Any teams to watch for and any players to acknowledge? I am interested in D1 to D3.

South SF's Cedeno is a pleasure to watch. Smooth. Smart, Savvy.

I understand she will be playing with Cal Baptist after graduating SSF. Does anyone know how good her supporting cast will be? Because good hard working, talented, unselfish, high IQ players, like Brittney Cedeno are much better with good coaching and good player support around them.

Just imagine how hard she would have been to deal with had she went to Mitty, Pinewood, or SMS. And then imagine how many times those teams may have been #1 in the nation.

or stayed at Sacred Heart

or stayed at Sacred Heart

Not to open cans of worms because obviously there was a reason for her not remaining there. Plus I'm not so sure Sacred Heart would have had the national impact potential and overall support that Mitty, Pinewood, and SMS would have given her. But absolutely no doubt Sacred Heart Cathedral would have been much better.

My question again was does anyone know what her supporting cast will be like at Cal Baptist? The coaching and players around her.

Cherokee moving on--Sequoia 49 - Santa Clara 24. 20 wins for Sequoia most in school history. First trip to a semi-final in school history. Sequoia will now play in the semi-final of D1 at Evergreen Valley High School on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.

I can't imagine adding a high D2 caliber player would have vaulted Mitty or ST Mary's and Pinewood into multiple national championships. Their rosters are loaded with D1 and D2 players. I'm assume that you're not implying that playing for coach Paul at SSF prevented Brittney from reaching her potential. Remember at SSF everything, and I mean everything ran through her.

Regarding Cal Baptist, last year they reach the national semi finals in the D2 championship before losing to Virginia Union..a team that had former Urban High school player Rachel Pecota (2009) playing for them. Cal Baptist is transitioning to D1, so they may struggle for a few years.

Perhaps the biggest difference between SSF and the private/parochials, beyond the rosters, is the scheduling. The WCAL and the WBAL are the two strongest girls' hoops leagues in NorCal. The PAL-North is many, many steps below those two. But Cedeno would be a terrific player for any team in any league in NorCal. Or SoCal for that matter.

colhenrylives,

I agree 100% on that fact ! Unselfish good team players tend to play much better with a better supporting cast. Her scoring, steals , assist, overall development, team success, and impact would have most likely went up Playing at Mitty, SMS, or Pinewood. Because the overall support is better. Brittney Cedeno would make any team she plays for better IMO.

I'm sure even the coaches for these top teams know she is as good or better in many ways than perhaps some girls who played in the starting lineups for them over the 4 years . We also know that opinions (especially about children) are just opinions. Not knocks on the coaching or player support at SSF. Because If the SSF coach and just about any of the players at SSF also coached or played with the support in place at one of these top 3 teams they would also most likely see a spike in their development and/ or success rate as well. Because most coaches and players do better with better support around them. Lower the support at one of the top 3 teams mentioned and the success and development for the coaches and players there would be lowered as well.

Regardless to that, thanks for answering my question regarding the supporting cast at Cal Baptist. Best wishes to Brittney and Cal Baptist.

MA over Evergreen Valley 51-42. CCS D1 Simi-finals - Carlmont vs MA and Silver Creek vs Sequoia. PAL South is looking strong.

And, to be honest, SSF was expected to compete in the Open Division this year. But the arguments against that move prevailed at the seeding meeting and Menlo School got the nod. Which is OK. For the moment, SSF is competing against its neighborhood-based public school peers in Aptos in Division III. Good for them.

Any discussion of the SSF program compared to Pinewood, Mitty and SMS has to be prefaced with the obvious: SSF's roster is strictly local; the other three are most assuredly not. The enrollment rules are vastly different. Cedeno attended SHC in SF as a freshman and transferred out. She had her reasons. She seems quite content back in her hometown.

Personally see Soquel giving SSF a good game on Wednesday. They are better than there record with 8 loses coming from 3 WCAL schools Pinewood and Aptos. Plus it’s in a gym Soquel is familiar with.

Also I think Sequioa is going to have a tough time vs Silver Creek. The Augmon sisters are back and doing work. A much different team that lost to MA by 30 in December.

Some good players from D3 to watch outside of Cedeno
Gabby Giuffre 2020 Aptos. 22 points
Natalia Ackerman 2020 Aptos 25 points
Grace Smith 2018 Live Oak
McKensie Duran 2019 Soquel
Hannah Hocom 2019 Aptos
J Miller 2018 SSF

Agreed re Sequoia. The Cherokees won't outscore anyone. Their offense is limited. They rely first and foremost on their smothering halfcourt matchup zone. If Silver Creek can bomb successfully from deep (and press full-tilt), you do indeed have a good point.

Sequoias discipline and structure will frustrate Silver Creek. Augmon sisters are good in the open court. There will be no open court against Sequoia. I don't see Silver Creek being able to play half court, that is what you have to do against the Cherokee. They will slow the pace down and force Silver Creek into a half court game. Good luck to the Raiders!!!

SSF, will have no problem with Soquel. Cedeno will have her way and Soquel will have no answer for her.

By the way, Silver Creek lost by 41 at MA in December. I don't think Augmon sisters would have made up 41 points. Sequoia has lost two out of three to MA. But they have beaten MA once.

I am a huge fan of Cedeno and have been since she came to South City when she was a sophomore. While she has made a huge difference to the team, she has helped to make her teammates better and they are showing a lot of hard work to get where they are. Her court vision and eye for getting passes down low is probably the best in the CCS.

Cedeno is the younger sister of Anthony and Michael Smith both standouts at El Camino and who both went on to playing college basketball. Anthony at Howard University and Michael who just graduated from Cal Baptist and was a two time PacWest Player of the Year and multiple All American Awards. That could be why she chose Cal Baptist whose women team went to the finals in the NCAA Division II two years ago and semi finals as well. Her brother Michael who I followed as an El Camino Alumni myself had a tryout with the LA Lakers and is now playing professional ball in Germany. Everything South City is continuously having write ups about him and Cedeno so I have been able to watch their growth as they played through the years.

Cedeno could lead this team far but it will take the whole team since Norcals will be tough and hopefully they will win CCS to get there. She is a very humble player who looks to help make the best shots for the team. I wish her and South City success since I think their #1 seed was accurate and they are the team to beat.

It could be she wanted to be coached by the south city coach, she wanted to be closer to home or maybe she did not like SHCP. No matter what reason, Paul is very lucky to have her but she has done great under his guidance.

She is happy and thriving so that is really all that matters. I would never knock her decision or her SSF coach who it does appear has done his job well.

Lots I didn't know. Thanks for the insight. Just glad to know she is thriving and harry. Pretty funny...... Happy that is:)

The Cedeno situation is similar to 2017. She was hurt in the PAL tourney title game and was clearly hobbled in CCS competition. That had a major negative effect on SSF then; if she's significantly compromised, SSF is a much different team, its easy rout of Soquel without her notwithstanding.
