The Dragons beat USA Today Pre-Season ranked #14 Greensboro Day in the Iolani Classic in Honolulu. Hardy with 19 and Gaskins with 17. Clutch plays made by their supporting cast adds up to a gutsy win for the Dragons. They’ll face a Jefferson team tomorrow night that beat Taft tonight.

Jefferson was may fave team when I lived in the Portland area... Especially the 1999-2000 team, my all-time favorite team anywhere, ever... even including Jason Kidd's teams!

Either one wins tonight, I'm good... But... Go Dragons!

Was National Player of the Year Aaron Miles on that team?? Ended up as a 4 yr starter at Kansas w/multiple Final 4's

Yup, Miles and a ten-deep roster of guys who'd practically all end up playing in college, mostly smaller D1's. Even though Miles was the star, the team was seamless. Any night, any one of half-a-dozen could go off for 15 or 20. And they played hard full-court D, too, causing all sorts of hell for their opponents...

Nearly all of them had played varsity together since their freshman year, and that team was truly a team!

My favorite thing to see in basketball is a full-court, full-team fast-break with three or four passes and *zero* dribbles leading to an easy layup or dunk, a beautiful thing that I see maybe ten times per season on average (and I see over 100 games a season).

With this Jefferson team, this seemed to happen several times a GAME.

BTW, Miles is now head coach with the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Mike Lee was on that team, also went to Kansas.. Thomas Gardner was a Sophomore, ended up going to Missouri & played 4 years in the NBA

Sounds like Jefferson has a rich tradition. I guess they are pretty good now too. Jefferson beat O'Dowd 63-50. Nobody played exceptionally well for the Dragons, and Jefferson had a 6'9" finesse big that exploited the Dragon's lack of size. The Iolani Classic final will be Monteverde vs Jefferson while O'Dowd will have a rematch with Fairfax for 3rd place.

Tradition, yup... The Demos definitely have that. State champs last year, eight state titles total, as far as I can find.

And they have this, the coolest mascot/logo in all sports...

Don't mess with that donkey!

Interestingly, this school was slated to close down sometime in the late 2000's due to budget problems in the Portland school district. When I heard that, I wanted to sneak into their gym and STEAL this mascot from the gym wall and display it in my living room! Fortunately, the district reconsidered under heavy pressure from neighborhood parents, and the school survives.

Probably due to the budget difficulties, the Demos have no JV team. They do have a freshman team, though... I don't know if they still do it, but those freshmen used to play (and darn near always win) the freshman game, and then they'd play the JV game right afterward... and win that, too. On most nights, it'd be two blowout wins. And I mean BLOWOUTS, like 72-15 followed by 80-45. Unfortunately, there are practically no records of this on MaxPreps.

Interestingly, two highly-rated SoCal teams (Mater Dei and Crespi) invade Oregon along with legendary power Oak Hill of Virginia in the 16-team Les Schwab Invitational starting Dec. 27.

If things go according to plan, the semis (Mater Dei v. Jefferson and Crespi v. Oak Hill) should be ridiculous!

Of course, upsets can (and often do) happen... There have been some years in this tournament where nationally-ranked teams went home with their tails between their legs after going 2 and 2...

Mater Dei is still good im sure but not the team LSI thought they were getting with Bol Bol and PJ Fuller now gone. Who does Crespi have this year? Haven't heard much of them since they won state a couple years ago with Deanthony Melton (USC).

The biggest factor for Crespi is Arizona-bound senior guard Brandon Williams. He was out for the year with an injury last season, which contributed greatly to their poor record against a very tough schedule. I think they went 10-17. Thus far this year, they are 10-1 with the loss being to 9-0 St. John Bosco.

Meanwhile, Jefferson got clobbered by Montverde tonight, 71-43. :(
