Week 7

Some observations after the first 2 weeks of league games:

Gabilan- Salinas is the team to beat but they can be beaten. As whole the difference between top and bottom is not that great. As out of the first 12 games only one (Carmel over Christopher 38-24) was decided by more than 1 possession. So unlike years past every week should have some good matchups and maybe even a surprise or 2. Gilroy no longer playing does help even things out a little as they would have been blown out most weeks. I would suspect at least 5 maybe eve 6 teams will make the playoffs.

Mission- MVC got a huge win over Monterey to take control of the division. I am still not sold on Seaside, they are undefeated, but their opponents record is 1-25 combines. The Bishop O’ Dowd win is not as impressive. I believe the MVC, Monterey and Seaside will represent the division in the playoffs. But don’t be surprised if Alisal knocks off one these teams to sneak in.

Cyprus- NMC had a huge win over Soquel last week. From what it sounds like NMC defense really helped out with a pick six and big goal line stand. There is only 1 guaranteed spot, and right now between NMC, Soquel, Gonzales and Santa Cruz, I am not sure who wins it. This will be fun to watch play out.

Santa Lucia- Its over! RLS has this in the bag! Forget about Pacific Grove! Truth is that PG is probably the best team, but they will have to get by RLS. With St Francis CC only playing with 16-18 kids, they just can’t compete the whole game. The rest of division is just looking for building blocks for next year.

Last week 11-1 (NMC “upset” of Soquel) 70-24 for the season.

This week starts with a Thursday game:

Thu 10/10 Soledad (CA) vs North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:00pm – Both these teams have been a inconsistent. Soledad has been less. Soledad 24-18

Fri 10/11 Seaside (CA) vs Monterey (CA) at Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey, CA), 7:30pm – I am not sold on Seaside’s undefeated record vs 1-25 opponents. Monterey has played a much tougher schedule. Monterey 27-20

Fri 10/11 Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) at Scotts Valley (CA), 7:30pm – Scott’s Valley had some nice wins to start the season but have lost 4 in a row. Make it 5. MVC 35-14

Fri 10/11 Watsonville (CA) at King City (CA), 7:30pm – I expected both these teams to be a bit more competitive this year. King City seems to be playing better than the Cat’z. Plus, it is KC Homecoming. KC wins 28-14

Fri 10/11 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at North Monterey County (Castroville, CA), 7:30pm- SLV has had a long season, they may need to bring back the microphone helmets. NMC rolls on 24-7

Fri 10/11 Gonzales (CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:30pm- Soquel probably should of won last week and they are favored this week. According to the computer they are the better team. I picked Gonzales to win this division at the stat of the season. Upset special- Gonzales 28-27.

Fri 10/11 Alvarez (Salinas, CA) at Aptos (CA), 7:30pm – Alvarez is big and strong, Aptos is small and quick. Both run a wing T but not the same. The game will be over quick as neither passes a lot. Small and quick wins. Aptos 28-24

Fri 10/11 Christopher (Gilroy, CA) at Salinas (CA), 7:30pm – Last week both teams played in much closer than anticipated games. I don’t think Salinas is a good match up for Christopher, they have trouble vs the pass. But Salinas D has some holes. Salinas 35-21

Fri 10/11 Palma (Salinas, CA) vs Carmel (CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm- Because Carmel is playing, the game will be entertaining. Carmel offense is really good! Palma’s RB1 is really, really good! Palma 42-35.

Fri 10/11 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Greenfield (CA), 7:30pm – This is a good match up between 2 teams trying to build for the future. (Nice way of saying they are not that good). Greenfield has been playing better. Greenfield 28-18

Fri 10/11 St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) vs Marina (CA) at Santa Cruz (CA), 7:30pm – Marina has really struggled this year. St. Francis has some really good player just not enough of them. But they have more than enough to beat Marina. St. Francis 35-0

Sat 10/12 Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA), 2:00pm- If there was any justice in the world this game would have been played on Sept 19. (Talk like a Pirate Day). Oh well RLS Pirates are way better this year than the Harbor Pirates. RLS 35-7

Blaspheme!

Don't be fooled by the Alvarez game. Salinas was hung over from the Palma game. Alvarez is improved and may be a team that can scare people next year, but they're not within 7 points of the Cowboys in a regular situation.

Salinas 50-something, Christopher 21 (with 14 of those points likely coming in garbage time).

lol

Salinas will beat Christopher. Christopher can not stop the pass. Carmel was able to use the pass to set up the run, I imagine Salinas will have similar success. I have seen Salinas play, but looking at their scores they will give up points to good teams. (this does not include the 71-7 North Salinas beat down).

The big point on the Gabilan is that the gap between the top and bottom is not like it has in years past. In my opinion, the top 4: Hollister, Palma, Aptos and Salinas have all regressed a little bit, while usual bottom feeders Alvarez and Christopher have improved. Carmel seems to be right in the middle. It is making for a more competitive league which is always more fun for us fans.

I will let PAL Booster do the Play off predictions, but I do see a path, with a couple upsets, where 6 teams from the Gabilan can reach the post season.

Salinas can be beat. Not saying they will but Palma ran all over them and Alvarez is a running team. I imagine that Aptos or Hollister has a shot.

Seaside beats Monterey coaching staff is to good and the physicality will negate the speed of Monterey. My upset of the week is SLV over north county!

Seaside has lost their starting TB, QB and LB for the season, all with broken collarbones. Not that common a football injury, and definitely taking its toll on Seaside despite their undefeated record.
