We got some great matchups this week. In the past making it this far guaranteed a norcal spot. Not sure how it works by adding the Open. My picks

Open - Top seeds start slow and both go down. Sawyer/ Lewis matchup should be good to see.

D1 - Upsetcity.com alert! Monte Vista pulls it off in a nailbiter. Granada ends DV nice road run.

D2 - Ashmore finds away and Newark advances. SRV rolls.

D3 - Miramonte sneaks out a close game.
SPSV Jackson dominates.

D4 - University and St.Marys

D5 - Urban and San Domenico

I believe that in having the Open division teams automatically qualify for NorCals, only the finalists in D1 - D3 are guaranteed spots in NorCal. The lower divisions D4 - D6 still take all 4 semifinalists. And I believe there is also 1 at large berth they can give, which will likely come from D1 - D3.

Since all the NCS Open teams are solely D1 & D2 (Campo & Salesian are D2; the other 4 are D1), I believe that all four D3 semi finalists advance to NorCals as well. I haven’t seen anything in writing that states otherwise. And in fact, because D1 has 4 Open participants, it’s possible that only the D1 Champ advances; not the loser. CCS has done that in the past. I don’t believe that’s appropriate, but it could be what’s done.

Thats not my understanding, but as this is the first year it could be the case. That is a big difference. I haven’t read anything official on it, but was going by what a knowledgeable coach (Clay K) on the girls side has stated. He seems to have a pretty good handle on it. We’ll find out soon.

According to the attached <first link, page 6>, the NCS gets 25 automatic NorCal Qualifiers, but not sure if that includes the 4 that they also get for the NorCal Division VI tournament <from the second link, page 5>.

Either way, they take out the six Open teams, that leaves 19 other spots available. If it does include the four from Division VI, that only leaves 15 spots for the other five divisions, which taking all the semifinalists in DIV & DV, only leaves 7 spots left for Divisions I - III, which closely matches what observer22 states above. If these 25 spots do NOT include DIV, that leaves 19 spots for the other five divisions, allowing all the semifinalists from Divisions III - V and 7 spots for Divisions I & II (other than the Open teams).. I have a feeling that it likely does include DIV, which, IMHO, would be a shame if Divisions I - III only get two spots each plus a "wild card"....

This is how it works:
Open: 6 norcal bide
D1: 2 bids (finalists)
D2: 2 bids ( finalists)
D3: 2 bids (finalists)
D4: 4 bids ( all semis are auto bid) because they are not eligible for open they get 4 bids
D5: 4 bids because not eligible for open
D6: 4 bids

That is 24 bids. The 25th bid goes to an at large team based on the NCS seeding criteria. It will most likley be the highest seed eliminated in the semi finals of D1-D3. Hope that helps

Chances are the at large berth will go to the D2 #1 seed SRV who lost to Alameda tonight. Both the D1 (DLS) & D3 (Branson) top seeds won tonight and are in the finals.

Correct unless the ncs switch to competitive equity to fill the at large bid. But if they stick to the criteria of last year its highest seed in D1 through D3 eliminated in Semis which is SRV. I wish there was a little more clarity on this so teams didn't have to practice for another week not knowing their norcal status

alameda won!
Was at the SRV girls game and stayed for the boys first half to avoid the traffic back to Union City. glad I stayed . A couple of thoughts. Alameda has really improved since I saw them Vs St Mary’s in late December. They were much better than SRV who looked slow and small compared to Alameda. Hard to believe SRV was a 1 seed but I was reminded they are only Division 2. They looked average at best and Alameda was much better from start to finish. Coach Quick does a great job with his teams. We came early for the girls SRV NCS game just before the boys game and was surprised that SRV boys have fallen to D2 while the girls are in the higher D1 bracket. Does anyone know why? The parent sitting next to us said it was because the SRV boys teams have been poor for the last 4-5 years so they dropped them down to D2. I thought you moved down or up only based on enrollment. Or does that mean if you aren’t good for years they move you down and enrollment no longer plays a part in the placement? I’ll admit I am confused. Can someone share the process?

Grab your popcorn @DonniePeckerwood here come the shenanigans. DeAnza doesn't stop. Lotta basketball to be played. Upsetcity.com can always be in play...

ST Marys beat Marin Catholic, who won between Piedmont and University?
