A high-stakes Texas high school football game turned ugly on Thursday when a defensive lineman attacked an official after being ejected from the game.

Edinburg High School took on PSJA High School with a berth in the state playoffs on the line. During the first half, an Edinburg player, identified as a defensive tackle, was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct.

He then rushed back onto the field and while the official was turned away from his attacker hit him from behind and tackled him to the ground. One of the player’s teammates and members of the Edinburg football staff immediately subdued him.

A Twitter user watching the game on TV at home captured the play that led up to the attack on video. The player hit the opposing quarterback after the ball was thrown and was flagged for a late hit in addition to unsportsmanlike conduct.

According to the report, the official remained on the turf after the hit before being taken to an ambulance to be evaluated for a concussion and possible shoulder injury.

As of the time of this post, the status of the referee and any potential charges against the player were not clear.

The unnamed player is a star for Edinburg on track for All-Area honors, according to McCulloch. He’s also the team’s punter and kicker and was named The Monitor’s All-Area wrestler of the year in 2020. He was a favorite to compete for a stated wrestling championship in 2021 as a senior.

Edinburg went on to win the game 35-21 to advance to the playoffs.

Not a good story at all, but thank you for sharing. It made me think of an incident that my son was involved in at Cal Poly against Southern Utah. It was a home game at San Luis Obispo on a Saturday night. At some point one of Tyler's offensive line brethren got into a scuffle and when Tyler came to his defense someone grabbed my son from behind and pulled him down with his helmet coming off. This all occurred on the far side of the field and I didn't see it well. One of the other CP parents came up to me and said one of the SUU coaches did my son a favor by literally laying on top of him covering his head to protect him from the melee. Needless to say on Monday morning when I arrived at work I went to the SUU website and sent an email to the entire staff thanking whoever did this for looking out for my kid. I got a reply, I think it was from a defensive back coach saying "you're welcome, I would want someone to do that for my kid". After becoming a starter I think my son only missed two offensive snaps(other than backups coming in at garbage time, which didn't happen often)because his helmet came off and another snap against San Jose State when his helmet came off. After 15 years of tackle football I really miss him not playing anymore. We are blessed and have some great memories.

Not shocked. Dude was already suspended last soccer season for attacking a ref. Dude has some obvious problems and is a thug.

I saw this incident replayed on YouTube. Kid got riled up after a call went against him, and his teammates tried to do everything they could to settle him down. Didn't work. Kid hauled off and blew up the ref from behind, just as soon as he got the chance.

At the very end of the video, several security personnel ran across the field and grabbed him and ushered him off to the lockers.

That's a kid who should not be playing sports anymore for a good while... He probably shouldn't even be allowed to go watch his teammates play.

As a matter of fact... I am not in favor at all of arrests during games... But there is no way that was any sort of football act; it was assault and battery.

School was booted from the playoffs yesterday. Kid has talent, but that was plain assault. The bad part of it was it wasn’t “heat of the moment I took a swing.” It was motivated and calculated and he had to sprint about 30-40 after awhile of cooling off and being on the sidelines showing clear intent to want to injure the ref. Second time assisting a ref, he should never play sports again.

What I want to know is given his assault on a soccer official earlier within the last year, how was this kid even allowed to be on a sports field with officials? From my understanding this was not only a second time attacking an official but there is a history of bad behavior by this particular athlete. So again how was he even allowed to participate given prior attacks on sports officials? Just because you assault BBC an official in one sport does not give you the right to participate in other sports on the field. Sorry but if I am the official, I not only get the kid prosecuted but there
May ge a case against the school, league and state sports organization for negligence is disciplining an athlete with multiple incidents of assault on a sports official... I guess Texas may not have that type of law like they do in California where it is a criminal offense with consequences when assaulting a sports official.

One last thing, incidents like this are why there is such a shortage of sports officials in this day and age

I just recently saw this story. I believe that that kid should have some serious consequences coming his way. Probably shouldn't have been allowed to play given he already had a issue with this before.
But with that said I'm not sure I agree with the whole team being eliminated from the playoffs for it. They ended up winning that game fairly so why the disqualification? I don't think it's right that the whole team gets punished for that.
Any thoughts?
