Open division is needed in each section. That will separate the best of the best in each section. Then the section need to follow the rules SJS section if a team plays in the open the should be in D1 the next if they aren't already. This will separate school no matter what the student enrollment. Cif maybe a mistake when the start student enrollment because it gave the private schools an advantages. Private school is where most players what to be because of the academics and sports are both high level. Don't get me wrong there are some good public schools that are the same.

Just think the Open will be all true D1 schools according in a few years. This will give others schools a chance to when the Divisions. The Open is for elite programs in every sport.

Won't work in Northern, SF and Oakland sections. Not enough quality teams. Not even close. Would work in NCS, SacSJ and CCS.

The need to make a new section and combine. Northern, SF and Oakland should be in one section. Those section haven't been strong in years.

Won't happen in our lifetimes, young man. Way too much history and politics involved in SF and Oakland sections. Northern is what it is: Smaller rural schools separated by miles and miles of farmland, mountains and rivers. But your notions re SF and Oakland are sensible; SF could easily be absorbed by CCS and, likewise Oakland by NCS. But the odds of that happening are about as solid as having Donald Trump join La Raza.

I know all about the politics from long time ago. Where they get automatic if they when there league into Norcal. On the boys the had some good teams but they didn't have to work for it!!!!

Do you even know the boundaries of the Northern Section? Yreka to Colusa (just north of Sacramento). Oakland and SF? Yes that makes sense. But Leave the Northern Section by themselvs....

Questions about a NCS open tournament - if it had happened this year.
1) Which 8 teams would have been included?
Carondelet, Heritage, Miramonte, BOD, Salesian, Campo, Cardinal Newman and the 8th team? James Logan? Montgomery? Arcata?
2) Also rank the teams 1 - 8

This my opinion
1) CARONDELET
2) BOD
3)Salesian
4) CN
5) MM
6) HERITAGE
7) Campo
8) James Logan

RespectBBGame I had it exactly the same except I put Campo and James Logan tied for 7th place. I then put 8th place up for grabs with teams like St. Marys,Castro Valley, Berkeley, American, California, San Ramon Valley, Acalanes, and a few others ( I'm sure I left a few good teams off) battling it out.

And of course teams within the top 7 could all knock off one another because I don't think any team is so much better than anyone else in the top 7 that you can overlook them. And for that matter even the honorable mentioned teams would give 1-7 a good game.

One thing that would be great about an Open in each section would be that instead of trying to convince people that your team is worse than another to avoid the NorCal Open is that now you'd be trying to say you're better for a better seed.

And because you'd be guaranteed a NorCal slot, there's no penalty for being in the Open. If you're in one of the other divisions, you have to reach the finals to be guaranteed a spot because one of the Open losers might slide down and eliminate one of the divisional semifinalists.

I agree. And people really shouldn't be so afraid to just play the game regardless to who their playing. But this obsession to win seems to be greater than a desire to improve. When no team or person will win forever regardless. It is all a part of a journey towards self and team improvement. I guess some feel bigger by being able to attach themselves to a state championship. And some enjoy being in power positions to control the outcomes. The open in each section idea sounds like a good idea. It's much better than tanking deliberately. By any means.

I would say that the sectional open format in CCS has been mostly positive so far. I did talk to one coach whose team got into the CCS Open a few years back, and it was that school's once-every-twenty-years chance to compete for a section title. So he wasn't exactly thrilled about taking two punches to the chin in the Open bracket, while a lesser team got to raise a section title banner in their gym. But he also said that his team was psyched to be playing in the Open bracket, so it wasn't all bad.

Also, I don't follow NCS teams as closely as some of the others on here, but I wouldn't expect Salesian to be seeded above CN and MM. I realize there are head-to-head results, but they have too many losses to keep that comparative seeding advantage. Also remember that injuries should not affect selection (in this case who would theoretically get into the Open) but they do/should affect seeding, which would be a negative factor for Salesian's seeding.

This pretty good. Think of the matchups
CLet vs Logan
CN vs MM
BOD vs Campo
Salesian vs Heritage

The fight to get into the Open would increase if the Open was the only recognized state championship as the rest would be referred to as division championships. Some schools would be okay with hanging a "divisional championship" banner while the powerhouse programs would strive to earn a state championship. Upsets would still happen but some of the questionable scheduling (piling up losses) and convenient losses (Mitty opening round CCS loss in 2015) would not be questioned.

The OPEN is LOOOOOOOOONG overdue in the NCS and SJS!!!!!

Then 6 teams play their way into the Norcal OPEN...with 2 at large....

My NCS 8 team OPEN

1.CLET
2.BOD
3.SALESIAN
4.CN
5.MM
6.CAMPO
7.HERITAGE
8.SMB

I put SMB as my number 1 alternate. They would have most likely have won a few games they lost if it were not for a couple of injuries to key players early on. But I think Heritage beat Campo. And I would be afraid to jump CN over MM. But all these teams are pretty close.

Imagine if the NCS went to the open format....

First Round
1.CLET vs SMB
2.BOD vs Heritage
3.SALESIAN vs Campo
4.CN vs MM

Second round - assuming all top seeds won
1.CLET vs CN
2.BOD vs Salesian
3.Heritage vs Campo
4.SMB vs MM

Think about the effect of a NCS open on the divisional playoffs.....

D1: No Carondelet and Heritage

Now D1 top 6 seeds are: Logan, Cal, Castro Valley, Berkeley, Mt. Eden and American.
Logan split with Castro, Castro split with Berkeley, Mt. Eden beat Castro and lost to Berkeley by 2. American beat Cal and lost to Logan by 2. D1 would be wide open (pun intended) with some drama - the two teams, Carondelet and Heritage that are almost guaranteed to play in the D1 finals are in the "NCS open" playing for a spot in the state open - Carondelet (likely) and Heritage (return to D1 NorCal).

D2 without MM would be wiiiiiide open. Montgomery might be favored but there are other teams that would now be in the mix.

Plus just the prospect of having the best 8 teams slug it out on the court would be some great basketball.
