I know most of us were thinking there were going to be 8 teams in the open.

Is there a qualifier I am unaware of?

3 more teams should have qualified.

Based on there state ranking all season riordan or salesian should have made it to make it a 6 team bracket

If I were in charge I’d get rid of the open all together and make D1 the new open.

It’s stupid that some of these teams in the open won’t play nearly as many games to win the title as other divisions.

Most of us were NOT thinking that there should be eight teams in Open. In fact, if you actually followed things closely, you were not surprised in the least.

And no, there should not have been 6 teams in Open. Five teams earned their way in. There isn't another team that should have been there.

Turtle, you are sadly mistaken, read the thread that said Nor-Cal Open thoughts?
Never saw your prediction either.
Here are a few from some of the sites regulars.

2 teams from SJS (Sheldon / CC)
2 teams from NCS (Dublin / Salesian)
3 teams from CCS (Bells / Mitty / Riordan)
And 1 from Central (Clovis West)

1. Sheldon
2. Bellarmine
3. Dublin
4. Mitty
5. Salesian
6. Riordan (or Bishop O'Dowd)
7. Capital Christian
8. Clovis West

Most likely taking :
2 teams from SJS
3 teams from NCS
2 teams from CCS
And 1 from Central
Just my guess.

My guess would be:
1) Sheldon (BYE)
2) Dublin (BYE)
3) Winner of Mitty/Bellarmine
4) Loser of Mitty/Bellarmine
5) Bishop O'Dowd
6) Clovis West
7) Salesian
8) Riordan

Predictions (assuming favorites all win section games):

1. Sheldon (SJS D1 Champ)
2. Mitty (CCS Open Champ)
3. Dublin (NCS Open Champ)
4. Bellarmine (CCS Open runner-up)
5. O'Dowd (NCS Open runner-up)
6. Riordan (CCS Open team)
7. Capital Christian (SJS D1 runner-up)
8. Salesian (NCS Open semi-finalist)

If clovis gets in. Salesian is out. Capital beat them early and Riordan beat Capital in Gridley. The big question is 6 or 8 teams.

Six would have been nice symmetry. Both finalists from each of the three sections with real D1 representative leagues. Otherwise, it’s okay... Some of the seedings are pretty wacky, tho.

The site regulars? Because someone posts frequently doesn't mean they know anything.
Don’t worry Turtle I’m as big a regular as their is on here and I posted this last week.
1 Sheldon
2 Bellarmine
3 O’Dowd
4 Mitty
5 Dublin
6 Clovis West Must beat SJM in Central open final
I picked the 5 and Clovis lost so there we have it. I believe Streak one had same thought and it’s his board

I did see those five as clearly in.

My issue is the lack of consistency from the CIF on who is in Open, who is out, what criteria is most important for seeding and the general haphazard way the brackets are done.

Besides that, it is good lol

Should still get some really good games over the next two weeks

I agree with you 100 percent. I am somewhat torn on this subject. But one thing that blows me away is the fact that the open is supposed to be the cream of the crop. So it’s like ok well, let’s throw a few in and move to the next division.

Let’s really look at this. Their is no guarantee Dublin beats Riordan again or beats Capital Christian. Their is no guarantee that Sheldon runs the table either, hell on any given day Riordan could knock them off. The open should be the premier teams period. The best 8 teams in Nor Cal, and it’s almost like the CIF says hey let’s pick five, and throw the rest into a 16 team bracket. To go from 5 to 16 makes no sense at all to me. In division 1 you have Salesian as well who can knock teams off as well. Personally I would have loved to see a 1-8.

Then the CIF is basically saying well hey Sheldon and Sierra or Mater Dei you guys win 2 games and your going for a state title, yet tell Salesian’s and The Riordans of the world if you guys want that state title you need to run off 5 straight no exceptions.

To have to go 3-0 versus 5-0 makes me feel it is a bigger accomplishment for whomever wins D1 versus the open.

And then on top of that hey open guys your gonna play a 11 team tourney while the ones we felt just didn’t cut it but can beat some of you on any given night, hey you guys get a 31 team tournament. If that is how it is going to shake out year after year, then I agree with Ayalar, eliminate the open. D1 is loaded yet if you want to catch the state final you have to go catch it on a Friday night.

@HSWIZARD73 I agree should have been a 6 to 8 team bracket salesian next to Sheldon and then Dublin played the toughest strength of schedule they went down and played in the platinum division of the damian classic and went 3-1 as far as resume goes they did all they could riordan was ranked pretty high all year long and if any section deserved 3 bids it was the ccs section and I believe either of those two teams would not have been just token first round opponents for Sheldon or mitty

Ok I’ll counter that with .... There have been years like 2013 where Sheldon beat a school a couple miles away Pleasant Grove 3x including the section championship. Sheldon went to the open and PG won a state title in D1 . They beat a team in Santa Monica that would have taken 4th place in the Delta League that year.
There’s always gonna be unhappy people no matter how you do it.

You make a great point, but personally I would tip my hat more to a team that has to go 5-0 and play in a 31 team division versus 11 and having to go 3-0. Either way the games will be great and winning a state title is huge. Would just prefer to see the open a tad more loaded.

An 11 team open title is better than a 32 team D1-D5 title . And if you don’t understand that then I can’t help you.

HSWIZARD, you make some good points but there is no guarantee that Dublin doesn't beat Riordan by more than 12, like they did the first time they played. At the end of the day, it is what it is, win & move on and prove the committee that they were wrong. I would have loved to see 6 or even 8 teams but someone saw it differently and now it's time to play the games.

Heat not asking for help and I always respect what anyone has to say. However and as I stated before it’s way more impressive to me to win 4 games in 8 days and move on after that and win a state title in game 5. Not sure if your saying well the best teams period play in the open and why eliminate teams that don’t have a chance. however it can easily be said that some damn good teams are going to be bounced in D1, who could easily say we belong in 2. And Riordan 1 vs MC 16 is not a game you can’t say well that’s a blowout. Could end up that way. But like one poster said MC was up 10 until Bryce took over in the second half of that game.

There should have been 8 teams in the open this year. I'll take a stab at the best 8 teams in Norcal, in order, and what the bracket should have looked liked:

1) sheldon
2) odowd
3) mitty
4) bellarmine
5) de la salle
6) dublin
7) capital christian
8) salesian

That woulda been sweet.

It's really not that clear cut but you can't argue your top 8 other than Riordan beat Capital, Mitty and Bellarmine. So they split with teams you have highly ranked with one loss at the buzzer to Mitty. But ok

Fair enough. I'm comfortable cutting bait with capital christian for Riordan. I gave mitty and bellarmine the edge over the crusaders(incredible team name) based on CCS open results
