Oakdale and CC should both be 9-0 when they battle it out week 10 for the VOL title....Who wins?...Curious to know everyone's thoughts.

Sounds like a good match up. I'm interested to hear what the sjs guys think about this one.

I would lean to Central Catholic. Very experienced and physical group that is keeping its play up through their tough schedule. That is always the question for CC going through the VOL.

Two great programs at 9-0 playing for the league title week 10... That's what HS football is all about. I'd lean towards CC but I like Oakdale's SR class. If this was Vegas I'd say it's a pick em!

Only thing to be wary of with Central Catholic is their depth. They only have 34 players on the varsity and an injury or two could hurt them.

CC has 36 players according to the official website. Oakdale has 44. Not a huge difference, especially when the the bottom kids rarely, if ever, play on most teams anyway. I'll go out on a limb and say that the private school typically has better talent from 1-36 than the public does.

The important thing is, CC has Montell Bland and Hunter Petlansky. They will be the best players on the field, IMO, and should help carry the Raiders to a win. Oakdale is always a well-coached and resilient bunch so it's usually a mistake to count them out -- but I do like CC in this game.

I know this is a different year but Oakdale did beat CC by 21 last season. Oakdale seems to be more versatile this year and brings back most our starters. Oakdale, some what contained Rice last season. They have to be on top of things, play smart, and keep down their penalties. If they do this, I think they have the win...Whom ever wins I think it will be a close game.

First post, but have been following CC football for some time. I like CC this year for the following reasons: 1) Oakdale has to face a very good Manteca team this week. Manteca, by far, will be the toughest team Oakdale has faced all year. That game will not be the "cakewalk" like CC has this week against East Union. Oakdale might be a little beat up come Sat morning. 2) Oakdale lost VOL POY Frankie Trent, and has found no replacement for him. Oakdale also lost their "speed back" in Darus Nelson who re-tore his ACL earlier this year. Oakdale's OL is by far their biggest strength, but they don't have the RBs like last year. 3) CC went away from their "ground and pound" offense when they played Oakdale last year. Oakdale " some what contained" Justin Rice last year by giving up 186 yds on 5 carries 2 TDs and 116 yds on 8 receptions 1 TD. Expect more of a game plan like CC did against Manteca this yr (Justin Rice 28 carries for 285 yds and 3 TDs against Manteca). 4) As many points as CC has been putting up this year, their defense seems to play second fiddle in the news. They quite possibly could have the best LB tandem in Freehauf and Escobar, in the entire SJS. CC has only given up 29 pts in 5 league games (might still be 29 pts after East Union on friday) 5) Oakdale is not getting a lot of help from last years JV team. CC won 69-10. 6) CC is playing at home and not the corral.
All that said, I see final score CC 28-14. Either way we are in for a treat, and the beauty is they will face each other again in the SJS D3 playoffs.
And ThunderRam: Although Bland and Petlansky are very good players, I will respectfully state that I believe Fresno St. commit Justin Rice will be the best athlete on the field.

Speaking for Oakdale fans, right now we need to focus on Manteca not on being 9-0 and playing CC. No one is overlooking them here.

Thanks for all the insight you provided. Very good info.

Regarding the comment quoted above, I completely mixed up Bland and Rice. Rookie move on my part. There's been so many Bland's through that program that the name just stuck. Justin is the kid I was thinking of. Rushed for over 2K yards and 30 TD's last season. The other Rice is pretty good too. Montell always sticks out to me because he played up as a freshmen and I thought he'd be the guy for a few years, but Justin took that role and ran with it.

Thanks for setting me straight.

No worries! And your right, seems like Central always has a Bland on the team. I think the junior WR Daron Bland is going to be the last one for a while though.
Jared Rice (no relation to Justin, or Justin's brother Jared who is now redshirting at Fresno St.) has filled in admirably at RB due to Justin's early season ankle injury. He is also a great KO/Punt returner. Between blowouts and the ankle injury, the Manteca game was the only "complete" game that Justin Rice stayed in this year. I would guess and say out of the 8 games, he has played the equivalent of 4. That should work well for CC come playoff time, as he should still have pretty fresh legs for their playoff run.
The Manteca/Oakdale game this week should give everyone a better sense of how the VOLs "Big 3" stack up. Manteca gets their playmaker Dakarai Charles back this week after missing last week with concussion-like symptoms. Regardless of how it all plays out, the VOLs big 3 should be ranked 1, 3, 5 in the SJS D3 playoffs. Inderkum, Patterson, and Sac High are going to be wildcards as they are all on that D2/D3 playoff bubble. Placer will be on that D3/D4 bubble.

On the National HS board, I mentioned Central as possibly breaking into top 5 in NorCal a couple weeks ago and got some chuckles. I think they actually are ranked top 5 by Cal-Hi now.

I realize that they are a smaller private, but when they can beat really good D1 programs the likes of St. Mary's-Stockton, it isn't a huge stretch, IMO.

I'm a big fan of CC and what they've managed to accomplish.

Same goes for Oakdale. Merzon has built a very consistent program down there.

This should a dynamite game regardless what happens this week.

Oakdale beat Manteca 45 to 14. Central beat Manteca 28 to 7 two weeks prior. Oakdale took out their 1st string end of 3rd qtr. Central's 1st string stayed in the entire game. Most all of these posts were taking CC to beat Oakdale. I just don't think it will happen. While CC does have a good defense, Oakdales Offense is just way to potent, with to many weapons...No, Oakdale does not have a star receiver, or running back like Justin Rice.... Oakdale plays as a unit. When I say this I mean that Oakdale does not have a Justin Rice. With the exception of Franki Trent last year, I can say Oakdale very rarely over the years has had a so called Star player...So, with that said, I am going to disagree with those of you that took CC over Oakdale.

Not to take anything away from Oakdale, as they soundly beat Manteca: but what could go wrong for Manteca, did go wrong. First of all, they played without their starting OLB/FB (Kitson 6'2" 245, knee) and ILB (Thomas 5'11" 190, head/neck). Pretty important pieces when fighting against the winged-T offense. In the first half, on one drive Manteca dropped 2 passes in the end zone that should have been sure TDs. On another drive in first half, Manteca's QB gets stripped on the 1yd line going in for a sure TD, Oakdale recovers on the 1 foot line. Next play Oakdale's RB gets stuffed in the end zone for a sure safety, but home refs say 1 inch line no safety. Manteca had 5 turnovers in the game. Would all of this made any difference in the outcome? Who knows, but it gives us something to talk about on these boards!!! Usually games of this magnitude, and hype never live up to their expectations. I, for one, anticipate an absolutely fantastic high school football game this Friday. One word of advice: if you are going, get there early as it is going to be packed. With Inderkum and Sac High looking like they will go D2 for playoffs, look for this game to get repeated in the D3 SJS section finals. Mark Tennis of CalhiSports commented that whoever wins this game will likely move into the State's top 25 list. I am going to throw it out early and say: Central Catholic 34 Oakdale 28

I would love to see this game but live way too far away to make it reasonable. What a showdown. I will go with CC by 7 based on their performance over St. Mary's, their slighty better defense, and home field. Would someone post updates Friday? Thanks.

And how close were you to make this call?

You're right I wasn't close, never claimed to be. Just my opinion, but I have watched the hudl film a few times trying to see some sort of forward progress that gets him out of the end zone; but I just don't see it. Like all high school refs, I have been known to be wrong a time or two. My point is/was, what could go wrong for Manteca did go wrong.

You may be right. That's why they play the games. I just hope we see a really good one!

I wonder if the game will be streamed anywhere?

And Central Catholic isn't Manteca either. CC 27 Oakdale 21.

PG , you should cut "play some ball"
some slack. His comparison of both teams against Manteca was a
logical usage of data that fans,
coaches, writers etc. use in their
discussions. Prediction: Whoever hits
the hardest the longest will win.
