NorCalSportsFan, thanks for the updates, keep 'em coming. What's the weather like at the game? What's it feel like, instead of sitting in the stands during a Friday night lights, to be watching hsfootball in broad unfiltered daylight?

SHP scores on drive . 3 yard td run.

Palma 21 SHP 14 q2 5:05

SHP can't stop Palma rushing but throws the ball and gets called on holding and drops ball. Go figure.

Palma 12 yard td pass Richardson to Blanco before half

31 - 14 Palma q2 10 seconds

31 - 14 Palma half

Palma got back rb torculas and playing much of second half resting Martinez and Jr Telford is back but not in game SHP has no answer for Martinez, lots of turnovers and penalties.

A lot closer than I thought as Palma scored 21 unanswered point in the 1st period alone. Holding penalties killed a lot of Palma drives. Gotta give credit to SHP for staying in the game until the end.

That game shouldn't have been close. Palma's Martinez didn't play much in second half due to cramping up. They held him out as a precaution since he had a bad hamstring injury from track. Palma was called on holding on running plays away from the ball on a couple plays and on pass plays, etc. Very sloppy game. SHP defense couldn't stop Martinez when he was in and Palma backup (his first game this year had a few good runs but also some mistakes). Maybe a couple times they stopped him for less than 5 yards. Do got to hand it to SHP for getting back into the game and they made some big plays. SHP isn't close to the team they had last year. Both teams also fumbled the ball. It was a sloppy game.

It was hot at the game....around 89 but intense sun. I was lucky to be under an umbrella and had shade. Must have been hot on the fieldfor the players. SHP has a really nice campus. I think Palma and SHP have faced each other twice now and Palma is 2-0.

SHP QB is really good. He had some nice throws.

I guess the last SHP td actually hit the ground first before receiver got it and ref called it a td. shouldn"t have been a score. It was trapped. Still too close a game.

Sounds like Palma got back to their roots of running the ball. They always seem to get too flashy and get away from what they do best early in the season. Emilio should be getting atleast 20 carries a game.

Yes Martinez ran at will. Yes it was hot. Yes Palma had penalties that killed drives. But despite all that, the game was close as indicated by the final score. SHP does not have the talent they had last year but the kept playing and made the game close in the end. Its what they do... they will be a playoff team and might see Palma again.

hsfb44, sre you an SHP follower? The reason I ask is that I'm interested if you saw both Palma and Riordan last week and could make an assessment of both teams. I believe Riordan also qualifies as D3.

I have ties to the program from awhile ago, so I know it well, but I did not see last week vs Riordan. My take is that SHP had a special team last year with a great player in Ben Burr Kirven. Back to reality this season where they can compete in their A league (top 2 or 3), but to beat teams like Palma and a WCAL is a different story. The question with Riordan is can they qualify for playoffs as an at large because my guess is they will not be in the top 4 in that league. Also WCAL does not have the A+ designation so its about points for Riordan. Palma is well oiled machine, very disciplined and wins year in and year out. Although a little sloppy today with many penalties. Their league usually comes down to the San Benito game. Seeing both teams play (SB and Palma) I give the slight edge to San Benito.
Good Luck to Riordan making playoffs. I personally like the new format and the D2 and 3 will be very competitive.

Thanks, again, for the updates, NorCalSportsFan. I like yer crisp reporting style. Do you recall if Palma has played Los Gatos during any of the past dozen or so pre-seasons? That's a game I'd like to watch, at Helm Field in LG. Muds

Last time Palma played Los Gatos was when David Fales (Chicago Bears) and a junior at the time was QB in a playoff game. Lg won the game 20-14. They played at Helm field - tall grass at the time. Fales engineered a come back and was flushed out of the pocket and went down and the ball came lose and was called a fumble and LG recovered in their territory. Was a good game. I thought he was down (his knee) and then the ball was knocked lose, but evidently the refs didn't see what I did as well as others. Great game though.

I used to live in Los Gatos and would check out a game or two a year at helm field. Great campus. The football team trains on a hill that goes to the Lexington reservoir and up the side of a dam. A couple world-class marathoners train on that course.

Palma should beat Hollister this year if Martinez is healthy. The game is at Palma home field. Also teams that can pass and have more balance will give them more problems on on defense. Hollister is a running team

It may be possible that Coach Pete and his large-great coaching staff along with his smallish numerical roster and small school enrollment - has returned to the pack somewhat. Lots has gone really, really good for the SHP football program and to some degree - they have snuck up on some other opponents. That said I expect SHP to be in the hunt and competitive as ever by the end of the season.

Watched this game on the replay and had a few thoughts:

We had Palma in the preseason Top 20 and I think they will be back there by season's end. Good size on the lines, good QB play and Martinez is a very good back. Lot of receiving options.

Liam McMillin doesn't get a lot of pub, but he is a quality TE. Physical and runs well.

Big difference for SHP this year is physicality. Last year's team was very physical led by Burr-Kirven. That was pretty evident against Palma and Riordan. Offensively, they are pretty sound and can challenge you different ways.

Depending on seeding, those two teams could meet again in third open division bracket.

Thanks. I was at the game, but wanted to see it again.
NorCal, hope you enjoyed the SHP hospitality and bbq as I was unable to catch the game... Were you able to see any of the campus? Though I am a Riordan fan/alumni, my kids go to Sacred Heart Elementary schools also on the campus. Parents I've talked to who were at the game were very impressed with Martinez and the team. Wish Palma all the best this season!

I think SHP has a beautiful campus and great facilities. One of the nicest in the state. The BBQ was excellent - among the best. I've been to the school a few times including Menlo for games (football and basketball). I currently work in neighboring Palo Alto and had a business in Palo Alto and Menlo Park in the past and catch games at the local schools from time to time. I went to the SHP v Salinas game last season and game reminded me in some ways as the Salinas game as far as the SHP come back. SHP should do well in league and could make an impact in the playoffs. They have a very good QB and skill players. If they shore up the run defense, they will be formidable come playoff time.
