Just wondering about who will play in the Open Division in NorCal this year. Any thoughts on the list below or others who will be considered?

1. Bishop O'Dowd: Win or lose NCS D-3 title

2. Folsom: They qualify if they win the SJS D-1 section title

3. Monte Vista/De LaSalle winner: Both teams are qualifiers

4. El Cerrito: Provided they win NCS D-2, which they should

5. Serra: Provided they win CCS title

6. Modesto Christian/Sacramento winner: Provided Sacramento is a qualifier (not sure)

--------------------------------------------

Other considerations

1. Monte Vista/De LaSalle loser: May be left in D-1 tournament, but could go Open as they qualify

2. Moreau Catholic: If they beat O' Dowd, they go Open for sure. If they don't, I do not believe they are a qualifier

3. Campolindo: Has the resume to advance and is a qualifier

4. Sheldon: I do not believe they are a qualifier even if they win the D-1 SJS title

5. St. Francis: I do not believe they are a qualifier even if they win the CCS title

Good list...I see Both DLS and MV going if DLS wins..They are state champion amd beat DLS twice plus a win over FOLSOM
EC lost to Mitty is bad lost..Moreau beat Mitty i think they get nod over EC ..remember they took EC last year when they lost to BOD by 20..
SF or Serra will go...winner of CCS..
May be Mack if they win OAL

Here are the Open Criteria from the CIF website:

The following criteria will be utilized to select the teams for the Open Division for the CIF State Basketball Tournament. A school needs to only satisfy one of the criteria below to be considered:
1.A school must have won two consecutive section basketball championships; (current year and previous year) or a school must have qualified for the regional championships for three of the past four years. (including current year)
2.A school qualifies for the second straight year after competing in the state or regional final the previous year.
3.A school qualifying for their regional playoffs may request to be placed in the open division.
4.A school competes in its section Open Division semifinal
5.A school was ranked in the Top Ten of Cal Hi Basketball, Cal Preps and/or MaxPreps Rankings (early March) in the current year and/OR previous year.

Moreau meets the 2nd criteria so they are a qualifier win or lose.
Campo is Open eligible since they meet #1 by being a qualifier 3 of the past 4 years
Sheldon win or lose is Open eligible same as Campo (3 of 4)
Don't know about St Francis

I still think NCs pulls up 4 to the Open: O'Dowd and D1 winner for sure. 2 of 3 between El Cerrito, D1 loser and Moreau

Thanks for the information of the eligibility of Moreau and Sheldon. That certainly makes things more interesting. I am revising my list to include 8 possibilities. They can select up to 8, but personally I think they should select less. I think the first two years they took 7, and then 6.

1. Bishop O'Dowd: Win or lose NCS D-3 title

2. Monte Vista/De LaSalle winner: Both teams are qualifiers

3. Folsom/Sheldon winner: Both teams would be a qualifier

4. Moreau Catholic: For sure if they beat O' Dowd, maybe if they don't

5. El Cerrito: Provided they win NCS D-2, which they should

6. Serra: I only think they will go Open if they beat St. Francis in the CCS Final

7. Modesto Christian/Sacramento winner: Provided Sacramento is a qualifier (not sure)

8. Monte Vista/De LaSalle loser: May be left in D-1 tournament, but could go Open as they qualify

--------------------------------------------

Not Sure

1. St. Francis: I do not believe they are a qualifier even if they win the CCS title.

I think they make another 6 team bracket (Like they have done the past 2 years)

NCS- 3 Teams- BOD (Lock no matter what) El Ceritto (Making Ward eligible this late moves me to believe they will be put in as quid pro quo) and Division 1 winner (Either DLS or MV)

CCS- 1 Team- Whoever wins the CCS Open is in.

SJS- 2 Teams- Folsom/Sheldon Winner & the MC/Sac High Winner

This would give you a solid 6 team bracket.

Now If they go with a 8 team bracket (which I think hey won't because this is not a very deep year in Nor-Cal in terms of strength of teams)

NCS-4 Teams- BOD/EC/DLS & MV (Or Moreau takes the final spot)

CCS- 2 Teams- Winner of Open and Runner up? (or 1 team from CCS and 3 from SJS)

SJS- 2 Teams- Folsom/Sheldon Winner & the MC/Sac High Winner (and possible a 3rd team wild card)

You see how much harder it is to make a 8 team bracket compared to a 6 team bracket. This is why i thin they keep it at 6.

Lets just automatically send BOD as the North representative a la Daniel Larusso in the Tri Valley karate tournament (Karate Kid 3). Winner automatically defends title the following year without having to go through the tournament.

You nailed it Fentons. The 6 team bracket gives Nor Cal a better chance in the State finals. Pulling teams who would be a top seed in their division into the Open doesn't make sense. Especially when we have a dominant Open team.

4 Teams for 2015...In a Perfect World (Check out Matchups)

With BOD heavily Favored in North . Commissioner should only have a four team bracket.. (2) NCS (1) CCS (1) SJS
Why deny 2 or more teams the oppurtunity to fight for state ship..

2 examples from last year
Drakes get destroyed in STATE game .El Cerrito would of been a better game
If Monte Vista was a open qualifer , they wouldnt had won a D1 title

SoCal is bigger and have more quality teams.
BOD and D1 winner

Folsom if they win, or MC if they win

Winner of CCS open

BOD vs ST Francis/Serra and Folsom/Modesto vs DLS/MV

Nor Cal
D1

Top teams Sheldon, DLS/MV, WoodCreek Folsom/Modesto Serra

D2
Top teams Sac High El Cerrito St Francis Modesto

D3
Campo Drake Moreau Vanden Serria SHC

Semi games will great and winners will be strong candiates to win the state game

Ball of Fame:

I agree with your idea of not taking all the teams who have a chance to win the State Title to the Open Division, but saying Drake got destroyed in the title game last year hurt a bit. I agree that El Cerrito would have been a better match-up against Chaminade (simply because of quickness) and I know we lost 71-51, but did not feel like we got destroyed. They hit a buzzer beater at the half to go from up 35-27 to up 10. We were also down 10 with a minute left in the third quarter. I know it got away from us in the 4th, but when someone says a team got destroyed I usually think of someone who is down more than 20 early. In a game that we shot 24% from the floor (credit to Chaminade), which is 20% less than what we shot on the season, I felt we could have kept that game close with one hot shooter. I know I am just being sensitive, and like I said, I agree with your point. Thanks for your thoughts.

Sorry stance. I was their sitting by your rooting section. You got destroyed. The 6'11 kid had 3 fouls and barely played in the first half. BUT your fans were awesome!!

Good luck next week.
