Oscar announced on twitter this morning that he was reopening his recruitment... thought something seemed strange when he didn't sign early. Should be a hot commodity this season now.

Reason I was given for no signing was that Moreau's seniors wanted to do it together and some won't have it finalized until after the season.

Not sure who initiated it, but interesting Cal would drop a local prospect if they were the ones to do it first.

From what I heard Cal wanted him to go to prep school and reclassify into the class of 2017. Frayer did not want to do that.

Class of 2107 huh? Flying cars and all. Seriously, did he peak early? Seems like same player as a Sophomore. Freak athlete but not basketball player.

Larry,

After reading your response I did a bit of research. To say he hasn't got better is factually incorrect. His stats show that he has actually improved every year. To say someone who has won Freshman POY, Sophomore POY (both by Norcalpreps), and 1st team all Norcal in his Junior year is not a "basketball player" says more about you than it does about him.

If Jordan Ford had these same stats you would be raving about how good he is. As a matter of fact ask Jordan what kind of player Oscar is since they were teammates on the Soldiers. I guarantee he wouldn't agree with your assessment.

Dude, all you do is come on this board and champion a few athletes and tear others apart. Classic case of someone taking out their frustrations of not being able to accomplish their dreams by tearing down others. Grow up.

I'm sorry, but I would have to agree with Larry!! Whenever I saw him play his whole game was centered on dunking. There was no refinement of his game from year to year, and if scoring is your indicator of getting better you're wrong.

You aren't looking at this correctly. I'm talking about against his peer group which is other 4 and 5 star players across the country. Not local HS kids he plays against in a terrible league. Most players improve naturally form Fresh to Senior year. That isn't a surprise. How has he progressed against other elite players. That is the baseline. You guys don't get it.

Let me see. Frayer started as a Freshman being a top 150 Nationally Recruit. He is still a top 150 Nationally recruit. Along with some other (not a lot but a few) players from the Nor Cal.

When he arrived at Moreau Catholic he was a back to the basket center with high level athleticism. His dribbling was sub par, and his shooting (our side the key) was lacking. If you saw him play in the NCS Championship game against O'Dowd last year. (the best possible comp since they won the open state title) He shot it really will from the three point line and really showed his perimeter development. Most of his baskets in his frosh/soph years were layups and dunks. Now most of his shots are jump shots.

He has made himself a threat from everywhere on the floor. Sounds like improvement to me.

Who MC plays in league is out of their control, but since Knight has taken over they have played every top team in Nor-Cal. Monte Vista, Drake, Modesto Christian, Mitty and so on. Last year Mater Dei, Prestonwood Christian (TX), Alameny (So- Cal). This year they open with Sierra Canyon go to Hawaii and Palm Springs. They are playing way better schedule then most Nor-Cal Teams.

Lastly to say he is not basketball player is not indicative to the professionals college coaches who have recruited him. I guess they all have missed the boat. Smh. Sometimes the adults on this board are way over the top.

Well its odd to me that none of the kids from the program who committed well before the period have signed. As a past signee I couldn't sleep that week until it was done. I was signing that day no matter what. Also most schools want that letter in their office as soon as they are open. If I was a parent my son is signing, anything could happen in 6 months. Better offer, or offer resended. To put off a life changing event like this is something I haven't seen. Not bashing, or saying it's wrong, it just seems odd.

No some of you guys are way to emotionally attached to these players. CAL is building a great program its too bad he slipped away. Curious what other offers he has? Weird that his profile isn't stacked up???

The game of basketball is not defined by how high you jump, please understand that. Charles Barkley said tonight that if DeAndre Jordan can't dunk he's useless. Ditto Oscar is a great athlete but great basketball player he's not.

oscar frayer has battle unimaginable adversity in pursuing his dream

cal isn't the best place for him, this recommitment is in everyone's best interests...coach martin did not drop frayer

good luck to the high flying oscar

If you like Jabari Bird Then Oscar is not far off. Bird shot it better at same stage but Frayer does everything else better imo. Better athlete, defender & plays tougher. All tools that can help a college program win games. If you havent seem him in the last few months i'd wait a few weeks to check his progress. Its obvious the kid has been working on his craft. Any program that presses & stresses uptempo would be a great fit. (Texas)

As I told an ESPN analyst last year who said my son was low D1 at best, time tells all tales. This year, after we signed Pac12 the analyst issued a public retraction which was very cool. It took 5 player of the year awards and a Pac 12 NLI to get that retraction, but hey I'll take it.
For those of you who doubt Oscar Frayar's playing ability I promise that you will be eating your words down the road. He let other uncommitted people have the light this year because he is above all else an amazing teammate and a uniquely selfless player. After seeing him play all over the country first hand there is something I can share that most of you don't know. He can turn it on any time he wants. He can shoot, he can dunk, he can pass well, and for those of you who haven't seen him play in person he can jump out of the freaking gym.
The Frayer family has the full support of the Koné family whatever they do and wherever they choose to go. #Family

Actually Oscar de-committing help the other recruits on the team who don't have offers, because alot more coaches will be coming around.

Everybody has an opinion, so please don't knock those who voice their opinion. Things get taken out of context when you read into a blog, and you think that we're making comments about a kids character. Last night I watched Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaq say that Blake Griffin has no post game, and that he's the same player as he was three years ago....opinion.

Good luck to Oscar Fryar and school he decides to commit to!!

Watching Cal Bears/UCSB on P12 Network earlier this week, got to see many former Bay Area/NorCal prep stars hoop it up.. Jabari Bird, Ivan Rabb, John Green, TJ Taylor, Gabe Vincent, Stephen Domingo and Michael Bryson.

I am sure I will be able to see Oscar on TV next season.

I will take Jabari Bird any day over Frayer. Comes from a much better program (Salesian) who actually taught fundamentals. Bird knows how to play the game and will get a chance to play in the NBA. He's a great athlete. Not a freak like Frayer. He can shoot, defend, and plays within the game. Assist10 I completely agree with what you are saying. Why are average athletes like Okofar and Towns killing the NBA right now? And yes in the basketball world both of those guys are average athletes. Because they have skills!! They are skilled period. Can shoot, rebound, defend, dribble…. They learned to play.

Frayer is a VERY good player....... But if he was a program changer (a la Ivan Rabb, Jalen Brown) do you think Martin would let him get away??? I'm just gonna leave it at that.....

Have you guys caught Jalen Brown yet? Holy smokes… What a load. He reminds me of a more athletic Draymond Green. Doesn't shoot it as well but can do everything else. Rabb seems like he can get a double/double every night. And the one kid who just flat out puts up #'s is Jordan Mathews. CAL is going to be tough to beat.

Doodie- agree with you.

Agree on Jalen Brown... Total beast. I saw him play with Team USA in the under-19 world games this past summer and thought that he could very well be Cal's top recruit rather than the awesome Rabb, and might even be as good as or better than Josh Jackson, who also played on that team. BTW, I'm sure those games are still available online... Very much worthwhile to see!

The Pac-12 season will be a war, though... Every team I've seen and/or read about looks at least solid, even those &@*$^@*%&@!!! u$c Condoms. :) I wouldn't be surprised to see half-a-dozen or more Pac-12 teams in the Top 25 by Jan. 1. And some of those could very well stay high up in the rankings all season.

Kiddman32- Yeah, he's def NBA ready. (brown) Rabb will be more of a work in progress. I'm still not sure what position he plays. The one thing I love about his game is he can shoot! He makes his FT's and can extend out to 17.

I will tell you who isn't good. UCLA. Yuck. They do have a really good freshman guard. (another Holiday brother). But both USC and UCLA look weak to me. Right now I think its a 3 league race with Arizona, CAL, and Oregon. Also Washington and Oregon State will surprise some teams.

Since the conversation has shifted to the Pac-12, Utah center Jakob Poeltl looked good against San Diego State

Being a Bruins fan and all, I hate to admit it... but UCLA doesn't look too good... Not awful, just not very good.

They have shown a tendency during the Alford era to start slow and then get better just as league games get going. Looked pretty lousy at the start last year, but made the Sweet 16.
