This will not be a politically correct discussion. But here goes. Now that USF's Jennifer Azzi has announced that she is a lesbian and married to one of her assistant coaches, one has to wonder how that will affect recruiting efforts on the Jesuit Hilltop. Not everyone is thrilled about gay marriage. Still, maybe it won't matter much at all. It's even possible that it might help recruiting. In any event, no one can say it's boring in Donsville these days. By the way, I cannot imagine what the reaction and fallout would be if the new USF men's mentor announced that he's married to one of his assistants.

You do realize that Tara Vandeveer is gay and her partner is an assistant coach? Not out of the closet but the worst kept secret in womens basketball. Doesn't seem to have hurt Stanford's recruiting. Kudos to Azzi and her wife for their honesty

Honestly I'm shocked that Azzi being a lesbian is news...another secret, not so secret. I don't think it hurts her recruiting at all. A gay men's Coach might be a problem. A gay women's coach? Don't see a problem, especially at USF.

Maybe she will trigger more women, in and out of basketball, to acknowledge publicly who they are. The more commonplace, the less interesting ...

In this case, in the long run, as a society, honesty is the best policy. But of course in particular cases, that has often not been true.

Again, can you imagine the reactions and repercussions (especially for recruiting) if the new USF men's coach announced he is gay and married to one of his assistants? Even the Jesuits would have to think twice, or three times, about that scenario.
