Salle, St Mary’s battle it out. I’m just bringing up ideas.

Most low divisions publications can't because of demographics. Every few years I chronicle the list of D1-d3 state reps. It's around 2/3 of the teams are public. The reason that D4 and 5 are thrown out is because it is a a small school division and small public schools generally do not exist in urban centers due to real estate and economic issues. SJND is in a private school league. Salesian, St Mary's Albany, and st pats are in the same league and Logan was in the state playoffs from Moreau's league. The CIF has done this to itself. They stopped allowing teams to go up for a while and now want them all to go up.
That said, privates have advantages for sure. The biggest is administrative support. Look at how coach Brown left Miramonte or how every Berkeley high coach has been treated for 20 years. If a parent goes to the district, the coach will lose. Lastly, most of the Catholic schools would love to revive the old CAL. Wouldn't solve division play but league play would be enhanced.

PS. I'd love to watch an Apple Valley vs Corning state title game

Youseechief, Back in the 80s and 90s, the North Section competed and won multiple Norcal and state championships.

They haven’t won a state championship up here, going on 20 years. Last one was Modoc girls, 1998.
I have mentioned my thoughts on this several times and your post hits on a couple of reasons. One being the build up of privates the past 25 years. Hard to compete with a small farming community school and loaded privates.

Every so often it does come to pass. That’s why “When Cuba Conquered Kentucky” is one of my favorite books

Here’s wishing you great hoops

You may already know this, but there used to be a Catholic Athletic League that included O'Dowd, St. Joseph's, St. Mary's, Moreau, Salesian and De La Salle (see, for example, http://www.wcalsports.org/docs/The Complete History of the WCAL.pdf), but the NCS broke it up in the late 1980's despite those Catholic schools fighting to stay together.

The NCS, making bad decisions for over 30 years...

The public vs private school debate has been going on for years. If most lower division public schools win a game or 2 in D4 or D5 is usually considered a successful season!

I was a senior on Salesian’s baseball and football teams in 1986—the last year of the CAL. League champs in ‘86 were BOD in basketball (NCS Champs), DLS in football (NCS Champs), and DLS beat us 4-2 for the CAL championship in baseball. DLS lost in the NCS baseball semis to eventual champions Mission San Jose of Fremont. From what I remember, the main reason why the CAL was broken up was due to travel expenses/logistics. (Salesian and DLS were against this big time.) I hear there has been discussions of bringing it back from time to time.

The explanation I was given was that the NCS felt that having a league based exclusively on religion (in other words, where other schools couldn't petition to join) was exclusionary and wanted it abolished. Clearly not a problem for other sections.
