KP, my post should have been clearer. I believe they did very well with what they had and their coach should be commended for the wins and near wins he was able to bring to the program. The zone he ran caused some folks some major problems.
I generally agree with everything you said, except the statement that they had plenty of talent on their team. I disagree, at least when compared to most of the SFL and the other DI teams that the EDH community thinks that ORHS should compete with (Meaning Sheldon and Jesuit). Jesuit, Sheldon, Folsom and Woodcreek were way more talented than ORHS the last two years. I believe that Nevada Union and Granite Bay were also more talented than Oak Ridge during the same period. My point is that you cannot blame the ORHS coach for the fact that ORHS did not contend for a section championship and did not win more games. Look at some of these facts, for example . . .
1. They played in the toughest league in the section.
2. As you point out, they won many games against very good teams.
3. They almost beat Woodcreek and played Modesto Christian very close in playoffs this past February.
4. They are not nearly as talented as the other top teams in their league or in the section.
It is also important to understand that Oak Ridge is impacted, which usually makes it harder for kids to transfer in to the school.
To make their coach the scapegoat for their failure to have the same success as they do in girls basketball, football, baseball, lacrosse etc. is wrong IMHO. If anything he should get some credit for what he has done there the last two years with one legit college player on his roster.
As far as the years to come, I do not know much about their young talent coming in, but losing Battaglia is a big loss. Compton and Jared Casey were their best inside players and both graduated as well. Woodcreek will be very strong and Folsom has some young talent returning as well (although they lost a lot of really good seniors), so the SFL will remain a challenge for whoever takes over for ORHS.
