New USC Coach!

She had great success at Cal and USCB and if she can replicate that success at Southern Cal it means there could be another strong Girls Basketball team out west. I'm excited to see how things evolve

She did not have great success at ucsb she inherited a perennial NCAA team that Coach French left behind and road those coattails to the tourney in year 1 then year 2 they were sub .500 and then a WNIT birth which was not what Coach French was achieving for UCSB……then she takes Coach Boyles #1 recruiting class and rides it to the Final 4 then every year after that it was a decline no where near the success or trajectory they were on

Is UCSB to this day has never recovered from the cluster she left behind and Cal now is a pathetic shell of itself

Lucky for the Pac 12 that SC bungled this hire when they are sleeping giant….they will stay mediocre to the chagrin of the rest of the Pac 12

Looks like the media is only covering things at the surface. I was under the impression she was solid. With some of the talent USC has we will see what she can do with it.

I'm sure there's some positives your leaving out. I will say this, she seems like a quality human being, which doesn't always lead to winning in this backwards world.

Sure if $C is looking for mediocrity and good person then she may have a long career there, but what program has she won with her OWN players she’s recruited and left in a solid good foundation she’s she’s left ? That kinda answers it
there if you’re looking for a winner and program builder

Totally agree with MC415.. the track record is not there with recruiting and leaving a program in a better place than which she found it.

On the flip side.. we've seen it many times in the men's game and even football, a coach goes to the league, learns a ton and succeeds in the college game upon return. I'm sure she is not the same coach that left cal a few years ago

If you want to evaluate a coach by a quick stat review, I think the best indicator is win-loss in league. Pre-season has a lot to do with who you choose as your opponents. Post-season can be derailed by a bad game or bad draw. Measured by win-loss record in league over her tenure at Cal, Gottlieb was good if not great. I suspect we will see more of the same at USC. The bigger question is what ought to happen at Cal. Quite a slide downward in the last couple of years.

Using your logic there….she was 30-42 in Pac 12 her last 4 years (with all players she recruited) and never finished above 5th ? How is that killing it? Charmin Smith only coached Cal this year and she due to injuries played 2 walk on guards as their starters most of the year along with Mia who came in from miramonte as 17-18 year old high school senior to play tons on minutes thats how dire their injury situation was, they played all true freshman and sophomores and their freshman class was top 10 recruiting class in the nation……their lack of depth from upper class men was due to the roster management of Gottlieb, she doesn’t leave much behind when she does leave look at UCSB to this day

This year they will actually be playing with scholarship guards and have another nice class coming in, the young lady BOD just committed to them yesterday (#60 player in the country by by 4 star) so I think they will begin move back up

I think Gottlieb will give the program some stability to build on. She does have to show she can win with her players in what is a highly competitive Pac 12.

Home run hire? No

Good hire for this point in the process? Yes

You can schedule wins in preseason ... you have to play your equals in conference.
i was just wondering why people say preseason. pre season means the games do not count. Like the NFL preseason or NBA preseason. Shouldnt the word be non conference. NCAA basketball doesnt say preseason.

USC hired her for a reason. Give her a chance to do her job. If she does well, please have the courage to come back and admit you guys made a mistake. If she doesn't, then, oh well...

Hey I’m a Cal fan, all good on my end they made a decision to hire a mediocre coach, that’s awesome for the rest of Pac 12…….USC would have gone out and nailed the hire then the P12 would have to worry about another major player in the conference

No one has told me yet which program she has left in better standing then when she entered?
