Mitty presented Riordan a different look with Tran coming in on their last series to close the 1st half. Excellent counter move by Coach Fordon in putting Boone @ qb to run the read option and wildcat to change things up. Mitty qb Serra came in with the impressive rushing numbers, but Boone seemed to smash all those with 2 long runs for score in the second half alone. He could have had three, but it was called back by a holding penalty.
Riordan's line play in the second half and overall team speed were the keys to the victory today. Fordon makes a gutsy call on 4th down with a short snap to Riordan's 245lb Payton Ilalio who goes right and pitches to 300lb Sam Tofi who makes the first down and fumbles, but luckiliy Riordan recovers. Looks like that RIordan Rugby play is paying off! Lol!
Crusaders had too many penalties to keep many Mitty drives alive, even receiving an unsportsmanlike to the Riordan sideline. In years past, this would have doomed the Crusaders, but gotta give credit to the Riordan coaching staff and the team's overall conditioning as they seemed to wear down the Monarchs in the 4th quarter. I don't know how Coach Fordon could stand taking second fiddle to Gen Lee last year, as he is really using all his skill players and setting them up for success. Luavasa, Sanders and Verba-Hamilton came in as the known offensive weapons this season - now add jr Josh Boone, Greene, McAfee and Norman to the mix!?! Wow! On the defensive side, soph Lasa Tofi, Norman (87 yd TD pick up of a fumble) and vets Payton Ilalio and Jamarian Caston came up huge as Mitty tried doubling up on Rocco Russell.
Riordan can't celebrate too much as Serra comes to CCSF next week. You can bet the Padres will be prepared as their coaching staff as well as Bellarmine's were on hand to scout the game.
