Week 8
One thing I love about football is that every week brings an important game. Unlike basketball and baseball, you have one bad game you may miss the playoffs. Every game matters. Last week we had some teams start to make statement in their respective divisions. While this week there are more big games!!
Gabilan: I talked about how the competition was fierce and the games were close. Well last week the average margin of victory was 26 points. The top 4 are starting to establish themselves. Still Salinas’s division to lose as they have the huge win over Palma.
Mission: Seaside had a huge win over Monterey to set up a showdown with MVC at the end of the season. That game will probably crown the league champ. Monterey now needs to lick it wounds and try to secure the third spot ahead of Soledad and Alisal in order to return to the playoffs.
Cypress : North Monterey County showed no ill effects from their big win over Soquel by easily defeating SLV. Soquel blew by Gonzales in the second half. Now NMC must face Santa Cruz, winner will have the inside track to the title. Santa Cruz still must play Soquel as well. This is a B league, but only 1 team is guaranteed a playoff spot.
Santa Lucia: It is great to see programs like Greenfield getting better by playing in this division. And hats off to St Francis for continuing to battle despite a 15 to 18-man roster. But this division will be decided this week between RLS and PG. The winner should be able to cruise to the tittle and a trip to the post season.
Last week 10-2, 80-26 for the season.
Fri 10/18 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm- I picked Gonzales to upset Aptos last week and they got blown out. This week should be a little “easier” for the Spartans. Gonzlaes 24-14
Fri 10/18 North Monterey County (Castroville, CA) at Santa Cruz (CA), 7:30pm – Santa Cruz lost to PG and Scotts Valley, but beat Alisal and Gilroy? They have been playing very well since the PG loss, But NMC has been pretty dam consistent all year and their defense is really good. NMC 24-21
Fri 10/18 Soquel (CA) at Watsonville (CA), 7:30pm – Soquel had a nice bounce back win over Gonzales. This division is competitive enough that they can still play for a title NMC could get tripped up. Soquel should roll over the Catz’. Soquel 35-7
Fri 10/18 Palma (Salinas, CA) at Christopher (Gilroy, CA), 7:30pm – Palma used their size advantage last week to wear down Carmel. They wont have that same advantage over Christopher. But Christopher is not nearly as athletic as Carmel. Palma 42-7
Fri 10/18 Alvarez (Salinas, CA) at San Benito (Hollister, CA), 7:30pm – Alverez has the type of offense to keep this thing close and respectable. Hollister is still the better team, but I expect it to be close. Hollister 20-14
Sat 10/19 Salinas (CA) at Carmel (CA), 2:00pm- Though they have the size, Salinas try’s to out finesse you with their QB and passing game. This sets up well for Carmel who has no size on either side of the line. But in the end Salinas is just to deep for Carmel. Salinas 35-29
Fri 10/18 Scotts Valley (CA) at Seaside (CA), 7:30pm- After last week’s win over Monterey I will stop talking about Seaside’s schedule. Theirs staff and kids have done a great job, despite losing 3 of their best skilled players for the season. Seaside 21-7
Fri 10/18 Monterey (CA) at Soledad (CA), 7:30pm- Computer says Soledad wins in a close game. I say Monterey is too fast for Soledad. Monterey wins a close one 24-23
Sat 10/19 Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) vs Alisal (Salinas, CA) at Watsonville (CA), 7:30pm
projection: MVC continues their push towards a league title. They will have to do a lot of pushing vs the big line of Alisal. MVC wins 24-14
Fri 10/18 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) vs Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA) at Cabrillo College (Aptos, CA), 7:30pm
Harbor does have chance to win another game here. This should be good, but everytime I think harbor has “turned the corner” they lose. PV wins 38-20
Fri 10/18 Greenfield (CA) vs Marina (CA) at Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey, CA), 7:30pm
Greenfield is improving, both the JV and Varsity rosters have lots of kids. It is a slow process but it will happen. Marina is going in the opposite direction. Greenfield 24-7
Sat 10/19 Pacific Grove (CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA), 2:00pm
I was going to go into a long essay about the Greatness of this game. How the winner controls the fate of the Santa Lucia Division in their hands. A division so feared that Folsom refuses to schedule them in the pre-season. But if you have ever read any of my posts you already know that there is no freaking way I am picking PG to win. RLS wins 24-23. “PIRATE BALL BABY!!!!”
