DLS over Salesian
Sacramento over Folsom
Moreau over Sheldon
Modesto Christian over St. Francis
Great games all the way around. Do not see any blow outs, would be surprised if there are any.

As well as they've played lately, I'm wary of Moreau. That embarrassment last year makes me skeptical.

I think Folsom escapes with a win.

Its the norcal. Team's that play AAU get embarrassed. Get ready for more of it this year. You better be able to win in the 50's. Value possessions.

DLS by 15 over Salesian.
Folsom by 5 over Sac High.
Moreau and Sheldon. The AAU matchup. Expect this one to be in the 70's if not 80's. I will take Moreau.
Modesto Christian over St Francis by 10. Very impressed with Crusaders.

Out of the eight teams that survive to the NorCal Open, I have managed to witness seven in person, all of those more than once (I'm pretty happy with that). Only one I didn't experience is Sheldon, though I have seen a number of their opponents from this year and have seen the Huskies in the past and have at least *some* idea what they like to do...

DLS over Salesian by 8. Watch out for the Pride next year and even the year after; very young team!
I'll take Sac's speed and depth over Folsom by 1. Edit: If Durr cannot play (which looks likely based on what I saw Saturday), Sac's depth edge takes a hit. And I would go with Folsom by 4 if he's out.
Moreau over Sheldon by 6 in a track meet.
Modesto Christian over St. Francis by 13.

I've been saying DLS v. MC in the NorCal Open Final all year; nothing has changed my mind!

I'm with you Kidmann. I see DLS vs MC. MC does a lot of things well. I've seem them play up tempo and win and then last night in a lock down game. They are playing with a lot of confidence too. I'm going to try and get out to that sac vs Folsom game. That might be the best matchup early on.

Salesian is very young. Scary.

DLS vs Salesian pretty amazing game. Early last summer I said Nick Peters for DLS and Brandon McGhee for Salesian two unsigned seniors were sleepers in the class of 2016, and now both are playing in the open division!! If I'm a college scout these are the type of players I'm looking for, underrated but winners.

The best thing about Norcals this year is that there is no Chino Hills or BoD from last year or 2013 Sheldon. Anyone can beat anyone on any given night. It'll come down to who was prepared and who came to play. True basketball. Don't get better than that.

I guess I'll say it first. I see st. Francis beating MC. Don't be surprised to then see Sheldon in the finals.

I agree with DG. MC over Folsom and MC over Sheldon in SJS. These games anyone could win on a given night. MC is playing at a very high level and you have to pick your poison, stop the guard or the big, then the cast is good enough to do the rest. Sheldon was in the game down to the final minute. Folsom could have done some things different to win. The dark horses are Salesian and St. Francis. I think MCatholic v Sheldon will be best or most fun to watch. Horrible idea to put two SJS teams, Folsom at Sac in the first round. Folsom will have to find a way to stop Young and cast. CIF effectively put all four of SJS areas best teams in Open leaving D1 depleted.

I agree . In. D1 someone like Redondo Union who has been top 10-20 nationally all year or Crespi who beat Redondo by 18 in finals will cruise.

My initial thought is: WOW St. Francis got screwed....... no way they should be seeded lower than Sheldon... only 2 losses (to Sac and Folsom, 2 very legit teams obviously) and ran the table in the WCAL and CCS Open, but get seeded below a team that lost in section semis??? geeeeeez

WCAL was down this year though. Who were St Francis' signature wins?

I disagree. The Chino Hills team this year is much better than last year with the 3-prong Ball brothers. I do not see any NorCal team challenging the #1 boys team in the country. Nor do I see any SoCal Open girls team challenging the NorCal Open girls champion team, specifically St. Mary's-Stockton, the #1 girls team in the country (or Miramonte or Mitty who have the only challenge against them). Chino Hills boys this year is something else. Last year SRV got past Chino Hills due to outstanding play by their guards and because Lonzo Ball fouled out. If you haven't seen this year's Chino Hills team play, check out YouTube. They are fun to watch!

U completely misread my post. I was referring to only Norcals and I was basically saying that there isn't a dominant team that is a clear cut favorite

I understood what your point was and I agree with it, but you included 2013 Sheldon with Odowd and Chino.

Sheldon was the 4 seed in Open, beat Salesian in OT (after losing to them earlier in the year), then lost to Mitty in the NORCAL final. Mitty was a team that got destroyed by Salesian that year. That year was a 3 team competition from November

My point is that I agree that this years field APPEARS to be very competitive unlike last year and the South this year. I too am excited to go watch these games.

I loved watching that Sheldon team BTW. Very exciting tempo, defense, and teamwork that year

Ok, I just looked at St. Francis's schedule and you're right, they didn't beat much of anyone outside of the WCAL (El Cerrito and O'Dowd probably 2 best non-league wins and that's nothing special)... should be 4 great games though regardless....

My predictions:

DLS by 10 over Salesian
Modesto Christian by 7 over St. Francis
Moreau by 15 over Sheldon
Sac High by 1 over Folsom

Sac High by 12 over DLS
MC by 1 over MC (see what I did there... winner revealed below... lol)

Moreau by 3 over Sac High

Chino by 60 over someone

Chino by 50 over someone

Chino by 35 over someone

Moreau by 1 over Chino... 99-98

Mcatholic wont get past Sheldon. Sac/Folsom will be LIT!! I think if Cinco can't play then that hurts Sac big time. Still should be close. who ever wins that game will beat DLS and will play Sheldon or Modesto for the ship. Sheldon/modesto rematch would be nice but SF has tools to beat MC so I could see SF winning.

I'll toss my two cents on the Open Division:

De La Salle over Salesian: Pride will put up a good fight, but De La Salle's experience wins out.
Sacramento over Folsom: Best game of the opening round. Solomon Young is the difference
Moreau Catholic over Sheldon: Really good matchup of guards. Frayer vs. Manning will also be a great matchup.
Modesto Christian over St. Francis. Almost picked St. Francis here, but MC does a great job of grinding out wins,

The 2013 Sheldon vs Salesian NorCal Open semi-finals game at St Mary's was one of the best high school basketball games I've ever seen! Sheldon started four D1 players and Salesian was led by Jabari Bird and Mario Dunn. It was nice seeing AG perform well against the W's last night!

DLS over the Pride. Game will be tough as guard play of the Pride is young but good. 5 days for Meleis to prepare.
Sacramento over Folsom. Young is just too much they will have to throw everything at him. Ford will face unyielding pressure. Other guys must step up. If Durr doesn't play it will be tight game.
Moreau over Sheldon. They will go 1-3-1 to slow down Sheldon. If not huskies will win, they let one slip away from them Wed.

MC over St Francis. Will be nail biter. Lancer have size and shooters to limit issues that Ellis causes on other teams guards. Hewitt and Idelhen cancel each other out in this one. Will be fun.

Great shout out to Gordon last night. 20 and 16. Love that guy.

I'm definitely going to sac high vs folsom. That will be the best game of the night. If Terrell doesn't step up I will take Folsom. You are going to get 20 and 10 from Young. That is a given. I also will lean toward Mike Wall having a better game plan. Should be fun.

NSBASKETBALL- Those are def 2 toss up games. I mean do you have a clear favorite going in? Not really. I think you will see DLS handle Salesian by double figures and MC take care of business going away against St Francis. MC has done very well in the Open system. I don't expect that to change.

Whaddaya know... I managed to get ahold of a ticket for the DLS game! Despite the fact I live just a couple miles away from DLS, I almost always strike out trying to get tix to high-demand games there, even if I go to the school several times to try and nail down a ticket. This time took just one try. Walked up to bookstore, bought ticket, went on my merry way.

My bet is the gym will be half-full.

I always seem to have success at DLS just going really early game day but having to sit in an empty gym watching them setup. I bet it's a good crowd but not full.

Keep us posted. I will be over at sac high vs Folsom.

I always go really early on game days at DLS... I like to watch the freshman and JV games, so going early is just fine with me... It's just the big ones (like MV, for example) always sell out before game day. Typical gameday experience for the MV games is to drive up at something like 3pm, see the "Basketball Game Is Sold Out" signs all over the place including the parking lot entrance, and go home. Had that happen once or twice, now I try to get tix days ahead... and that is a crapshoot. Seems like I can go to the bookstore and they would say "We don't have the tickets from the printer yet", so I go home. Then they get the tickets a half-hour later and sell out in 20 minutes. And they won't reserve a ticket, not even if you offer to pay first.

And, what's worse is when I settle for the online stream I can see 50-100 empty seats, sometimes more. &$%$#*&^ me off.

I've never gotten into the gym at DLS when they were playing MV. On the other hand, I have managed to get in for DLS at MV, sometimes...

What an incredible first round in the Open tonight. Great close games all the way around. 2 OT games and 2 games decided by 3 pts. Even the 1 vs 8 seed game went OT.

This is exactly why I love the Open concept rather than have all these teams running through different divisions and not playing each other. Not everyone gets a trophy but it great for the hoops fan.
