Reports are DLS Alum Kevin Fordon has been named the new Varsity Head Football coach.

First major decision under Riordan's new AD, Mike Gilleran. I believe a positive step in restoring the entire Football program. The players are already familiar with him as he was last year's DC. Should also help attract prospective student-athletes that would otherwise consider elsewhere.

Kevin Fordon named new Riordan Football Coach

This is an interesting move, I think it is a good one for Riordan. John Lee is probably a better assistant coach than anything, I was hoping he would have stayed at SHC after years of dedicated service. It also shows that Riordan is thinking of the future and constantly looking to improve.

To improve all they have to do is win two games. Eeking out wins over the last place winless WCAL doormat Sacred Heart Cathedral two years in a row wasn't enough.

Fubo, if it is so easy, why don't you apply for the job at Riordan....? I have a feeling you will be just as critical no matter who is coaching at Riordan...Sacred Heart Cathedral's Ken Peralta brought Riordan a WCAL championship once in football. Would you be happy if Riordan hired him again? Bottom line is, everyone wants to win but sometimes you just have to play the loser or spoiler role before your turn comes to win. It is not about winning or losing all the time in high school, many people come away with great experiences from playing the game. Matter of fact, if you talk to many good coaches who guide and coach, there is not much difference between losing or winning.

If they had hired another coach with a career won-loss record like the last two, yes I would be critical. I think this hire is an excellent choice. It showed vision and leadership from the AD and Administration. It also is clear they were done with the good old boys network coaching carousel and instead went outside the box with a more than qualified candidate. It gives them a chance to be the best they can be and that's all you can ask for.

Outstanding hire. It will be interesting to see how Fordon fills out his staff. Word is, there will be some prominent alumni returning to assist. Stay tuned

My spidey sense is telling me that this will once again be another spring/summer of jackrabbit packed posts on this board proclaiming another WCAL domination forecast...delusions of grandeur for a 1-and something team...Only made relevant because they proudly wear the "WCAL" moniker.

To save you the trouble, let me fill out a template for you...

1. We had the best period of summer workouts ever...

2. We have some thumpers on the team...

3. The new coach used a _____ to motivate our kids...

4. We will dominate WCAL...

This post sticks out like a sore thumb...or offers comedic relief...after all the state champ-related posts from the past few weeks.

New coach for a 1 and something team...I certainly hope so...but how about waiting until it's final...or better yet, when you win some relevant games???

Just imagine if they did win 2 games this past season...This board would have been a riot...

FUBO, totally agree. The fact Gilleran's decision process included "a thorough evaluation of the football program and have decided to restructure it" is something that has NEVER been done on Phelan Ave. The hire is not just throwing in a coach for the Varsity, but a plan to ensure sustained continuity, improvement and eventual success with the Frosh, JV and Varsity football programs. The takeaway I also get from the Fordon hire is he ACCEPTED the job - as I am sure he had concerns regarding full administrative support, the field project, overall facilities, S&C, youth football camps and participation and the school's long term sustainability.

I like the move - shows they are willing to go in a different direction to attempt to change the on-going atmosphere. Riordan this past season had some good players and was competitive with a strong schedule. They led Serra 3-0 at 1/2 time before being overwhelmed in the 2nd 1/2 and lost to eventual CCS Open Champ SHP by 14-7 in one of SHP's closes games this past season.
WIth the players Riordan will have next year if they can effect a different approach on offense they will have a respectable team.

You are not the only one who likes the move. Alumni are responding quite favorably.

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over again & expecting different results". Albert Einstein.

Most would agree that the last hires for both ARHS & SHC were not the most creative or innovative and a bit disappointing to most fans and alumni wanting to go in a different [new] direction. What I saw with both the above teams this last season was somewhat of a replay of the previous season. Some good athletes on both teams, some good defense at times and a lack of creative offensive schemes [almost sounds like I'm describing the 49ers & we all know how their "O" was this season].
Many of the games were eerily similar in nature in that the offense's went nowhere and the D was on the field far too long. Many of the first 1/2's were close, but the D's wore down in the 2nd 1/2 due to consistent 3 & out's by the Offense. Riordan was dead last in offense in WCAL league play & SHC was slightly better due to a soft pre-season schedule and having one of the better throwing QB's in the WCAL, so both teams need a complete revamping of their offense strategies. SHC had nearly twice as many TD's on the season as Riordan [31-16] but over 1/2 of those TD's came in the first 3 pre-season games against very soft competition [Galileo, Novato & Saratoga]. If not for Riordan's D and take-aways the scores would have been even more disproportionate.

So again I like the credentials of the new coach Kevin Fordan and believe this was the right move at this time.
